Choose an in-memory data store by starting with your application’s required commands and data types, recovery objectives, license and support needs, scaling and failover requirements, and operational constraints—not a universal speed ranking. Shortlist only products that meet those requirements, then compare them under the same representative workload and configuration. Redis-compatible APIs can make a trial easier, but compatibility claims do not prove that every command, script, client, or failure case will behave as your application expects.
What should drive the choice?
An in-memory data store is not automatically just a disposable cache. Valkey, for example, describes uses that include databases, caches, message brokers, and streaming engines, and documents data structures, replication, Lua scripting, Sentinel, Cluster, and optional persistence. The right product depends on which of those capabilities your application actually uses and how much operational responsibility your team can take on.

Write down the requirements before comparing products. The following questions are more useful than a generic “fastest database” ranking:
Recommended Free Tools
- Data model and API: Which data structures, commands, scripts, client libraries, modules, or higher-level features must work? Is the application using only basic cache operations, or does it depend on richer query and indexing capabilities?
- Data recovery: Can the data be rebuilt after loss, or must it survive a process or host restart? What is the acceptable amount of lost data and time to recover?
- Availability and scale: Do you need replication, automatic failover, sharding, or an operational topology your team already knows how to manage?
- License and support: Which license is acceptable for your organization and use case? Is community support sufficient, or do you need a commercial support arrangement or service-level agreement?
- Performance and cost: What latency percentiles, throughput, memory use, CPU use, and total operating costs does this workload require?
- Deployment: Will the service be self-managed or managed? Which cloud, region, version, backup options, security controls, and service terms are available?
Separate mandatory requirements from preferences. A feature needed by one production code path is a gate; a feature that might be useful someday is not. This distinction keeps a comparison focused and prevents a long feature list from obscuring the requirements that will determine whether a candidate can actually run the application.

How do the main candidates differ?
| Candidate | When it belongs on the shortlist | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Valkey | When BSD licensing, an open project, and its documented data structures and operations fit the workload. | Confirm required commands and capabilities in the target version, persistence mode, topology, client behavior, and migration effort. The Valkey project’s Introduction documents its use cases, replication, scripting, Sentinel, and Cluster. |
| Redis | When a required capability is integrated into the specific Redis distribution or product being considered, or its support and operational model fit the team. | Distinguish Redis Open Source from Redis Software or Cloud capabilities. Verify feature availability, version, edition, applicable license, and service terms. The Redis comparison page is vendor-authored and can change. |
| Dragonfly | When its documented Redis and Memcached API compatibility and multithreaded, shared-nothing architecture appear relevant to the workload. | Test the application’s exact commands, client libraries, scripts, persistence, replication, cluster behavior, observability, and production support before treating it as a replacement. |
| Memcached | When the requirement is deliberately a cache and its simpler API and operational model are sufficient. | Check current documentation for the exact deployment and managed-service environment. The available comparison evidence here does not establish a detailed feature-by-feature comparison with the other candidates. |
The table is a shortlist filter, not a product verdict. For details that can change by version or edition—especially feature availability, license, and managed-service capabilities—check the current documentation for the exact artifact or service you plan to deploy.
When is Valkey a good fit?
Evaluate Valkey when its BSD license is important to your organization and the target version provides the data structures and operational features your application needs. The Valkey project describes it as an in-memory data-structure store used for databases, caches, messaging, and streaming. Its documentation also covers replication, Lua scripting, Sentinel, and Cluster, so it is not limited to simple key-value caching.
Its persistence support gives teams choices rather than imposing a single assumption about what “in-memory” means. Valkey documents snapshotting, write logging, a combination of the two, or running without persistence. These are materially different operating modes: select one against recovery requirements, test it under load, and make sure the chosen settings are part of the deployment configuration.

When should you evaluate Redis?
Redis is worth evaluating when a feature required by the application is included in the specific Redis distribution or product under consideration, or when the chosen offering supplies support or operations capabilities the team needs. The Redis comparison page describes capabilities such as JSON, time-series, search, and vector search, along with enterprise deployment and operations features. That page is Redis’s own comparison, and feature rows may depend on product, edition, and version; verify each requirement in current product documentation before treating it as decisive.
Be precise about what “Redis” means in a procurement or architecture decision. Redis Open Source, Redis Software, and Redis Cloud are not interchangeable labels for the same capability set. Compare the specific software or managed service, not just the name, and record the edition, release, and feature availability used in your evaluation.
License review is a separate gate. Redis states that Redis Open Source starting with version 8.0 is licensed under AGPLv3, with RSALv2 and SSPLv1 also available as source-available licenses. That is a vendor statement, not a substitute for reviewing the exact code and use case with your organization’s legal process. Confirm the license that applies to the specific artifact you intend to use.

Dragonfly documents Redis and Memcached API compatibility and a multithreaded, shared-nothing architecture. Those characteristics can make it a candidate when an application already uses compatible APIs and the team wants to assess an alternative implementation. They do not establish full behavioral equivalence for your application.

Test the exact command and client surface the application exercises, including scripts and less common error paths. Include persistence, replication, cluster behavior, operational visibility, and production support in the review rather than stopping after a basic connection and a few successful reads and writes.
Dragonfly’s documentation states “25X performance compared to Redis.” Treat that as a vendor performance claim, not an independently reproduced result or a workload-universal expectation. The figure does not establish the outcome for your data sizes, traffic pattern, configuration, hardware, or latency target. A matched test of your workload is the useful basis for a decision.
When is Memcached enough?
Keep Memcached on the list when the requirement is specifically a cache and its simpler API and operating model cover the application’s needs. Do not choose it merely because an application uses caching today: first establish that the application does not rely on richer commands, scripting, persistence, or other behavior required from its current store.

Consult current Memcached documentation and the documentation for your intended managed service, then validate the commands, operational behavior, and limits that matter to your deployment. AWS’s ElastiCache guide includes Memcached, Valkey, and Redis OSS in its managed-engine decision set; that is useful for comparing service choices within that environment, not a universal ranking of all implementations.

How should persistence and recovery affect the decision?
Decide whether the data is disposable, recoverable, or authoritative before selecting a persistence mode. “In-memory” alone does not answer whether data survives restart: Valkey explicitly supports persistence choices as well as no persistence.
| Valkey mode | What the documentation describes | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| RDB | Point-in-time snapshots. | Decide whether snapshots’ recovery characteristics fit the acceptable recovery point and recovery process. |
| AOF | Write logging. | Evaluate the recovery behavior and operational cost against the required durability and performance. |
| RDB and AOF | Combined operation. | Determine whether the combined mode is appropriate for your recovery objectives and operational complexity. |
| No persistence | Persistence disabled. | Use only when the data can be lost and recreated within the application’s recovery requirements. |
The descriptions above identify the documented modes; they do not promise a particular recovery time, data-loss window, or performance cost. Those results depend on the configuration and workload. Test restart and recovery with the settings you intend to operate, and include backup and restore procedures in the service design if the data matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do licensing, support, and deployment change the shortlist?
License, support, and hosting are distinct decisions. A license that fits does not guarantee that the team can operate the software safely; a managed service may reduce some operational work but has its own feature set, regions, terms, and availability constraints.

- Record the exact software: Write down product, distribution, version, and edition for each candidate. This prevents a feature or license claim for one offering from being applied to another.
- Get the license reviewed: Valkey describes itself as BSD-licensed. Redis states that Redis Open Source starting with version 8.0 is AGPLv3-licensed, with RSALv2 and SSPLv1 also available as source-available licenses. Ask the organization’s legal team to review the exact code and usage.
- Specify the support requirement: Decide whether community resources suffice or whether your production service requires a commercial support arrangement or SLA. Verify what is actually offered for the candidate and deployment you select.
- Compare self-managed and managed operation: Include maintenance, monitoring, backups, upgrades, failure handling, and staffing in the operational comparison. Do not assume that a managed option exposes every capability of the underlying software.
- Check availability where you will run it: Confirm provider, region, engine or version, backup options, security controls, and current service terms. The Valkey project home page lists providers; AWS documents an ElastiCache comparison among Memcached, Valkey, and Redis OSS modes. Availability and features vary by service.
Do not add up only infrastructure line items. For a useful total-cost comparison, include the resources needed for representative traffic, the operational work required by each deployment model, and the support arrangement your production requirements demand. The available evidence does not establish comparable prices, so obtain current service-specific quotes or pricing details for your region and configuration.

How do you test candidates fairly?
A benchmark only answers the question its setup represents. To compare candidates, hold the workload and environment as constant as possible, document differences that cannot be held constant, and avoid translating a vendor’s headline result into a forecast for unrelated traffic.
- Pin the candidates: Record each product’s exact version, edition, configuration, client library and client version. Include the planned managed-service engine and region if applicable.
- Reproduce the application workload: Use representative key and value sizes, dataset cardinality, read/write mix, hot-key distribution, client behavior, network placement, and concurrency. Prefer a captured or carefully modeled workload over a synthetic pattern that omits important application behavior.
- Keep settings comparable: Use equivalent persistence and availability settings where the products support them. If a candidate needs a different configuration to provide the required behavior, document the difference rather than concealing it.
- Measure more than average speed: Record throughput, p50/p95/p99 latency, memory use, and CPU. Use the same measurement window and workload phases for each candidate, and note any resource or configuration differences.
- Exercise failures and recovery: If restart, replication, or failover matters, test it explicitly. Measure the behavior your application experiences and check whether the deployment returns to an acceptable state.
- Run compatibility tests: Exercise the real commands, scripts, client libraries, error handling, and operational workflows. A successful connection or basic command test is not a substitute for application-level coverage.
- Publish the scope internally: Preserve versions, configuration, workload definition, hardware or service sizing, and results. This makes the decision interpretable when versions, traffic, or requirements change.
Do not compare one vendor’s peak throughput number with another product’s result from different hardware, client behavior, persistence settings, or test conditions. No independently comparable cross-product benchmark is established here. The useful outcome is a measured result for your workload, plus a clear account of the conditions under which it was obtained.
What migration risks should you check?
Protocol compatibility is a starting point, not a migration plan. Before switching implementations, map what the application and operators depend on, then validate each dependency in the candidate environment.
- Commands and data structures: List what production code actually sends and verify support in the target release, rather than inferring it from a broad API-compatibility statement.
- Client libraries: Test the application’s actual client version, connection handling, timeouts, error responses, and any assumptions about retries.
- Scripts and modules: Identify scripts and additional features on which application paths depend; confirm availability and behavior in the exact edition or implementation.
- Topology: Validate replication, sharding or cluster assumptions, failover behavior, and how clients discover or reconnect to the service.
- Data recovery: Confirm persistence settings, backup procedures, restore steps, and recovery behavior against the service’s recovery objectives.
- Operations: Ensure monitoring, alerting, upgrades, incident procedures, and support escalation are workable for the team that will own the service.
For a migration, run application-level tests against a non-production candidate before directing production traffic to it. Include restart and failure tests when those events affect user-facing behavior. If the candidate differs in a required command, feature, or operational guarantee, treat that as a migration constraint to resolve—not as an edge case that API compatibility will automatically handle.
Which store should you choose?
Use Valkey as a candidate when its BSD license and documented capabilities meet the requirements; evaluate Redis when a required feature or support model belongs to the specific Redis offering; assess Dragonfly when its compatibility and architecture warrant an application-specific test; and keep Memcached in contention for deliberately simple cache workloads. Then make the choice using the same workload, recovery expectations, operating model, and support criteria across viable candidates.
If no candidate meets a mandatory feature, recovery, license, or support requirement, it is not a viable shortlist option regardless of a benchmark result. If multiple candidates qualify, decide on measured latency and throughput alongside recovery behavior, resource use, compatibility, and total operating cost. The best choice is the one that satisfies the workload and can be operated reliably under the team’s actual constraints.
