What Harness permissions control
DeepSeek describes Harness as a locally-first, extensible coding agent and agent development/runtime environment. Its Web UI guide says the agent can read and edit workspace files, run commands, delegate work, and maintain a plan. Permissions therefore affect what the agent can do in its environment, not just how it responds in conversation. Harness treats capabilities—including models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, storage, loops, scheduling, and UI—as plugins that can be selected or extended through configuration. Choose a level by the task

The Web UI lists Read Only, Workspace Write, and Full access. The permission reference documents two underlying presets: workspace-write pairs the workspace-write sandbox with ask approval, while danger-full-access pairs the danger-full-access sandbox with never approval. The sandbox mode sets the access boundary; the approval policy determines whether a person must approve operations. These mappings depend on implementation and may change. The permission subsystem describes those presets as its default configured table, while the Web UI separately lists Read Only. Do not assume every client build exposes every preset or maps labels identically; verify the installed version and active composition.

Change the default or the current session?
Use General settings when you want to set a default for future sessions. Changing that setting does not switch or rewrite the active session. To change permissions for the session already open, use the composer permission control or the /permission picker, then confirm the current value in the session UI. Web UI permission reference
The client reference says visible Full access and Auto review selections require separate risk acknowledgements. Auto is an experimental, current-session-only option when its integration is loaded.

Audit the tools and plugins as well as the preset
A permission choice is only part of the picture. Review the capabilities actually mounted in the active composition, especially shell or command execution, filesystem access, network-connected tools, external model endpoints, MCP services, and third-party plugins. DeepSeek’s terms warn that Harness can execute generated code and commands, load third-party plugins, and access networks, processes, credentials, and files made available to it. Harness is experimental developer-preview software, and its official safety document says it has not undergone a security audit. It cautions: “Sandboxing, approval prompts, and permission controls can reduce risk, but they do not guarantee isolation or prevent damage.” A restriction cannot protect resources the project is permitted to access. - Run untrusted or high-impact work in a disposable VM, container, or dedicated environment.
- Keep backups of files the environment can reach.
- Withhold sensitive credentials unless you accept the risk of making them available.
- Review the active configuration, plugins, dependencies, and proposed commands.
- Seek human confirmation before significant changes.
Full access does not by itself prove that every other enforcement layer has disappeared. The actual behavior depends on the configured sandbox, approval policy, tools, plugins, and environment. Check those layers in the version you are running rather than treating the UI label as a guarantee.

- Define the task: inspection, project edits, or operations that need broader access.
- Select the narrowest suitable UI option, starting with Read Only for inspection and Workspace Write for project changes.
- Check the underlying sandbox and approval policy, including whether operations wait for human approval.
- Confirm whether you changed the future-session default in General settings or the active session through the composer or
/permission. - Inspect active tools and plugins, then use an isolated environment for untrusted or consequential work.
