Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Compare AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud against the same requirements, estimate total cost for your expected use, and verify service, regional, support, and contract terms directly. For a business new to cloud, one strategic provider is a sensible starting point; add others only when a specific need justifies the added complexity.
What should you decide before comparing providers?
Start by documenting what the business needs cloud services to do. A provider comparison is only useful when each candidate is assessed against the same workloads and constraints.

Inventory workloads and dependencies
List the applications and data you may move, build, or retain on-premises. Record their dependencies, performance and availability needs, expected growth, locations, and connections to identity, productivity, development, data, and business systems. Include any hybrid requirements and existing licenses or tools that may affect the design.
Separate requirements from preferences
Mark legal, regulatory, security, performance, and continuity requirements as mandatory. Distinguish them from preferences such as a familiar interface or a particular development tool. This prevents a convenient feature from outweighing a condition the architecture must meet.

Check whether the organization can run the services
Assess the technical staff, cloud skills, governance processes, and operational coverage available to manage the environment. Include training or outside assistance in the plan if the team lacks experience with the services under consideration.
How do you compare cloud providers fairly?
AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud offer broad service portfolios, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner. Compare proposed architectures and terms against your requirements rather than assuming that a provider is best for every business or workload.
Use a consistent set of questions for each shortlisted provider:

| Total cost | What will expected and peak use cost, including supporting and indirect expenses? | Usage assumptions, calculator estimates, support terms, and contract pricing |
| Migration and portability | How much redesign is required, and what would it take to move the workload or its data later? | Migration plan, dependencies, data-transfer needs, and realistic exit options |
| Support and skills | Can the team operate the services, and what response and escalation arrangements are available? | Support model, documentation, training, and escalation terms |
| Reliability and continuity | Will the architecture and service terms meet the business’s availability and continuity needs? | Applicable service-level terms and a design for the required continuity |
Treat service maps as a starting point
Google Cloud’s service comparison maps generally available Google Cloud services to comparable AWS and Azure offerings. Google lists the table as last updated December 3, 2024. A mapped service is a discovery aid, not proof that features, limits, pricing, or regional availability match. Verify the current details for the exact services you plan to use.
How should you compare security and compliance?
Cloud security is shared between provider and customer. The boundary varies by service and architecture, so do not treat a provider’s general certifications as proof that every workload or customer configuration is compliant.
For each proposed service, establish who is responsible for:

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
- Identity, access, and configuration
- Data protection, retention, and backup
- Monitoring and incident response
- Evidence needed to meet the organization’s regulatory or contractual duties
Confirm that the relevant service and region have the assurance evidence your organization needs. For regulated workloads, Google Cloud’s migration guidance notes that attestations may be required from both the customer and provider. Make the control owners and evidence requirements explicit before migration or procurement.
How do you estimate the real cost?
Compare total cost for a defined workload and expected usage—not an advertised compute price in isolation. Provider pricing changes and depends on the workload; the available evidence does not identify a current price winner.
Build a like-for-like estimate
Use each provider’s pricing tools with the same assumptions for expected and peak usage, growth, storage, and data transfer. Include the services needed to operate the architecture, not only its primary compute resources.

Have finance, procurement, IT, security, business leadership, and legal review the assumptions and proposed terms. AWS procurement guidance recommends involving these groups early. Validate calculator estimates against current provider pricing and contract language before committing; a calculated estimate is not a substitute for confirming the terms that will apply to your usage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a migration plan cover?
Migration planning affects cost, downtime, and risk. Microsoft Azure’s cost-estimation guidance says the migration approach should align with business continuity, compliance, and service-level expectations. Google Cloud’s migration guidance warns that a poorly planned foundation can lead to delays, confusion, downtime, and risk to migration success.
- Discover the workload. Confirm its dependencies, data, owners, and operational requirements.
- Design the foundation. Define the environment, governance, security responsibilities, and operating processes needed before moving workloads.
- Plan the move. Account for data transfer, testing, downtime, continuity, and any redesign required by the target services.
- Set a recovery path. Decide how to roll back or otherwise respond if migration or validation fails.
- Review portability and exit. Estimate the effort and cost of moving data or workloads later, especially where proprietary services are valuable but could make a future move harder.
Proprietary services can speed delivery or meet a particular need, but may increase migration effort or lock-in. Choose them deliberately against business value and realistic exit costs rather than treating portability as an all-or-nothing rule.

Should a growing business choose one cloud provider or several?
For an organization new to cloud, beginning with one strategic provider is a reasonable default. AWS Prescriptive Guidance recommends that newcomers start with a single provider to learn and achieve cloud benefits before deciding whether multicloud is right for the business.
| Approach | When it may fit | Trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| One strategic provider | The organization is building cloud capability and has no defined requirement that calls for more than one provider. | Check whether its services, regions, support, and terms meet the workload requirements. |
| Multiple providers | A defined regulatory, resilience, acquisition, customer, or workload need outweighs the additional complexity. | Plan for added integration, skills, governance, billing, and service-level agreement complexity. |
Do not adopt multicloud simply because it sounds more resilient or flexible. Identify the specific business requirement first, then determine whether the benefits justify operating and contracting across providers.
How do you make the final selection?
Turn the requirements into a documented decision rather than relying on a broad vendor ranking.
Quick Recap
- Shortlist providers that meet mandatory requirements. Exclude proposals that cannot support a required workload, control, region, or integration.
- Compare complete architectures. Ask each provider to confirm the exact services, regional coverage, support, security evidence, data-location commitments, service-level terms, and contract language relevant to the proposal.
- Evaluate cost and operating readiness together. Compare like-for-like estimates alongside migration effort, support, staffing, and the work required to run the environment.
- Record trade-offs and assumptions. Note why the selected option fits, what it does not solve, and which terms or estimates need confirmation before commitment.
- Set a review point. Revisit the decision if workloads, obligations, growth, or operating capability change materially.
