Neither type is automatically better-sounding. The right choice depends on the specific model, fit, listening mode, source device and, for Bluetooth, codec support.
Wired earbuds vs. wireless headphones at a glance
| Factor | Wired earbuds | Wireless headphones | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | A cable can tangle or catch on clothing and equipment. | No cable connects the headphones to the source device. | Think about commuting, exercise and where you listen. |
| Power | Passive wired earbuds do not need charging. | Wireless playback requires battery power. | Hybrid models may also need power for wired playback or features; check the manual. |
| Timing | Passive analog wiring is a dependable choice when low latency matters. | Bluetooth delay depends on the codec and setup. | For gaming, recording or monitoring, check the exact model and connection type. |
| Sound | A direct wired connection avoids Bluetooth codec negotiation. | Modern Bluetooth can sound very good, but codec support and processing matter. | Compare the actual models and modes rather than assuming one category sounds better. |
| Comfort and isolation | Fit and ear-tip choice vary from person to person. | Over-ear cushion, pressure and weight also vary by model and listener. | Try the fit if possible; in-ear isolation depends on a good seal. |
| Noise control | Fit can provide passive isolation; some wired models have ANC. | Many models offer ANC, but features vary. | Check whether ANC requires power and whether it works in wired mode. |
| Compatibility | The plug must match the device, or a compatible adapter is needed. | Useful with devices that lack a headphone jack, provided Bluetooth is supported. | Confirm the device port, adapter support, controls and codec compatibility. |
Does wired or wireless sound better?
There is no reliable rule that wired earbuds always sound better. RTINGS’ editorial assessment is that most listeners notice little difference between wired and wireless headphones. Sound depends on the model’s tuning, fit, source device, processing and listening mode, as well as the wireless codec and its implementation. RTINGS’ wired-versus-wireless comparison also notes that a headphone supporting both modes can sound different when powered than it does in passive mode, because digital signal processing (DSP) can change its frequency response.

A wired connection avoids Bluetooth pairing and codec mismatch. With wireless playback, the headphone and source device need to support a compatible codec, and settings or interference can affect audio quality and connection stability. A codec listed on a headphone’s specifications is not useful if your phone or computer does not support it. SoundGuys notes that AAC is relevant for iOS, while AAC performance on Android can vary by hardware; check both ends of the connection rather than choosing by codec name alone. SoundGuys’ headphone buying guide explains codec considerations.
Which is better for gaming, recording or video?
For latency-sensitive work, passive wired analog earbuds or headphones are the predictable choice: they do not rely on a Bluetooth audio link. This is useful for gaming, recording, editing and monitoring when audio timing matters. It is not a guarantee that every wired product has zero added delay: a wired model that processes audio for ANC or EQ may add latency.

Bluetooth latency varies by product, codec and setup. RTINGS’ 2025 tests reported these readings for specific headphone-and-codec combinations—not general values for those codecs or for Bluetooth headphones as a class:
| Headphone and codec tested | RTINGS latency reading |
|---|---|
| Sonos Ace, SBC | 272 ms |
| Sonos Ace, aptX | 265 ms |
| Sonos Ace, aptX Adaptive High Quality | 353 ms |
| Sonos Ace, aptX Adaptive Low Latency | 75 ms |
| Sony WH-1000XM5, SBC | 241 ms |
| Sony WH-1000XM5, LDAC | 233 ms |
Some gaming headsets use dedicated 2.4 GHz transmitters designed to reduce delay. That is a different setup from ordinary Bluetooth: check measured performance and compatibility with your console, computer or other platform rather than treating a Bluetooth codec label as proof of low latency. RTINGS provides the model-specific figures in its comparison, and SoundGuys discusses connection choices for gaming in its wired-versus-wireless guide.

How fit, comfort and portability affect the choice
Comfort is personal. Over-ear headphones are typically more cushioned for long sessions, while on-ear models press against the ears. In-ear products can feel intrusive or uncomfortable for some listeners; open-fit earbuds may feel less intrusive but generally isolate less. In-ear passive isolation depends on getting a good seal. In-ears and earbuds are usually easier to carry than over-ear headphones, but the best fit depends on your ears and how long you plan to wear them. RTINGS compares these form factors in its headphone type guide.
For exercise, a cable can snag on clothing or equipment. A secure in-ear fit or stability hooks may help; over-ear and on-ear designs can shift during activity, and their earpads may retain sweat. Consider whether you need to hear your surroundings, as well as comfort and stability, when choosing headphones for a workout.

Battery, ANC and hybrid wired-and-wireless models
Wireless headphones need battery power for wireless use. Some hybrid models also require power when connected by cable, particularly if you want to use ANC or DSP. Others allow passive wired playback. The details vary by product, so check its manual for whether a cable works when the battery is depleted and which features remain available in wired mode.
Wireless models commonly include extras such as ANC or multipoint connection, but neither feature is guaranteed. Wired products can also include ANC, which may need active power. Choose based on the features you will actually use, not on the connection type alone.

Check your phone or computer before buying wired earbuds
Identify the device’s audio connection first. Some phones accept compatible USB-C earbuds directly. If you want to keep using 3.5 mm earbuds with a USB-C phone, you may need a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter; confirm that it works with your exact device. USB-C headphones may contain their own digital-to-analog converter (DAC), while 3.5 mm headphones ordinarily rely on the device’s DAC. The connector alone does not establish which will sound better. TechRadar outlines wired earbud and adapter considerations in its wired earbud guide.

Choose based on how you will use them
Choose wired earbuds if
- You want compact earbuds that do not need charging and your device has a compatible connection.
- You need dependable timing for gaming, recording, editing or monitoring, and the model is passive rather than processing audio.
- You do not mind managing a cable and have checked that its connector or adapter works with your device.
Choose wireless headphones if
- You want to move freely while commuting, working or exercising.
- You value features such as ANC and have checked which features are available on the model.
- You are comfortable managing battery charging and have confirmed the headphone’s codec and Bluetooth features work with your source device.
Consider a hybrid model if
- You want both Bluetooth and cable playback.
- You have checked whether wired listening works without battery power and whether ANC or DSP remains available in that mode.
