For a sharp print, 300 PPI is a useful close-view target—not a universal requirement. PPI means image pixels per inch at the final print size; DPI means the printer’s output dots per inch. They describe different parts of the process. To determine whether an image has enough pixels, match its pixel dimensions to the intended print size and check the print provider’s specifications.
What 300 PPI means—and how it differs from printer DPI
An image’s pixel dimensions describe how much image data it contains: for example, 3000 × 2000 pixels. PPI (pixels per inch) describes how densely those pixels are placed across a physical print. DPI (dots per inch) describes the printer’s output dots. A printer can use multiple dots to render image detail, so a printer rated at 300 DPI does not require an image set to exactly 300 PPI. Adobe’s image-resolution guidance and its printer-resolution explanation distinguish these measures.

Three quantities determine the result: pixel dimensions, PPI, and physical size. If you fix any two, the third follows from the arithmetic; changing one while keeping the others fixed requires changing the image data or the print size.

- Required pixel dimensions: print size × target PPI
- Print size: pixel dimensions ÷ PPI
- Effective PPI: pixel dimensions ÷ print size
For an 8 × 10-inch print at 300 PPI, multiply each side by 300: 8 × 300 = 2400 and 10 × 300 = 3000. The nominal image dimensions are therefore 2400 × 3000 pixels. Allow for any crop or bleed, and follow the printer or print provider’s file requirements. Adobe publishes these formulas in its image size and resolution guide.
In reverse, a 3000 × 2000-pixel image placed at 300 PPI measures 10 × 6.67 inches. If you print it larger, the same pixels are spread over more inches and the effective PPI falls; print it smaller and the effective PPI rises.

Is 300 PPI the right target for every print?
No. Adobe describes 300 PPI as an industry-standard target for high-quality prints viewed up close, but says lower resolution can work for large prints viewed from farther away. For inkjet photo prints, Adobe says at least 220 PPI is usually sufficient for high quality. These are practical guidelines, not guarantees: the image, paper, output process and viewing conditions all matter. Check the provider’s specifications, especially for commercial printing, large formats or specialized output. See Adobe’s print-resolution guidance.

If the printer or provider specifies a resolution, use that instruction rather than assuming 300 PPI is mandatory.

Why printer DPI and halftone LPI are not image PPI
Printer DPI counts output dots, not image pixels. Adobe gives 720–2880 DPI as the operating range for most inkjet printers in its guidance, while saying 220 PPI is usually enough for high-quality inkjet photo prints. Those figures refer to different stages and should not be compared as if they were equivalent resolutions. Adobe’s printer-resolution and screen-frequency guide explains the distinction.
In halftone printing, screen frequency is measured in lines per inch (LPI). Adobe’s general guidance is to use image resolution about 1.5 to 2 times the halftone screen frequency. The actual setting depends on the output method, so follow the print provider’s instructions. Printer DPI, image PPI and screen LPI are related in a print workflow, but they are not interchangeable units.

What happens when you change resolution in an image editor?
Changing PPI without resampling
With resampling disabled, changing the resolution setting does not add or remove pixels. It changes the physical size assigned to those pixels. A 1000 × 1000-pixel image remains the same pixel data whether its print resolution is set to 72 PPI or 300 PPI; at 300 PPI, it prints smaller. Adobe demonstrates this behavior in its resolution and print-size explanation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Resampling the image
Resampling changes the pixel dimensions. Upsampling estimates additional pixels from existing image data, which can satisfy a requested pixel count but does not, simply by setting a number, recover original detail. Downsampling removes pixels. Keep the resolution setting and resampling operation distinct when resizing.

Check print size and resolution in Photoshop
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size.
- Review the pixel dimensions and the displayed document size and resolution.
- To change the print size without changing pixel dimensions, turn off Resample, then enter the desired width or height or resolution. The other print-size value adjusts accordingly.
- To change pixel dimensions, turn on Resample, enter the target dimensions, and inspect the resulting image before printing.
- Compare the resulting size and effective resolution with the print provider’s requirements, including any crop or bleed allowance.
Adobe’s current step-by-step instructions are in Image size, resolution, and resampling in Photoshop.
For screen use, pixel dimensions matter more than PPI metadata
For screen display, focus first on pixel dimensions and the display context. Changing only an image’s PPI metadata does not change its pixel data on screen. PPI becomes relevant when those pixels are assigned to a physical print size.
