Choose by comparing the services actually available at your address—not by assuming that satellite or a local provider is always better. Check fixed-service options and Starlink availability, confirm that Starlink can be installed with an unobstructed view of the sky, then compare each offer’s full cost, typical performance, data rules, equipment, and contract terms. A local fixed service may suit you better when its address-specific terms meet your needs; Starlink may be worth considering when other available services do not.
Start with your address, not a technology ranking
“Local ISP” is not one type of connection. Depending on where you live, fixed broadband may mean fiber, cable, DSL, or fixed wireless; some places have few practical fixed options. Starlink is a satellite service, and its Residential service is described as fixed-location service. The meaningful comparison is therefore between the specific offers you can order at your home.

Availability is address-specific. A provider may serve one part of a town, building, or road but not another. Even two nearby homes may see different offers. Starlink also asks customers to check service for their own address, and its available plans and offers can vary by region and address. Do not treat a general coverage claim, a neighbor’s plan, or an old quote as confirmation that a particular service is available to you now.
Build a shortlist of real options
For a U.S. address, enter the location in the FCC National Broadband Map to see fixed providers reporting service there, the technologies they report, and advertised speeds. Fixed broadband providers submit location-level availability data twice a year, according to the FCC’s 2025-updated information. The map is a way to identify options to investigate—not a performance test or a guarantee that a provider will accept an order under the terms shown.

The FCC cautions that its map reports availability, not actual performance, affordability, or adoption. Confirm the offer directly with each provider before making a decision. Outside the United States, use the relevant national regulator’s availability resources, if available, and the provider’s own address check; the FCC map is U.S.-specific.
Check the Starlink offer for the same address
Use Starlink’s address check to see whether service and which Residential plan are offered at your location. Plan names, regional coverage, price, offers, and specifications can change. Starlink’s current Residential guidance describes unlimited data across its Residential plans, but availability differs by region and address, and some tiers are offered only in select areas. It describes a top Residential Max tier and 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps tiers in select markets. Those names and tiers should not be assumed to be available at every address or to remain unchanged.
Make a list of every feasible option, including more than one local provider if available. If the only fixed offer is a technology or plan that does not meet your requirements, record that limitation rather than comparing Starlink against an imagined fiber or cable offer.

Compare the complete offer, not the headline price
An advertised monthly price or a maximum speed is not enough to decide. Compare the terms for the actual address and plan, including the recurring bill after any introductory period and any charges necessary to get service working. For U.S. broadband offers, the FCC Broadband Facts label is designed to present important plan information in a comparable format, including price terms, data allowances, fees, typical download and upload speeds, latency, and relevant contract or termination charges.

| What to compare | What to check on each offer | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly and upfront cost | Regular monthly price; introductory price and when it ends; recurring fees; one-time charges; taxes; discounts and their conditions; equipment and installation charges. | The lowest advertised price may not be the lowest ongoing cost, and the amount due to start service can differ from the monthly bill. |
| Typical performance | Typical download speed, upload speed, and latency for the offered plan, as shown in its Broadband Facts label or provider terms. | Downloads, uploads, and delay affect different activities. A download-only headline does not describe the entire connection. |
| Data rules | Included data, overage charges, and whether the provider describes any reduction in speed or priority after a particular usage condition. | “Unlimited” alone does not establish that performance is identical at all times or under all network conditions. |
| Equipment and installation | Required equipment, rental or purchase charges, installation requirements, and whether the home can meet them. | A plan that looks suitable on paper may require a site condition or an additional cost that makes it impractical. |
| Commitment and cancellation | Contract length, early termination charges, and any other relevant cancellation conditions. | These terms matter if you may move, change providers, or need to cancel before an initial term ends. |
| Network and privacy disclosures | Network-management disclosures and privacy information, where relevant to your priorities. | These terms can help explain how a provider manages traffic and handles information; read the provider’s own disclosures for specifics. |
Use the same set of rows for every offer. If a provider does not state a comparable figure, mark it as “not stated” in your notes and ask the provider. Do not fill gaps with a number from another plan, a general technology average, or a neighbor’s experience.
Work out the cost over the period you expect to use the service
Separate recurring costs from one-time costs. Note the regular monthly charge after promotional pricing, then add recurring fees that apply to your household. Separately record the initial equipment, installation, or other one-time charges. If a promotion depends on a condition—such as a limited introductory period or an eligibility rule—write down the condition and the date or event when the price changes.
There is no single time period that fits every household. If you expect to stay for a long time, the ongoing bill may matter most; if you may move soon, installation costs and cancellation terms may weigh more heavily. The useful comparison is the cost under your own likely circumstances, not an assumed universal ranking.

For Residential service, Starlink’s published specifications say users typically experience download speeds between 25 and 220 Mbps, with a majority experiencing speeds over 100 Mbps. The same specifications list typical uploads of 5–20 Mbps and land latency of 25–60 ms. These are Starlink’s provider-published typical figures, not a guarantee for an individual address and not an independent comparison with a local ISP.

Starlink says actual speeds vary by location, time of day, and plan priority, and are not guaranteed. Its specifications also say customers in some remote locations may experience higher latency. Treat the figures as a reference for what Starlink publishes, then compare them with the typical figures for the local plans available to you. A maximum, advertised, or expected speed is not interchangeable with a typical figure; check what each number represents.
Match the connection to what your household does
- Downloads and streaming: Look at typical download performance and how many people or devices may use the connection at once. A plan’s advertised maximum alone does not tell you what to expect at busy times.
- Video calls and sending large files: Give upload performance and latency their own place in the comparison rather than treating download speed as a proxy for both.
- Interactive applications: Pay attention to typical latency and any qualifications. Lower latency can matter for responsiveness, but the published figures available here do not establish how either service will perform in a particular home.
- High or unpredictable usage: Read the data allowance and network-management terms. A stated unlimited allowance is not the same as a promise of identical performance through congestion or at peak times.
These considerations help you decide which fields deserve the most weight; they do not establish that one connection type will meet a particular household’s needs without checking the plan and its terms.
Check Starlink installation feasibility before ordering
Starlink says its kit includes a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. It also says the terminal requires an unobstructed view of the sky. Trees, buildings, or other obstructions at a proposed location can make the installation unsuitable, so check the site before purchasing equipment or committing to service. Starlink points customers to its app to evaluate an installation location.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a possible terminal location. Consider places at the property where the equipment could be mounted and where the required view of the sky may be available.
- Evaluate the location with the Starlink app. Follow the app’s obstruction-checking guidance at the location you are considering. Do not assume that a clear-looking view from indoors or from another part of the property is sufficient.
- Consider how the equipment can be installed. Check whether the included mount and the available location work for your property, and whether any installation work or additional equipment may be needed. Confirm potential costs and requirements rather than assuming they are included.
- Include the site in your offer comparison. Record whether installation is feasible and any known cost or practical constraint alongside the plan’s price and performance. If the site cannot provide the required sky view, the service may not be a workable option for that home.
The provider’s equipment description does not establish what installation will cost at your property or whether a particular mounting arrangement will work. Those details depend on the location and the current offer, so verify them before ordering.

Understand why “unlimited” does not mean identical speeds all day
Starlink’s Residential plan guidance says its Residential plans include unlimited data, but the fair-use policy says congestion and peak usage may reduce performance. Its specifications also say speeds vary with location, time, and plan priority. Read these statements together: the plan’s data allowance and the connection’s performance under network conditions are separate questions.
Apply the same care to a local ISP. Check the specific offer’s data terms, overage rules, speed reductions, and network-management disclosures rather than assuming that all fixed providers handle usage alike. The relevant comparison is the terms each provider publishes for the service you can order, not a broad claim about satellite or wired networks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a consistent decision process
- Confirm serviceability. Check each fixed provider for your exact address and check Starlink availability for that same address. Remove options that cannot actually be ordered.
- Verify the physical constraints. For Starlink, assess the proposed installation location with its app and consider the clear-sky requirement. For every provider, verify any installation or equipment requirements that could prevent service or add cost.
- Collect the current terms. Get the current offer and Broadband Facts label for each U.S. fixed-broadband plan where available. Record price after promotions, typical download and upload speeds, latency, data rules, fees, equipment, installation, contract, and cancellation terms.
- Compare matching categories. Put typical performance beside typical performance, recurring price beside recurring price, and data policy beside data policy. Keep one-time charges separate from the recurring bill.
- Weight the fields that matter at home. Decide what the household needs from downloads, uploads, responsiveness, data terms, and installation practicality. Do not let a strong number in one category conceal a problem in another.
- Ask about missing or ambiguous terms. If a price, fee, or performance figure is unclear, ask the provider to confirm it for your address and plan. Do not infer that an omitted term is zero or that a general statement applies to the exact offer.
- Choose the best-supported fit. Select the service whose verified terms and installation conditions best match your priorities and budget. If the information is incomplete, resolve that gap before treating the comparison as final.
Common comparison mistakes
Assuming “local ISP” means fiber
The FCC map includes multiple fixed technologies, including cable, fiber, DSL, and fixed wireless, as well as satellite listings. A local provider’s name or local presence does not identify the connection type. Confirm the technology and offer for the address instead of comparing Starlink with a fixed service that may not be available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A promotion may be temporary, conditional, or accompanied by other charges. Compare the regular price and the terms that determine when a promotion ends, then include recurring and one-time costs in separate parts of your notes.

Treating a map or speed claim as a guarantee
The FCC National Broadband Map is an availability resource, not a test of actual service quality. Starlink’s published typical figures are not guaranteed results for a particular location. Neither source substitutes for the specific provider’s current offer and terms.
Assuming unlimited data guarantees steady performance
Data allowance and network performance are different measures. Starlink’s fair-use policy notes that congestion and peak usage may reduce performance, so read its usage policy alongside its plan description. For a local ISP, consult that offer’s own data and network-management terms.
Ordering before checking the installation site
Starlink requires an unobstructed sky view, and the kit’s physical components need a workable location. Check the proposed site with the Starlink app before buying the kit; do not treat service availability at an address as proof that installation will be feasible at the property.

Provider offers, coverage, plan names, prices, and specifications can change. Recheck the address-specific availability and current terms when you are ready to order. For a U.S. fixed-broadband offer, use the current Broadband Facts label; for Starlink, check the current plan shown for your address and the accompanying service and fair-use terms. The FCC map is updated using availability filings made twice each year, so provider confirmation remains important for an order decision.
No universal winner follows from published provider specifications or regulatory comparison tools. These sources offer criteria and claims to compare, not an independent head-to-head test at your home. Your decision should rest on verified local availability, the actual plan terms, and whether the installation can work at the property.
