Choose settings based on the experience you want and the specific mechanics that are getting in your way—not on a single Easy, Normal, or Hard label. If a game lets you adjust combat, puzzles, navigation, controls, sensory cues, and resource pressure separately, tune those parts independently. Before starting, check which choices can be changed later and whether changing one restarts a chapter or affects game content.
Start with the experience you want
Decide what you want this playthrough to emphasize: story and atmosphere, exploration, resource-management tension, combat challenge, or puzzle-solving. Then identify which mechanic is creating friction. Difficulty labels often bundle several variables together, even though a player may want easier combat but challenging puzzles, or the reverse. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends that games offer adjustable individual mechanics so one kind of challenge does not block access to the rest of the game. It is design guidance, not a promise that any particular title includes those controls.

Choose settings by the kind of challenge
Use these as categories to inspect in the game’s own menus; they are not features every survival horror game provides.
Recommended Free Tools
- Combat: Look for adjustments to enemy or player damage, enemy perception or accuracy, aim or dodge assistance, timing windows, and aggression. Lowering combat pressure can preserve puzzle difficulty if the game separates the settings.
- Puzzles and progression: Check for a separate puzzle difficulty, hints, or a puzzle-skip option. Confirm whether a puzzle setting changes the content or can be changed after starting.
- Navigation and exploration: Consider navigation guidance, traversal assistance, ledge protection, and cues that identify items, enemies, interactable objects, or paths.
- Input demands: Button remapping, hold-versus-toggle options, repeated-press settings, camera assistance, aim assistance, and automatic weapon switching can reduce input strain without necessarily reducing other challenges.
- Sensory presentation: Check subtitle size, color, background, speaker labels or direction, text-to-speech, high-contrast display, and visual warnings for information otherwise conveyed through sound.
- Pressure systems: If available, review resource scarcity, save rules, checkpoint frequency, timers, oxygen, stamina, and the consequences of failure. These systems can create tension independently of combat difficulty.
Use accessibility options to change access, not just difficulty
Accessibility settings can change how information is presented or how an input works while leaving other forms of challenge intact. A navigation cue, clearer subtitle, remapped button, or hold-to-toggle option may address a specific barrier without making combat or puzzles easier. Choose the adjustment that matches the problem rather than assuming that every accessibility option is a broad difficulty reduction.
#1 Best Overall
The Last of Us Part II illustrates the range a single game can offer: its official accessibility page lists options such as navigation assistance, simplified traversal, ledge guard, infinite breath, puzzle skip, enhanced listen mode, text-to-speech, audio and vibration cues, awareness indicators, subtitle customization, combat assists, and input remapping. PlayStation also notes that some puzzle progression may not be fully accessible to blind or low-vision players and recommends using the skip option in that circumstance. These are examples from that title, not standard features across the genre. See also the PlayStation Blog feature article.
Check what a preset actually changes
A difficulty name does not tell you which mechanics it affects. For example, EA’s official Dead Space settings page for PS5 describes Story, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Impossible modes, with differences involving player and enemy damage, oxygen duration, automatic healing, and enemy grappling. The same page lists quick-time-event input, sprint and aim toggles, automatic weapon swapping, and aim assistance. This is a platform-specific example; options may differ across editions and platforms. Consult the EA PS5 gameplay settings page for that version.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Verify reversibility before you commit
Check the game’s current official help information or settings menu before choosing any option that might lock in a playthrough. Combat and puzzle difficulty may follow different rules, and lowering a setting can sometimes reload or restart a section.

A historical example shows why restart behavior matters: the Xbox 360 manual for The Evil Within says that only Casual and Survival are available at first, that clearing the game unlocks further difficulty settings, and that difficulty cannot be raised during play but can be lowered in Options. It also says lowering difficulty during gameplay restarts the chapter. The manual describes Casual as recommended for first-time survival-horror players, but that guidance is specific to this release and should not be generalized to current games. See the The Evil Within Xbox 360 manual.

- Choose your priority. Decide whether this run is mainly about atmosphere and story, exploration, resource tension, combat, or puzzles.
- Identify the friction point. Separate trouble with combat from difficulty reading cues, operating controls, navigating, solving puzzles, or managing scarce resources.
- Inspect individual options. Use the game’s settings and official guidance to find the narrowest adjustment that addresses that issue.
- Check the consequences. Confirm whether the setting is reversible, changes content, or reloads a chapter or run before committing.
- Revisit only if the game allows it. If a setting can be changed safely, adjust the specific source of friction rather than changing every difficulty option at once.
Settings and labels can vary by game version, platform, patch, and region. Use the target title’s current menus and official documentation for exact availability and effects.
Quick Recap

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
