How to find the right ear tip size
- Start with the tips supplied with your earbuds. Fit one size, seat the earbud comfortably, and compare it with the next size up or down.
- Test each ear separately. Your ears may need different sizes; it is fine to use one size on the left and another on the right.
- Check comfort and stability. The tip should seal without painful pressure or a compressed feeling. Walk, talk, or move your head lightly to see whether the earbud shifts.
- Use a manufacturer fit test when available. Treat the result as an additional check alongside comfort and stability.
The goal is a comfortable seal, not the tightest possible fit. Tips that are too small may be unstable; tips that are too large can feel uncomfortable and may also fit poorly.

What a good seal should feel like—and why it matters
A well-fitting tip stays put during ordinary movement and rests comfortably at the ear canal opening without excessive pressure. Bose describes its intended fit this way: “The eartip gently rests at the opening of your ear canal to create a comfortable seal.” Bose Support’s QuietComfort Earbuds II fit guidance suggests trying another size if comfort, security, noise cancellation, or sound quality is not as expected.
A seal helps earbuds deliver their intended performance. Apple says a good seal can improve noise cancellation and give music richer bass; Belkin also links correct sizing with sound quality and reduced outside noise. These are not guarantees of a particular change for every listener: fit and perception vary.

Use your earbuds’ fit test, if they have one
An app-based test can help identify whether the tip is sealing adequately, but it does not replace checking for comfort and stability. Follow the instructions for your exact model:
- AirPods Pro: Apple supports an Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and an Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3. Apple’s guidance is that “Your ear tips should make a good seal with your ear canal.” See Apple’s guide to choosing AirPods Pro ear tips.
- Other earbuds: Check the manufacturer’s app or support instructions to see whether your model has a fit or seal test. If it does, use it after seating the earbuds comfortably.
When to try foam instead of silicone
Silicone is common in supplied tips, but it does not work for everyone. If several silicone sizes feel slippery, uncomfortable, or unstable, compatible memory-foam tips may be worth trying. Choose by comfort, stability, and seal rather than assuming a material will improve sound for everyone. Comply recommends checking comfort and seal rather than choosing a tip simply because it feels tight; its Tip Finder can help check compatibility.

Check compatibility before buying replacement tips
Ear tips are not universally interchangeable. Apple says its AirPods Pro tips are designed for particular models, and tip designs differ across generations. For third-party replacements, check both the exact earbud model and the tip maker’s compatibility information before ordering. A similar-looking tip is not proof that it will attach securely or seal correctly.

- Confirm the full earbud model and generation.
- Verify that the replacement is listed as compatible with that exact model.
- After fitting a replacement, check comfort and stability again and repeat the manufacturer’s fit test if available.
