Choose walking shoes that feel comfortable from the first try-on, give your toes room, hold your heel securely, and suit the surfaces and distance you walk. Try both shoes with your usual socks, adjust the fastening, and walk around before buying. Fit matters more than the size printed on the shoe.
Start with fit, not the size label
Shoe sizes vary between manufacturers, and your feet may differ from each other. Try on both shoes and use the larger foot as your guide. When standing, your toes should have room to move without being pinched, while the rest of your foot should feel secure rather than sliding around. Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust offers footwear guidance, and AAOS OrthoInfo explains why tight shoes can cause problems in its guidance on shoes, shoe inserts and orthotics.

Check toe-box width and shoe depth
Length is only part of fit. A rounded or square toe box can help avoid crowding when it gives your toes more space than a pointed shape. Check depth as well as width: toes that need extra room and orthoses both may require a deeper shoe. Guidance from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and AAOS OrthoInfo highlights the importance of avoiding shoes that press on the foot.
Secure your foot without squeezing it
Laces or another adjustable fastening let you secure the midfoot to reduce movement and rubbing without tightening the shoe until it creates pressure. Walk around and notice whether the heel stays comfortably in place. If it slips, or the fastening leaves pressure points, try a different fit or shape rather than compensating by overtightening.

Match cushioning and construction to your route
For pavement and other hard surfaces
For regular walks on hard ground, consider a thicker sole and soft padding to help absorb shock. NHS foot-pain guidance discusses these features, while its athletic footwear guidance also describes a stable midsole, heel padding and a forefoot rocker as features to consider. These are selection factors, not a promise that a particular shoe will prevent pain.
For wet conditions
Check the shoe’s material and stated intended use if you expect wet weather. Do not assume a breathable mesh upper is waterproof.

For longer walks or challenging routes
Everyday walks do not automatically require specialist shoes. The NHS says comfortable, supportive shoes that do not cause blisters are suitable for walking for health: “Any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support and do not cause blisters will do.” Specialist walking shoes may be worth considering for longer walks or more challenging routes. See the NHS page Walking for health.

- If your feet tend to swell, try shoes later in the day. Wear the socks you expect to use on your walks.
- Try both shoes and fit the larger foot. Stand up and check that your toes are not pinched and the forefoot has enough room.
- Walk around. Check that the heel stays comfortably in place and the shoe does not rub or slide.
- Adjust the laces or fastening to hold the foot securely without creating pressure.
- If you use orthoses, put them in the shoes for the try-on. Check that there is enough depth and, if needed, a removable liner.
- For regular pavement walks, consider a cushioned sole. For wet conditions, check the material and intended use.
- Do not buy a pair that feels wrong expecting it to become comfortable after a break-in period.
AAOS OrthoInfo says there is no need to rely on a break-in period for a shoe that does not fit; Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust similarly advises that a correctly fitting shoe should feel comfortable from the start.

Account for orthoses and individual needs
If you use prescribed orthoses or other inserts, try them inside the shoe rather than assuming they will fit. The shoe needs enough depth, and a removable liner may help make room. If you have persistent pain, an unusual foot shape, difficulty finding a comfortable fit, or prescribed orthoses, ask a podiatrist or clinician for individual advice.

Athletic shoes can suit many people, but they are not right for everyone. NHS foot-service guidance identifies very poor balance and feet that turn inward and cause trips as exceptions where tailored advice may be needed. If either applies, seek individual guidance rather than choosing by brand, price or a single gait category.
