Norton Cloud Backup lets eligible Windows users choose files and folders for a backup set, save that set to Norton’s cloud storage, and restore all or selected files later. It is not available on every Norton plan, so first confirm that your subscription includes it in your Norton account. Norton lists support for Windows 11 and 10, Windows 8 and 8.1, and Windows 7 SP1 or later. Check Norton’s current system requirements and feature availability.
Before you start: check eligibility and storage
Cloud Backup is a Windows-only feature and is not part of every Norton plan. If you do not see it in the Norton app, check your plan and device eligibility in your Norton account before trying to troubleshoot the interface. Norton’s requirements page lists Windows 11/10, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 7 SP1 or later for Cloud Backup.

In the app’s Cloud Backup window, check how much cloud storage is available to your account. Norton does not state one storage capacity that applies to every plan, so use the amount shown in your account rather than relying on a general figure. An internet connection is needed for cloud backup. An external or USB drive is not required unless you are also making a separate local backup.
Create your first backup set
- Open the Norton device security product on your Windows computer.
- Select Security, then open the Cloud Backup tile.
- If asked, sign in with the Norton account associated with the subscription.
- Open the Cloud Backup tab and start creating a backup set using the create or image control shown in your app.
- Add the files and folders you want included, review the selection, and choose Create Backup.
- Let the initial backup finish. Norton notes that the first run can take longer while the product examines and copies files.
The precise icon and wording can vary between app versions. In the current guidance, Norton refers to Manage or Manage Files controls. Older versions, including 22.x and earlier, may show Manage Backup Sets; do not expect that older label in every installation. See Norton’s Cloud Backup setup guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose what Cloud Backup includes
A backup set contains the files and folders you select; creating a set does not automatically back up every file on the computer. Use Manage or Manage Files beside a set to change its contents and review settings.
- Add or remove content: Choose the folders and files you actually need to protect, then review the list before saving changes.
- Keep current versions in sync: Norton describes an option to periodically sync the latest versions. Check the setting in your set rather than assuming a universal schedule.
- Limit file types: You can configure a set to include common file types, if that suits your needs.
- Check exclusions: Review excluded files so you know what will not be copied.
- Special categories: Sensitive files, notes, and contacts are excluded by default unless you enable their detection in the relevant settings.
If a backup will not complete, confirm that the computer is online and that sufficient storage is available. A local backup has a separate dependency: its destination drive must be connected and turned on.

Cloud Backup or a local backup?
Norton’s interface supports two destination paths. Choose based on where you want the copy stored and how you plan to access it; Norton’s support guidance does not establish a general speed, security, or reliability advantage for either path.

| Option | Destination | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Backup | Norton cloud storage | Use this when you want a cloud copy accessible through Norton’s account tools. A USB or external drive is not needed for this destination. |
| Local backup | A local drive you select | Use this when you want a separate copy on local storage. The destination device must be connected and turned on for the backup. |
Restore a backup set to your computer
- In Norton, select Security, then open Cloud Backup.
- Choose the source location, either Cloud Backup or Local backups.
- Select the backup set, then choose Restore.
- Choose the files and folders to restore.
- Restore them to their original location or select a different destination folder, then start the restore.
Restore time depends on the number and size of the files. If you restore onto a new device, Norton says the original folder structure may not be reproduced exactly; check the destination and organize the recovered files if necessary. Follow Norton’s restore instructions.
