How to Choose LED Bulb Color Temperature and Brightness

Match LED brightness by lumens and light color by Kelvin, then check energy use, fit, dimmer compatibility, and recessed-light requirements.

Choose an LED bulb’s brightness by its lumens and its light color by its Kelvin rating (also called correlated color temperature, or CCT). Watts tell you how much electricity it uses. Start by matching the useful light output you need, then pick a color temperature that suits the room and check that the bulb fits and works with your fixture and dimmer.

Choose brightness by lumens, not watts

Lumens measure the light a bulb gives off; watts measure the electrical power it consumes. For a replacement, compare the new bulb’s lumens with the output of the bulb you are replacing. ENERGY STAR’s guide lists these minimum brightness values for incandescent replacements:

Incandescent bulb being replaced Minimum LED brightness
40 W 450 lumens
60 W 800 lumens
75 W 1,100 lumens
100 W 1,600 lumens
150 W 2,600 lumens

These are replacement equivalences, not room-by-room lighting design targets. If you want roughly the output of a 60-watt incandescent, for example, use 800 lumens as a quick starting point. Then compare the LED’s wattage and energy use; ENERGY STAR recommends choosing the lowest-wattage bulb that supplies the lumens you need. See ENERGY STAR’s brightness guide.

Choose light color by Kelvin

Kelvin (K) describes a bulb’s apparent color, not how bright it is. Lower values look warmer and more yellow; higher values look cooler and bluer. ENERGY STAR puts it simply: “Lower K means warmer, yellowish light, while higher K means cooler, bluer light.” Labels such as “soft white,” “warm white,” “cool white,” and “daylight” are shorthand, so check the package’s Kelvin figure rather than relying on the label alone.

Color temperature Typical appearance and examples
2,700 K Warm; examples include homes, libraries, and restaurants
3,000 K Soft; examples include homes, lobbies, and restaurants
3,500 K Neutral; examples include executive offices and reception areas
4,100 K Cool; examples include offices, classrooms, and showrooms

These are U.S. Department of Energy examples of typical uses, not rules for every room. If you like the light already in a space, matching its Kelvin rating is a sensible starting point. A larger change can be noticeable: DOE gives a shift from 2,700 K to 4,100 K as an example that may leave occupants dissatisfied. See DOE’s guide to purchasing energy-efficient light bulbs.

Check fit, dimming, and installation requirements

Before buying, confirm the bulb’s shape and base fit the fixture. Review the package for lumens, Kelvin, energy use, stated life, and whether the bulb is dimmable. A dimmable label does not guarantee compatibility with every control: ENERGY STAR cautions that some LEDs do not work well with some dimmers, so verify the specific bulb-and-dimmer pairing.

For recessed lights, check the fixture’s requirements and the bulb or downlight’s ratings. If insulation touches a downlight, ENERGY STAR says to use an IC-rated model. A non-IC model generally needs at least 3 inches of clearance from insulation. Confirm the product’s installation instructions rather than assuming that any recessed LED is suitable for any housing. More guidance is available in ENERGY STAR’s recessed-downlight guide.

Know what happens when you dim or tune the light

Some LEDs change color as they dim; others let you select a color temperature. DOE distinguishes “warm-dim” bulbs, which become warmer as they dim, from white-tunable products, which can shift between warm and cool white. The behavior and control options vary by product, so check its packaging or documentation and verify dimmer compatibility before purchase. See DOE’s tunable-lighting overview.

A quick way to compare two bulbs

  1. Match the output: compare lumens, using the incandescent-equivalent guide only as a starting estimate.
  2. Pick the appearance: compare Kelvin ratings; lower is warmer and higher is cooler.
  3. Compare energy use: once the lumen output is sufficient, check which option uses less power.
  4. Confirm the hardware: check base, shape, fixture application, dimmability, and compatibility with the exact dimmer.
  5. For recessed fixtures: check IC suitability, insulation clearance, and the fixture’s installation requirements.
