Choose Supercross for stadium racing on a compact, purpose-built track and a structured night-show program; choose Pro Motocross for outdoor racing on natural terrain, where speed and endurance take center stage. The best fit depends on the specific event’s date, venue, format and conditions—not just the series name.
Supercross vs. Pro Motocross: what changes for spectators?
| What to compare | Supercross | Pro Motocross |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and track | Custom-built, technical tracks inside stadiums; seating and the enclosed event setting put the racing close to the crowd. | Permanent outdoor tracks on natural terrain, with room for the racing to emphasize speed and endurance. |
| Typical season | Winter and spring, typically January through early May. | Summer, with outdoor conditions such as heat and rain affecting the day. |
| Race-day format | Typically timed qualifying, heats, a Last Chance Qualifier, and 250SX and 450SX Main Events. Some rounds use a Triple Crown format instead. | Typically two motos per class, with the combined moto score determining overall placement. |
| What the day feels like | A stadium event with a scheduled progression through qualifying and races; some rounds also offer FanFest. | An outdoor race day shaped more by the natural-terrain course and the weather at the venue. |
Supercross and Pro Motocross are distinct series within the broader SuperMotocross championship structure. The current official championship description counts 17 Supercross rounds and 11 Pro Motocross rounds, followed by two Playoff rounds and one World Championship Final—a 31-event season. Those figures describe the published structure verified in 2026, not a guarantee that future calendars will stay the same.

Choose by the kind of race day you want
Choose Supercross for a stadium experience
- You prefer stadium seating and a purpose-built, technical course.
- You want a winter or spring event, or would rather avoid relying on an outdoor venue.
- You like a race program that builds from qualifying and heats to the Main Events.
A stadium does not automatically mean a roof or weatherproof conditions. Check the specific venue and its event information before assuming the seating is covered.

- You are comfortable planning around summer heat, rain and other venue-specific conditions.
Know what the race program includes
Supercross: qualifying, heats and Main Events
A standard Supercross program includes timed qualifying, heats, a Last Chance Qualifier, and 250SX and 450SX Main Events. The official Supercross FAQ lists Main Event lengths of 20 minutes plus one lap for 450 and 15 minutes plus one lap for 250. These are race durations, not a measure of the full event day; check the particular round’s schedule for timings and any changes.

Some rounds use a Triple Crown format, with three Main Events per class. Do not assume every event follows the standard format: confirm the format for the date you are considering.
Pro Motocross: two motos per class
AMA describes a typical motocross event as having two races, or motos, in each class. Their combined scoring determines overall placement. That format is a key difference from a Supercross program built around qualifying, heats and Main Events.

Check the actual date, venue and event details
The official schedule available in 2026 lists a 17-round 2027 Supercross season and an 11-round 2027 Pro Motocross season. The listed Supercross season begins January 9, 2027; the first listed Pro Motocross round is May 29, 2027, with that series continuing into August. Treat these as examples from the current schedule, not fixed annual dates, and verify the event page before making plans.
- Compare dates and travel. Check the current schedule and event page for the round you could attend, then compare travel time and the rest of your calendar.
- Confirm the venue and conditions. Check whether the stadium is covered, or review the outdoor venue and the forecast as the event approaches. Weather and conditions vary by event.
- Verify the program and extras. Look for that round’s race format and whether FanFest is offered. FanFest may include qualifying access, paddock views, team and sponsor activities, food trucks and merchandise, but availability and access arrangements differ by market; a separate ticket may be required.
- Read the venue’s policies. Supercross directs attendees to the venue for bag rules. Child ticket requirements can vary by event or local rules, so check the venue or event’s current policy.
If you cannot attend in person
The official championship FAQ lists Peacock for viewing in the United States and SMX Video Pass for international viewing. Availability, geographic eligibility and subscription terms can change, so confirm current details with the official service before relying on either option.
