Choose the Xbox Game Pass tier by the device you use and the benefits you will actually use—not by the biggest game-count figure. Essential is the basic console option; Premium adds a larger catalog and cloud gaming; Ultimate is for day-one releases and bundled services; PC Game Pass is built around PC play, day-one titles and EA Play. Check the current catalog and terms for your region before subscribing, since availability changes by plan, platform, region and time.
Compare the four Game Pass tiers
Microsoft’s current US lineup has four plans. Its official pages list the following library sizes and benefits; the figures are Microsoft’s approximate marketing counts, not independent counts or a promise that any particular game is included.

Choose based on where you play
Mostly on an Xbox console
Start by deciding whether you need a library and online multiplayer, or want a broader catalog and cloud play as well. Essential is the basic console-oriented choice. Premium is the step up if you want its larger catalog and can wait for eligible new Xbox-published games, which Microsoft says arrive within 12 months of launch.

Mostly on a Windows PC
PC Game Pass is the direct fit if you want a PC catalog, day-one titles and EA Play. Do not select it expecting cloud gaming: Microsoft’s FAQ says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass.
Across devices
Premium or Ultimate may suit players who want to use cloud gaming alongside a console or other supported device. Confirm that your specific device and region are supported before choosing on that basis.

Decide how much launch-day access matters
Release timing is one of the clearest differences between the plans. Microsoft lists day-one titles for Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium’s stated promise is that new Xbox-published games are added within 12 months of launch, not necessarily at launch. Essential does not include new releases on day one.

If you mainly play older or already-available games, paying for day-one access may not add much value. If you want eligible releases as they launch, compare Ultimate and PC Game Pass according to your platform; the availability of individual titles still depends on the catalog and plan.

Check the games you actually want
A larger library count does not guarantee that a specific game is included. Catalogs change, and availability can differ by region, plan and platform. Before subscribing, look up the titles you expect to play in Microsoft’s current plan and catalog information. Treat the listed 50+, 200+, 500+ and 300+ counts as broad indicators of catalog size, not as a substitute for checking your games.
Count bundled services only if you will use them
- EA Play: listed with Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
- Ubisoft+ Classics: listed with Ultimate.
- Fortnite Crew: listed with Ultimate.
These inclusions can make a plan more useful if you would otherwise use or pay for the services. If not, do not treat the bundle names as value by themselves. Check Microsoft’s current plan details for local availability and terms.

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
Understand cloud gaming before relying on it
Microsoft’s comparison lists cloud gaming for Essential, Premium and Ultimate, but its pages do not present cloud limits in a fully consistent way. The comparison describes Premium and Ultimate as having unlimited cloud gaming, while the general FAQ says monthly limits vary by plan. It also describes Ultimate as offering the best streaming quality—up to 1440p on supported titles and devices—shorter waits and streaming for select owned games. Premium is described as having shorter wait times. Verify the current terms for your plan rather than assuming a universal monthly limit or feature set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCloud play also depends on supported devices and regions. Microsoft notes that supported devices are sold separately, and games outside the Game Pass library may need to be purchased separately. Consult the FAQ’s cloud gaming and availability details before relying on a device or feature.

Check multiplayer and subscription terms
If your only reason to subscribe is online multiplayer, note that Microsoft says multiplayer access for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. Decide whether the other benefits of a plan justify it for your use.
Prices and promotions are market-specific and can change. Microsoft says the subscription continues automatically, so check the price, renewal date and cancellation terms displayed at local checkout before you confirm.
