The practical decision the evidence does support is whether to use a managed commerce service with hosting included or build a WooCommerce store and select hosting separately. That choice determines how much infrastructure work you take on, how much control you retain, and which costs you need to track.
What ecommerce hosting does
Ecommerce hosting provides the infrastructure that serves your store’s pages to shoppers. It matters to page loading, payment-data security, cart operation and support, but hosting alone does not establish that a store’s checkout, catalog or integrations meet your needs. Shopify’s guide describes those considerations from the perspective of a commerce platform vendor, not an independent test. Shopify’s ecommerce hosting comparison

Choose between bundled hosting and a separate host
Managed commerce service
With a managed commerce platform such as Shopify, hosting is built into the service; you do not arrange a separate web-hosting account. This reduces infrastructure decisions, though you should still verify that the platform’s commerce features, support and costs fit your store. Shopify’s small-business hosting guide describes this bundled approach. Shopify’s small-business hosting guide
WooCommerce with hosting you select
WooCommerce is a free, open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress. Store owners choose a hosting provider and assemble the operating setup around it. That offers more choice over the hosting environment, but also means the merchant must decide how server maintenance, security updates and backups will be handled. WooCommerce’s platform and pricing information explains its model. WooCommerce · WooCommerce pricing
Compare responsibilities before features
Before choosing a provider, establish who will operate the infrastructure. Shopify’s guide distinguishes managed WordPress hosting, where the host takes on tasks such as maintenance, security patches and backups, from unmanaged hosting, where the site owner is responsible for updates and security. Confirm the exact responsibilities in the plan terms rather than assuming every plan labeled “managed” includes the same work. Shopify’s hosting guide
- Maintenance: Find out who applies server and software updates.
- Security and backups: Check what the provider includes, what remains your responsibility and how support is reached. Published security claims are provider statements, not independent verification.
- Store fit: Check cart and payment support, catalog requirements, integrations and any need for in-person selling.
- Control: Decide whether choosing and configuring a separate hosting stack is worth the added operating work for your business.
Calculate the full recurring cost
Compare the ongoing platform or hosting charge, the renewal price after an introductory offer, and the cost of extensions or apps your store actually needs. A low first-term price alone does not show what the store will cost to operate.

WooCommerce estimates hosting for most stores at $25–$350 per month, scaling with traffic and performance needs, and extensions at $29–$299 per year. These are WooCommerce’s own estimates published on its pricing page, not an independent survey of market prices. WooCommerce pricing
For context, a Shopify comparison article updated December 19, 2025, listed example prices of $29 per month for Shopify, IONOS introductory pricing of $1 per month renewing at $14 per month, and Bluehost pricing of $14.99 per month renewing at $21.99 per month. Those are figures reported by that article, not guarantees of current pricing; verify each provider’s official plans, geography, term and renewal price before relying on them. Why this is not a verified list of 26 hosts
The available comparison material does not substantiate a current, provider-by-provider list of 26 suitable ecommerce hosts. Shopify’s ecommerce comparison covers nine providers, while its small-business hosting article discusses eleven providers for a broader audience. Those pages can help frame questions, but they do not establish a complete 26-host ranking or independently tested “best” choice. Their rankings, examples and claims should be read as vendor-published editorial material.

Without that verification, naming 26 options as store-ready would imply evidence that is not established.
