Choose outdoor lighting for the task, not for the biggest lumen number: use a fully shielded fixture, direct its beam only where needed, start with the lowest output that works, and control when it turns on. More light can make visibility worse when people see the source directly or it creates a bright spot against a dark setting.
Why brighter outdoor lighting can cause glare
Outdoors, a bright source stands out against a dark environment. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that glare depends on factors including a luminaire’s intensity, number, size, mounting height, and angle; small LED emitting areas may also contribute to perceived glare. Brightness alone does not tell you how much useful light reaches a path, work area, or entryway. Direction, optics, installation, and surrounding surfaces matter. A shielded fixture can still create discomfort if it lights a reflective wall or shines into a person’s line of sight. The Illuminating Engineering Society’s PS-06-24 position statement treats outdoor glare as contextual, taking optical control and contrast into account.

These are recommendations, not universal code limits or a guarantee that a particular installation will be comfortable. The result depends on the task, fixture optics, mounting and aiming, surfaces, and applicable local requirements. The joint DarkSky International and IES Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting advise that light should be useful, targeted, no brighter than necessary, controlled, and warm-colored.
Look for shielding and suitable light distribution
Prefer a fully shielded fixture that hides the lamp or LED from likely viewing angles and directs light downward. An exposed high-output source can be uncomfortable even if its lumen rating seems appropriate. Check the fixture’s distribution and whether it can illuminate the intended surface without sending light upward, toward a neighbor, or into the approach where people will see it.

Then consider the installation as a whole: fixture count and size, mounting height and angle, aiming, nearby windows, reflective surfaces, and the routes people use to walk or drive. If the lit surface itself becomes a bright glare spot, change the aim or placement, reduce output, or use a different optical distribution.
Choose a warm color temperature where practical
DarkSky’s home assessment recommends 2700K or lower; its broader home guidance recommends 3000K or lower. For a residential choice, 2700K or lower follows the more specific assessment. Color temperature is not a substitute for shielding or careful aiming: a warm source can still be too bright or point in the wrong direction.

Use controls to limit operating time
A timer, motion sensor, or dimmer can keep outdoor lights from running at full output when nobody needs them. Set the control so light is available for the task and otherwise off or reduced. Controls limit duration or level; they do not correct a fixture that exposes the source or is aimed into someone’s view.
A practical selection and setup sequence
- Define the task. Identify the exact area that needs illumination, and consider whether lighting is needed at all.
- Select shielding and distribution. Look for a fully shielded fixture designed to direct light onto that area, rather than an exposed high-output lamp.
- Start low. Choose the lowest output that meets the task. Treat DarkSky’s home figures as residential guidance, not a substitute for local rules or a site-specific design.
- Aim and inspect. Direct the beam onto the task area. Check the light from the approaches where people walk or drive, and adjust it if the source is directly visible or bright spill reaches unintended areas.
- Set the color. Choose 2700K or lower when practical, while accounting for local requirements and the use case.
- Add a control. Use a timer, motion sensor, or dimmer to operate the light only as needed.
- Check requirements and complexity. Review local lighting rules. For roads, parking facilities, or complex properties, consult a qualified lighting professional rather than applying residential lumen examples.
Verify any DarkSky Approved claim
If a product is advertised as DarkSky Approved, verify the exact fixture in DarkSky’s live product directory. Do not assume a similar model is approved or rely on retailer wording alone. DarkSky’s Luminaire Guidelines, version 3.1, updated October 2025, describe the program’s criteria.
