How to Choose Hardware for Running AI Models Locally

Choose hardware for local AI by starting with the models and tasks you plan to run, then checking memory, runtime compatibility, and performance expectations.

Start with the models and tasks you want to run, then choose hardware that fits their memory needs, your preferred runtime and operating system, and the performance you expect. GPU memory matters, but a capacity figure alone cannot tell you whether a model will run well.

Start with your workload, not a graphics card

List the models you intend to use, the tasks you will run, and whether you need short or long conversations, image input, or other features. Then decide whether you want occasional experimentation, interactive use by one person, development, or sustained service for multiple users. Those goals affect both whether a model fits and how much performance you need.

NVIDIA’s local AI hardware guidance recommends choosing based on “operating system, available GPU or unified memory, model size, and workflow.” That is a useful order of operations: identify the software and model first, then check what the machine can support.

Check memory against the model and context

Model size is only part of the memory requirement. The model format and quantization affect how much memory its weights use, while the amount of context the runtime must handle also matters. Check the requirements for the specific model, format, runtime, and context you plan to use rather than relying on a single capacity rule.

Quantization stores model weights at lower precision to reduce memory use. The llama.cpp project lists quantization options from 1.5-bit through 8-bit. Lower precision can help a model fit, but it is not automatically the best choice: quality and compatibility can vary by model and runtime.

For a discrete-GPU PC, NVIDIA lists GeForce RTX systems with 6–32 GB of VRAM and RTX PRO systems with 16–96 GB. These are NVIDIA’s product-tier ranges, not tested minimums or guarantees for any particular model. A GPU with 16 GB of VRAM is one category to consider, not a universal recommendation; verify the target model’s requirements and the card’s compatibility with your system before buying.

Apple Silicon uses unified memory rather than a separate pool of GPU VRAM. The memory figures are not directly interchangeable: how much a workload can use depends on the system and the runtime. In an Ollama announcement dated March 30, 2026, the company described MLX-powered Apple Silicon support as a preview and said its named Qwen3.5 example required a Mac with more than 32 GB of unified memory. That requirement applies to the specific example, not to all models or Macs.

Confirm that the runtime supports your hardware

A machine can have enough memory on paper and still be a poor fit if the application does not support its operating system, GPU architecture, or model format. Check the documentation for the exact runtime you intend to use and confirm support before choosing a platform.

The llama.cpp project lists these hardware backends:

  • NVIDIA: CUDA
  • AMD: HIP
  • Apple Silicon: Metal
  • Intel GPUs: SYCL
  • GPUs across supported platforms: Vulkan

These are options listed by the project, not a guarantee that every GPU, operating-system version, or model format will work with every application. The llama.cpp README describes the project’s goal as enabling inference “with minimal setup and state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of hardware”; that is the project’s stated aim, not an independent benchmark result.

Understand what hybrid CPU and GPU inference changes

llama.cpp supports hybrid inference that uses both CPU and GPU. This can allow a model larger than the GPU’s VRAM capacity to load by placing part of the workload outside GPU memory. It does not establish a particular speed: whether the result is responsive enough depends on the model, machine, runtime, and task.

Compare hardware by fit and practical constraints

Option Memory to assess What to verify
Discrete-GPU PC GPU VRAM, plus system memory available to the workload Target model and context fit; runtime support for the GPU and OS; card compatibility with the system
Apple Silicon system Unified memory shared by the system and supported workloads Target model and runtime support; do not treat unified-memory capacity as directly equivalent to GPU VRAM
Compact or prebuilt local AI system The system’s GPU or unified-memory capacity, as applicable Model fit, runtime support, performance for the intended workload, and practical purchase constraints

For any option, check price, availability, power requirements, size, noise, and upgradeability against your own needs. These factors can change with the exact system and market; the available vendor guidance does not establish a current price/performance ranking.

Use a buying checklist before you commit

  1. Name the model and task. Include the features you need, such as image input, and the context length you expect to use.
  2. Choose a supported runtime. Confirm that it supports your operating system, processor or GPU, and model format.
  3. Check memory for that combination. Account for the model format, quantization, context, and whether the system uses discrete VRAM or unified memory.
  4. Set a performance target. Decide whether a model merely needs to load or must respond interactively, support development work, or serve multiple users.
  5. Verify the whole system. Check compatibility, power, physical fit, noise, size, upgradeability, availability, and price for the machine you plan to buy.
