How to Choose Between vLLM, NVIDIA Triton, and Hugging Face TGI for LLM Serving

vLLM is LLM-focused, Triton is a broader inference platform whose LLM behavior depends on its backend, and TGI is in maintenance mode. Choose by compatibility and measured workload performance.

For a new deployment focused on LLM generation, start by evaluating vLLM if it supports your model, hardware, and API needs. Consider NVIDIA Triton when you need a broader inference platform for multiple model types, configurable scheduling, or an existing Triton environment. Hugging Face TGI has documented serving capabilities, but its official documentation says it is in maintenance mode—a significant factor for a new long-lived deployment. None of these choices is proven universally fastest: benchmark the exact model, hardware, traffic, and configuration you plan to run.

How the three serving options differ

Option What it is Strongest reason to evaluate it Important qualification
vLLM An inference and serving library focused on LLMs. Your workload is primarily LLM generation and the project supports your model, accelerator, and required features. Confirm support for the exact model architecture and behavior you need; broad architecture support does not guarantee every model-specific feature works as required. vLLM documentation
NVIDIA Triton A general inference server that serves models from multiple frameworks using selectable backends. You need a shared serving platform for different model types, configurable model scheduling, or integration with an existing Triton deployment. For LLMs, Triton does not identify the execution engine by itself: backend, release, model, and configuration determine how inference runs. Triton documentation
Hugging Face TGI An LLM serving toolkit with features including continuous batching, streaming, tensor parallelism, metrics and tracing, quantization, and structured generation. You already operate TGI or its documented features fit a deployment whose support horizon you have assessed. Hugging Face says TGI is in maintenance mode, with future contributions limited to minor bug fixes, documentation improvements, and lightweight maintenance. TGI documentation

Feature lists describe capabilities, not comparative results. The official documentation reviewed does not establish a matched benchmark showing that one of the three is categorically faster.

When vLLM is a good first candidate

vLLM is the most direct fit to evaluate when serving LLM generation is the central job. Its documentation describes continuous batching, PagedAttention for KV-memory management, chunked prefill, prefix caching, quantization, speculative decoding, streaming, structured output, and distributed inference. Those features can make it a relevant candidate, but their presence in project documentation does not predict performance for your workload. See the vLLM documentation.

Check the exact checkpoint and architecture, accelerator, quantization method, parallelism plan, and application interface. The online serving reference lists completions, chat completions, batch chat completions, responses, embeddings, and audio-related endpoints. Some interfaces apply only to particular model types, and chat completions require a chat template. Verify the endpoint and parameters your application actually uses against the current API reference. vLLM OpenAI-compatible server reference.

When Triton is a better fit

Triton is worth evaluating when your serving environment includes more than LLMs or your organization already uses its model management and serving model. NVIDIA documents per-model schedulers, configurable scheduling and batching, multiple protocols, metrics, and model pipelines. That broader platform role is distinct from choosing an LLM execution engine. Triton architecture documentation.

Choose the LLM backend deliberately

NVIDIA’s current LLM deployment guide demonstrates a TensorRT-LLM PyTorch backend serving supported Hugging Face models directly, without TensorRT engine compilation. The guide says the older TensorRT engine-build workflow is deprecated and being removed. Follow the current instructions rather than assuming an older tutorial still describes the recommended path, and verify that the Triton container, TensorRT-LLM release, backend, model, and configuration match. How TGI’s maintenance status should affect the choice

Hugging Face’s TGI documentation states that the project is in maintenance mode and that future contributions will be limited to minor bug fixes, documentation improvements, and lightweight maintenance. It also notes that the approach of building optimized engines around Transformers architectures has been adopted by downstream projects such as vLLM and SGLang, which it recommends going forward. For a new long-lived service, include that stated maintenance outlook in your assessment of upgrades, support expectations, and operational risk. If you already run TGI, maintenance mode alone does not show that the service must be shut down: weigh your support needs and migration cost against the behavior and stability of the system you have in production. Compare candidates against your requirements

Before choosing, establish a shortlist using requirements that can disqualify an option before performance testing:

  • Model and features: Confirm the precise architecture, tokenizer and chat template, multimodal requirements, adapters, quantization, structured output, and decoding features your workload needs.
  • API contract: Check the exact endpoints, parameters, and streaming behavior used by your applications. An OpenAI-compatible interface only reduces integration work if it supports the specific operations you require.
  • Hardware and backend: Verify the accelerator, driver, runtime, kernel, and model combination. With Triton, explicitly select and validate the LLM backend; for every option, check version-specific support.
  • Operations: Account for deployment topology, observability, rollout and model management, team familiarity, non-LLM model integration, and support expectations.
  • Maintenance horizon: Consider TGI’s documented maintenance mode and confirm the release-specific maturity and support posture of the vLLM or Triton backend you intend to deploy.

Benchmark the workload you will actually serve

Once candidates meet the functional requirements, test them under equivalent conditions. A demo, feature checklist, or result from a different model and machine is not a reliable ranking for your deployment.

  1. Pin the software and model: Record server and backend versions, model revision, and precision for every run.
  2. Match the environment: Use the same accelerator model and count, and document relevant runtime and server settings.
  3. Reproduce the request mix: Match prompt and output token distributions, concurrency or request rate, endpoints, and streaming behavior to the traffic you expect.
  4. Measure service behavior: Track time to first token, inter-token latency, throughput, tail latency, memory use, and cost under the same conditions.
  5. Make the result auditable: Record warm-up procedure and evaluation date, then separate your measured results from capabilities claimed in project or vendor documentation.

Use those measurements to choose among options that already meet your compatibility and operational requirements. Without matched tests for your own conditions, the sources do not support a universal speed winner.
