Use product documentation to check measurable properties, digital visuals to shortlist appearances, and targeted physical samples or supplier confirmation to verify what neither can establish. Keep a record of the evidence and unknowns before you approve a specification.
Start with the job the material must do
Write down where the material will be used, who will use it, the expected service life, exposure conditions, maintenance expectations, budget, schedule, and the consequences of failure. Those details shape which properties matter and which checks are necessary. Material selection combines functional and structural requirements with sensory judgments such as appearance and feel, as research on architects’ selection describes (architectural selection research).

Set mandatory performance and safety requirements apart from preferences such as color, texture, warmth, or reflectivity. The applicable rules and tests depend on the material, its use, and the project’s jurisdiction; without those details, no single standard or compliance check can be prescribed.
Screen candidates with product-specific evidence
Ask the manufacturer or supplier for current product documentation before judging a candidate from its appearance. Depending on the project, request the product data sheet, installation and maintenance instructions, relevant test information, exact finish reference, availability, and sourcing or health declarations.
#1 Best Overall
- 3-inch by 2-inch finish sample chip
- Front side is sealed with proprietary NativeStone Shield concrete sealer
- Sealed front side is representative of what the actual product (sink, tub, vanity top) will look like
- Back side is unsealed and includes a label designating the finish name, collection, and brand
- Due to their handmade nature, no two products will be exactly alike and may vary in finish, texture, size, and other details
The American Institute of Architects recommends considering durability, health, safety, environmental effects, sourcing, and product transparency as part of material selection. It identifies Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Health Product Declarations (HPDs), and Declare labels as useful documentation to seek (AIA material-selection guidance). A declaration covers a defined scope; it does not, by itself, prove a product is the right choice for every application.
Use digital visuals to compare appearance—not certify it
Digital representations can help you compare candidate colors, textures, and combinations, particularly when each option is shown under the same lighting and camera conditions in the same scene. Prefer product-specific texture or material data over a generic lookalike, and note the source and any assumptions behind each image.

For example, SketchUp’s physically based rendering (PBR) materials can simulate properties such as roughness and metalness. Their textures respond to the direction and quality of virtual environmental light (SketchUp material documentation). This describes how the digital model behaves; it does not verify the real product’s exact color, tactile feel, batch consistency, or performance after installation. A rendering is useful for screening and coordination, not a substitute for evidence about the physical material.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Provides the most accurate and effective way to communicate and specify color choices to clients and manufacturers
- Swatch Cards of the same color can be sent to multiple production sites around the globe and aid in the coordination of multi-component programs
- Consistent, reproducible color
- Optimized color constancy
- Durable colors formulated to maximize color fastness
| Criterion | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Use and performance | Fit for the intended application and evidence for required performance. |
| Safety and health | Applicable compliance evidence and relevant health information. |
| Appearance | Color, texture, scale, sheen, and response to light. |
| Durability and maintenance | Expected service life, care requirements, and suitability for exposure. |
| Sourcing and impacts | Available sourcing, environmental information, and product transparency. |
| Project feasibility | Cost, lead time, availability, fabrication, and installation constraints. |
| Evidence confidence | What is documented, what is only represented visually, and what remains unverified. |
There is no universal weighting for these criteria: the project brief should determine which are decisive. AIA’s guidance and research on architectural selection both support considering technical, environmental, and sensory factors together (AIA material-selection guidance; architectural selection research).
Identify what needs physical verification
Physical samples matter most when a decision depends on qualities that documents or images cannot reliably show. Research on materials libraries reports that hands-on exposure provides material knowledge beyond datasheets, catalogues, and online resources (survey of materials libraries).

- Fabric Heavyweight: 350 gsm; material content 90% polyester 10% linen durable and long-lasting. Fabric back in white color.
- Highly recommended and designed by interior designer Stefana Silber.
- Machine Washable
- Colors may vary from the picture due to variations in your monitor, lighting and batch colors. Before placing an order, you'd better purchase fabric swatches to know about accurate colors and texture.
- Request a sample when tactile feel, sheen, translucency, reflectance, grain, or pattern repeat could change the decision.
- Check whether scale matters: a small swatch may not show a full-scale pattern, edge, or joint clearly.
- Compare alternatives together and, if possible, in the intended lighting and context.
- For a property that affects safety or performance, seek appropriate product documentation, supplier confirmation, or testing; an appearance sample alone does not establish it.
If your team cannot access samples in person, a remote materials-library system may help you browse inventory, share palettes, locate physical samples, and retrieve associated product information. Materials Council describes these capabilities for its library-software workflow, but the value depends on the actual inventory and records available to your project (Materials Council library workflow).
Confirm the exact product before specification
Before approval, record the manufacturer, exact product and finish reference, supporting document versions or dates, approved substitute rules, availability, and lead time. Note who approved the selection and which questions remain open. The AIA advises allowing time for product research, specification, review, and procurement tracking (AIA material-selection guidance).

- Belgian Linen: Made of 100% Belgian Linen, 248 gsm Heavyweight.
- Color: There are a total of 10 colors to choose from.
- Note: Please note that the color may have chromatic aberration due to the difference of monitor and lighting. In order to choose the most suitable color, it is recommended to purchase a sample book first.
Libraries and manufacturer collections can make options easier to browse, but they are tools for organizing choices—not evidence that a particular selection will perform as intended. Vitra’s Colour & Material Library, for example, organizes textiles, leathers, plastics, metals, and woods. Designer Hella Jongerius described it this way: “The Vitra Colour & Material Library encourages creative freedom and fires the imagination – not by making everything possible, but by providing a clear display of options” (Vitra Colour & Material Library).
Because material, application, location, performance brief, and budget vary by project, the right verification plan varies too. Use the project brief to decide which properties must be documented, which appearance questions need a sample, and which uncertainties need supplier confirmation or testing.
