Choose the ear tip that seals comfortably and stays in place—not simply the one with the largest or smallest label. Fit each ear separately, check comfort and stability while moving gently, and use your earbuds’ fit test if the manufacturer provides one. A poor seal or incorrect wearing position can affect sound and noise cancellation, but ordinary earbud tips are not certified hearing protection.
What a good ear-tip fit should feel like
A correctly fitted tip should feel comfortably snug and stay secure without pain or excessive pressure. Bose describes the intended position for its earbuds as resting gently at the ear-canal opening to create a comfortable seal. If a tip feels painful or presses too hard, try a smaller size or adjust its position. If the earbud feels loose, slips, or seems to sit too deeply, try another size and reseat it.

A good seal matters for more than comfort: Sony warns that a mismatched tip or incorrect wearing position can affect sound quality and noise-canceling performance. Fit is individual, though, and Sony and Bose both note that the best size can differ between ears. Choose left and right tips independently rather than assuming they must match.
How to find your size
- Start with the included tips and your model’s instructions. Manufacturers do not use one universal sizing sequence: Sony advises trying sizes from larger to smaller for the model covered by its guide, while beyerdynamic’s April 22, 2025 help article says to start with the smallest tip and increase if it does not seal or feels insecure. Follow the directions for your earbuds, then let comfort and a stable seal determine the fit.
- Fit one ear at a time. Attach the tip securely, insert the earbud as directed, and assess whether it feels snug without pinching or building pressure. Repeat independently on the other side; different sizes may work better in each ear.
- Check the seal and retention. Gently move your head. The earbud should stay in place, and the fit should remain comfortable. If it slips, feels loose, or does not seem to seal, try another size or reposition it. If pressure or pain develops, do not keep using that fit.
- Use a fit test if your earbuds offer one. Supported models from Apple and Bose provide manufacturer-specific ways to check fit or seal. Treat a passing result as an additional check—not a substitute for comfort and secure retention, or a guarantee that the fit will suit every listening condition.

Memory foam

Replacement tips
Before buying, check the earbud maker’s and tip maker’s compatibility information for your exact model. Similar-looking nozzles or matching size labels do not establish compatibility. Apple’s support guidance distinguishes tip generations, and Comply lists compatible products. After installation, make sure each tip is firmly and fully seated on the earbud before wearing it.

When the supplied tips do not work
If none of the included sizes gives you a comfortable, stable fit, look for replacements explicitly listed for your exact earbud model. Confirm the attachment or nozzle compatibility and check that the tip sits securely.
