How to Choose Between Performance and Quality Modes on Xbox

Performance and quality modes are defined by each game, not by a universal Xbox standard. Compare the mode description, frame-rate target, rendering details, and your display before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a game’s performance mode when responsive motion and a higher frame-rate target matter more to you; choose its quality, graphics, or ray-tracing mode when sharper output or visual effects matter more than the frame-rate trade-off. These labels are not Xbox-wide standards: each game defines its modes, and the right choice depends on the specific title, console, display, and your preference.

What the mode names do—and do not—tell you

Performance modes commonly prioritize higher or steadier frame rates, which can make motion feel smoother and controls feel more immediate. Quality or graphics modes may instead emphasize resolution, image sharpness, visual effects, or ray tracing. Those are common tendencies, not guarantees: a mode name alone does not establish a particular frame rate, resolution, or feature set.

Xbox has described frame rate and resolution as creative decisions left to game developers. As a result, there is no single Xbox specification for “performance” or “quality,” and two games can use similar labels for quite different trade-offs. Some games use names such as “balanced” or “ray tracing”; others combine visual and motion goals without offering a simple pair of named choices.

It also helps to distinguish a game’s rendering resolution from the signal sent to the display. A game might render at one resolution and output at another; those figures describe different parts of the image pipeline. Some games also use dynamic resolution scaling, which can adjust rendering resolution rather than hold it at one fixed figure. Read the game’s own description for whether a listed resolution is a render target or output resolution and whether it is dynamic.

Frame-rate figures also need context. A stated number may be a target for a particular mode, not proof that every scene in every later version will remain at that exact rate. The cited game examples below come from Xbox Wire reporting in 2020 and 2021; they illustrate developers’ choices at the time, rather than establish current settings for every patch. For the version installed on your console, the current menu and developer notes are the most useful references.

Choose according to what matters in this game

Favor performance when motion and response are the priority

Try the higher-frame-rate option first if you care most about smooth motion or responsive controls, particularly in fast action or racing. Codemasters Technical Director David Springate made the case for frame rate in a June 25, 2020 Xbox Wire discussion of DiRT 5: “Players will experience the strongest sense of speed and responsiveness at the highest frame rate.” That is a developer’s explanation of the design goal, not a measured promise about every Xbox game or player’s experience.

Check that your display can support the mode’s refresh-rate requirement. A mode’s target frame rate and a screen’s refresh rate are related but not interchangeable specifications: the display must be compatible with the mode for you to use the intended high-refresh experience. Requirements vary by game, so do not assume that every performance mode requires a 120 Hz screen—or that a 120 Hz screen guarantees a particular game will run at 120 fps.

A 120 Hz-compatible TV or gaming monitor is relevant only if the particular game and mode call for that refresh rate and your current screen does not support it. DOOM Eternal Update 6 is a documented example: its Performance Mode required a compatible 120 Hz display. That does not make a new display a general Xbox requirement. Check the mode’s conditions against the specifications of the TV or monitor you already own before considering an upgrade.

Favor graphics or ray tracing when visual detail is the priority

Choose a graphics, quality, or ray-tracing option if the specific effects it adds are worth accepting its lower frame-rate target. Depending on the game, those effects may include ray-traced reflections or transparency, more detailed presentation, or a different resolution strategy. Check the mode description rather than assuming that “quality” always means higher resolution, or that “ray tracing” means the game uses its highest resolution.

Control Ultimate Edition shows why reading the feature list matters. Xbox Wire’s 2021 description of the Series X Graphics Mode specified a 30 fps target and ray tracing for transparency and reflections. Its Performance Mode targeted 60 fps without that graphics-mode feature set. Both were described with 1440p render resolution and 4K output, so the distinction was not simply “higher resolution versus lower resolution.” Xbox Wire later added an editor’s correction confirming the 1440p render-resolution figure.

Use the game, not the label, to break a tie

When unsure, read the description for each mode in the game’s settings, then try each option in a representative section if switching is straightforward. Pay attention to the same things you care about while playing: whether motion feels smooth, whether controls feel responsive, and whether the image or effects improve enough to matter to you. This is a personal preference check, not a substitute for a published specification or a promise that every player will notice the same difference.

Compare like with like when testing. Use a similar scene or activity in each mode, and consider what you are trying to decide: the motion during a turn or camera movement, the response during an action, or the visibility of an effect such as a reflection. A static menu or paused screen may help you inspect detail, but it cannot answer how motion feels during play. If the difference is not meaningful to you, there is no need to choose a mode simply because its name sounds more advanced.

  • For a fast-moving game, prioritize the mode’s frame-rate target and the display requirement.
  • For a game where reflections, transparency, or image detail are central to what you enjoy, inspect the visual mode’s feature description and its frame-rate target.
  • If resolution figures are listed, identify whether they describe rendering or output, and look for a dynamic-resolution qualification.
  • If the game does not offer named modes, do not assume there is a setting to change; developers may tune motion and image quality together.

Examples: why checking the individual game matters

The specifications below are historical examples reported in Xbox Wire articles from 2020 and 2021. They show how different the trade-offs can be; they are not universal Xbox benchmarks or confirmation that every later update still uses those settings. Check the game’s current menu and developer notes for current behavior.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Xbox Series X High-frame-rate option 4K / 120 fps Moon Studios described this option in Xbox Wire reporting in 2020; the 120 fps experience requires a compatible TV.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Xbox Series X Supersampled option 6K rendering at 60 fps, with a 4K final image Moon Studios described on-the-fly switching between the options.
Fortnite, Xbox Series X|S Developer-described design Series X ran at 4K / 60 fps; Series S targeted 1080p Epic Games Lead Console Programmer Ben Woodhouse described dynamic resolution and fewer dropped frames than the prior generation. The example illustrates a design approach, not a pair of player-selectable modes.

DOOM Eternal Update 6 makes the labels’ trade-offs especially easy to see, but its numbers should be read as a dated, game-specific example. In Xbox Wire’s June 29, 2021 description, Series X Performance Mode was listed at 1800p/120 fps, Balanced at 2160p/60 fps, and Ray Tracing at 1800p/60 fps. Series S Performance was listed at 1080p/120 fps and Balanced at 1440p/60 fps. Dynamic resolution scaling applied across the listed modes. The article also said that the Balanced and Performance modes did not include ray tracing, while Performance required a 120 Hz-compatible display.

That set of figures shows why a single resolution number cannot summarize a mode. The higher frame-rate option did not have the highest listed resolution, and the mode with ray tracing had a different combination of target and effects from Balanced. Dynamic scaling is another qualification: the listed resolution should not be mistaken for a promise that rendering stays at one fixed resolution in every moment of play.

Control adds a different comparison. Xbox Wire described Series X Performance Mode as targeting 60 fps with 1440p rendering and 4K output; Graphics Mode targeted 30 fps with the same render and output figures, adding ray tracing for transparency and reflections. The Series S Performance Mode was reported at 60 fps, with 900p rendering and 1080p output. These examples should not be used to infer that Series S and Series X have matching modes, or that one console’s listed numbers apply to another.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps shows that a developer can present a choice in terms other than a conventional Performance/Quality pair. Moon Studios described a 4K/120 fps option and a 6K supersampled rendering mode at 60 fps with a 4K final image, with switching between the options available on the fly. Its Xbox Wire coverage specified a compatible TV for the 120 fps experience. Here, “6K” describes rendering for a supersampled 4K image, not the final output resolution.

Fortnite offers a useful counterexample to the idea that every game has two selectable modes. In Xbox Wire’s November 12, 2020 account, Epic Games Lead Console Programmer Ben Woodhouse said the Series X version ran at 4K/60 fps and Series S targeted 1080p, with dynamic resolution and fewer dropped frames than the prior generation according to the developer. Woodhouse said the team wanted to use the added power “to make the game feel more alive, not just to increase the graphics settings and resolution.” The account describes the developers’ design, rather than a pair of settings players could choose between.

Xbox’s broader framing was that performance and image quality are not the only considerations. Jason Ronald, then Director of Product Management on Xbox Series X, said in a March 16, 2020 Xbox Wire article, “we don’t believe this generation will be defined by graphics or resolution alone.” These historical statements describe design priorities; they do not quantify a universal performance-mode advantage. The cited sources do not provide an across-games measurement of how much more responsive a performance mode feels.

Check display compatibility before changing hardware

Start with the display you already have. Find the game’s stated requirement and compare it with your TV or monitor’s supported refresh rate and resolution. DOOM Eternal Update 6 is a documented example where Performance Mode requires a 120 Hz-compatible display. That is a title-specific requirement, not a reason to buy a new screen for every game or for every performance mode.

When a mode lists a resolution, make sure the display can accept the relevant output signal, and note whether the game distinguishes output resolution from its render resolution. If the current screen does not support the mode’s required refresh rate, the game may not offer the intended experience. The available modes and requirements can also differ between Series X and Series S, as the DOOM Eternal and Control examples show.

Before shopping for a display, look for the game’s specific refresh-rate requirement and then verify your screen’s supported specifications. A 120 Hz-compatible gaming display is worth considering only if you want a mode that requires it and your existing TV or monitor cannot meet that condition. No recommendation to upgrade follows from the examples alone: the 120 Hz requirement in DOOM Eternal does not establish the needs of other games, and no particular display model or product listing is necessary to make the choice.

A practical way to choose in the game

  1. Open the game’s settings. Look for the graphics, video, display, or performance section; the exact menu name and location vary by title.
  2. Read every mode description. Note the target frame rate, resolution, visual features, console model, and any display compatibility condition the game states.
  3. Separate render resolution from output resolution. If both are given, do not treat them as the same number. Check whether the game says resolution is dynamic.
  4. Match the trade-off to the activity. Start with the frame-rate-focused option if motion and control response matter most. Start with the visual-effects option if its specific image features matter more to you.
  5. Try both in comparable gameplay. If switching is easy, use the same kind of scene or activity and decide which difference you value. Avoid judging solely from a static menu image if motion is what you are comparing.
  6. Recheck after major updates. The cited game specifications are from 2020–2021 reporting, so use current in-game descriptions and developer notes for the installed version rather than assuming an older configuration still applies.

As you compare, keep the six useful axes in view: the target frame rate; render versus output resolution; effects such as ray tracing, reflections, or supersampling; whether resolution is dynamic or fixed; the console model; and the display’s refresh-rate and resolution compatibility. A game menu may not spell out every item, but noting which information is available makes it easier to avoid drawing conclusions from a label alone.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the labels are standardized. “Balanced,” “graphics,” and “ray tracing” are developer-defined names, not interchangeable promises across titles.
  • Reading a resolution as a guarantee. A reported number may refer to render resolution or output, and dynamic scaling can change the rendering resolution during play.
  • Assuming a high frame-rate target works on every screen. Confirm the specific display requirement for the game and mode; DOOM Eternal’s 120 fps option is one example with a 120 Hz compatibility requirement.
  • Expecting every game to offer a mode switch. Developers may make a combined optimization, as Epic described for Fortnite, without exposing separate performance and quality choices.
  • Treating an old article as a current patch note. The examples here document what developers or Xbox Wire reported at the time. Later patches may change behavior, so check the current game.
  • Assuming one option is objectively best. The available evidence does not establish a universal numerical improvement in responsiveness across Xbox games. The right selection depends on the game and what you notice and value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Performance Mode always 120 fps on Xbox?

No. Performance is not a standardized Xbox specification. Developers set each game’s modes, targets, and requirements. DOOM Eternal Update 6 was one 2021 example with 120 fps Performance Mode, and it required a 120 Hz-compatible display; other games may use different targets or offer no mode switch.

Does Quality or Graphics Mode always mean higher resolution?

No. A graphics mode may prioritize visual effects such as ray-traced reflections or transparency rather than a higher listed resolution. In Control Ultimate Edition on Series X, Xbox Wire reported 1440p render resolution with 4K output for both Performance and Graphics modes; Graphics targeted 30 fps and added ray tracing, while Performance targeted 60 fps.

What is the difference between render resolution and output resolution?

Render resolution is the resolution at which the game renders its image; output resolution is the signal sent to the display. They can differ. Control Ultimate Edition’s Series X modes were reported at 1440p render resolution with 4K output, while Series S Performance was reported at 900p render resolution with 1080p output.

Do I need a 120 Hz TV or monitor for Xbox Performance Mode?

Not in every game. Check the specific mode’s requirements. Xbox Wire’s June 29, 2021 description of DOOM Eternal Update 6 said Performance Mode required a 120 Hz-compatible display. That is a title-specific condition, not a general rule for all performance modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I switch between modes while playing?

It depends on the game. Moon Studios described on-the-fly switching between two Ori and the Will of the Wisps options, but that should not be assumed for other titles. Consult the game’s settings and description; some games, such as the Fortnite design described by Epic in 2020, may not expose a simple pair of player-selectable modes.

Which Xbox mode should I choose for fast action or racing?

If motion and responsiveness matter most to you, try the game’s higher-frame-rate option first, provided your display meets its requirements. Codemasters Technical Director David Springate said of DiRT 5 in a June 25, 2020 Xbox Wire article that players would experience the strongest sense of speed and responsiveness at the highest frame rate. That is a developer’s design explanation, not a guarantee about every game or player.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal Xbox winner: check the current game-specific mode description, compare frame-rate target, rendering and output resolution, effects, console and display requirements, then try the options in comparable gameplay. Choose the motion-focused option if responsiveness matters more; choose the visual option if its particular detail or effects justify the trade-off for you.
