How to Choose Between VHF and UHF Radios for Your Terrain and Range

VHF can be a sensible first comparison for open rural paths, while UHF may suit some built-up settings. Terrain, antennas, repeaters, and system compatibility determine what works in practice.

Neither VHF nor UHF is always the better choice for range. VHF is often a sensible first option for open or rural routes, while UHF is worth considering in built-up areas. But terrain, antenna placement, repeaters, interference, and the radio system itself can outweigh the band. Choose by comparing complete systems on the paths where you will use them—not by a promised mileage figure.

Start with the path, not the band

Radio signals can be obstructed or weakened by hills, ridges, buildings, and vegetation. Terrain and the height of transmitting and receiving antennas affect signal attenuation at VHF and higher frequencies, according to NTIA/ITS guidance on terrain-based propagation modeling.

Direct-wave VHF and UHF communication is commonly considered in line-of-sight terms. Raising an antenna or using a well-sited repeater can improve the path, but a ridge or dense obstruction may still dominate the result. The ARRL Radio Lab Handbook explains the role of line of sight and antenna elevation.

  • Terrain and path profile: Identify hills, ridges, valleys, buildings, and vegetation between users.
  • Antenna setup: Compare antenna height, type, and placement—not just the radio frequency.
  • Repeaters: Check whether a compatible repeater is available and where it is located.
  • Local conditions: Account for clutter, foliage, interference, and the reliability you need.

Which band is a better starting point for your terrain?

Open countryside and longer rural paths

Compare VHF-capable systems first when the local service and authorized frequencies support them. NTIA land-mobile planning describes a VHF advantage over UHF for long-distance communication in a particular rural and mountainous comparison. That is a scenario-specific tendency, not a guarantee that a VHF radio will outperform every UHF system on every route.

Town streets and built-up areas

UHF can be a useful candidate in urban settings, but it does not automatically penetrate every building better. Construction materials, whether users are indoors or outdoors, surrounding clutter, interference, and the system design all affect coverage. Compare the actual systems at the locations where they will be used.

Hills, mountains, and forest

Give the terrain profile and vegetation more weight than a general band rule. A ridge can block a path regardless of whether the radios use VHF or UHF. NTIA measurements found that UHF’s natural isolation for beyond-line-of-sight locations on smooth terrain was reduced in rough terrain. Those measurements used specific frequencies, low antennas, and field locations, so they do not predict coverage for every user or radio.

Mixed terrain or coverage that must be dependable

Compare authorized frequencies and complete system designs, including antenna placement and repeater access. If reliability matters, assess coverage on the actual route or at the sites where users will operate rather than relying on a broad rural-versus-urban rule.

Why a range estimate can miss your real-world result

Coverage models are planning aids, not promises. The Longley-Rice/ITS model covers 20 MHz to 20 GHz and estimates median attenuation and variability over distance and time. Complex terrain and foliage can be difficult to represent accurately.

An August 2026 NTIA/ITS report studied VHF signals in forested, mountainous terrain around Green Bank, West Virginia. At that study site, the model under-predicted measured path loss by a median of approximately 13 dB; the report attributed the difference primarily to foliage attenuation and terrain diffraction beyond the model’s double-knife-edge representation. This site-specific finding does not establish a general VHF-versus-UHF ranking. Read the 2026 NTIA/ITS Green Bank report alongside the NTIA/ITS model guide when considering model estimates.

Another NTIA study measured UHF at 230 and 415.9 MHz over 2–45 km paths in hilly and rocky areas in Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington. The tests used antennas below 3 m and took place from June through November 1968. They support a caution about rough terrain reducing UHF’s beyond-line-of-sight isolation advantage on smooth terrain; their test distances are not expected consumer-radio range figures. See NTIA’s UHF Radio Propagation Data.

Check authorization and compatibility before choosing a radio

Frequency allocations and permission to transmit depend on the country, radio service, and intended use. NTIA’s land-mobile planning material gives U.S. allocation examples; it is not a universal channel plan or a determination that a particular radio or frequency is legal for your use. Check the current rules for your location and service, then confirm that the radios, frequencies, and any repeater are compatible. See NTIA’s land-mobile spectrum requirements chapter.
