How to Choose Plant-Based Chicken for Baking

Choose plant-based chicken for baking by matching its format and starting condition to the manufacturer’s oven instructions. See examples for tenders, pieces and dry mixes.

Choose plant-based chicken by its format and the oven directions for that exact product. Frozen breaded tenders, defrosted pieces and a dry mix need different preparation; there is no reliable category-wide baking temperature or time.

What to look for before you buy

  • Match the format to the meal. Breaded tenders suit a meal built around crisp-coated pieces; unbreaded pieces can be added to another dish; a dry mix must be hydrated and shaped before cooking.
  • Find an oven method for the product itself. Check whether the directions start frozen or defrosted, specify a conventional or convection oven, and provide a temperature and time. Do not transfer another product’s timing to your choice.
  • Check the current ingredient and allergen statement. The examples below list different ingredients and allergens, and manufacturers can update formulations or directions. Use the package in hand as the final reference.

Products with published oven directions

Frozen breaded tenders: MorningStar Farms Homestyle chik’n tenders

MorningStar Farms describes these tenders as vegan and lists wheat and soy. Its product page directs cooks to heat them from frozen on a baking sheet at 400°F for 12–14 minutes, turning halfway for extra crispness, then rest them for 3–5 minutes. The page says to heat to at least 165°F. This is a clear option when you want a breaded product with specific oven directions.

Defrosted pieces: TiNDLE Pieces

TiNDLE’s product page says to defrost the pieces overnight in the refrigerator, then bake at 350°F for 4–5 minutes. The listed ingredient information includes soy protein. Those short directions apply to this product and its stated defrosted starting condition; they are not a general timing guide for plant-based chicken.

Dry mix: JADA Plant-Based Chick’n Mix

JADA’s FAQ says to combine one bag of its shelf-stable mix with one cup of water and one tablespoon of oil, shape it as desired, and cook by stovetop, oven, air fryer or grill until golden brown. The mix contains wheat. The FAQ does not give a specific oven temperature or time, so follow the current package directions for those details.

#1 Best Overall
Daring Foods, Frozen, Original Plant Based Chicken Pieces, 8 Ounce
  • No hydrogenated fats or high fructose corn syrup allowed in any food
  • No bleached or bromated flour
  • No synthetic nitrates or nitrites

Do not mistake the oven directions in JADA’s rosemary sweet-potato recipe for directions for the chick’n. That recipe bakes the potatoes at 400°F for 15–20 minutes but pan-fries the formed chick’n fillets for 3–5 minutes per side.

Convection-oven pieces: endori vegan Chicken Natur

endori’s professional product page says to mix the product with a little oil and cook it on a baking tray in a convection oven at 215°C for about 6–7 minutes. Its listed ingredients include wheat gluten, mycoprotein and pea protein. These are convection-oven directions from a professional product source; check the retail package for the instructions applicable to the product you have.

When the available directions point to another cooking method

THIS Isn’t Chicken Pieces

THIS describes its pieces as vegan and soy-protein-based. Its product page recommends pan-frying for 4–6 minutes and does not provide an oven method. If you want to bake this product, check its package or current manufacturer directions rather than adapting the pan-fry time.

  • No hydrogenated fats or high fructose corn syrup allowed in any food
  • No bleached or bromated flour
  • No synthetic nitrates or nitrites

How to use recipes without mixing up the instructions

A recipe may bake one component and cook the plant-based chicken another way. Confirm which food each temperature and time applies to before using a recipe as an oven guide. JADA’s sweet-potato recipe, for example, bakes the potatoes and pan-fries the chick’n fillets.
