How to Choose Between OpenWrt and OPNsense for a Home Network

OpenWrt suits supported router-sized devices and Wi-Fi; OPNsense suits dedicated x86-64 firewalls. Compare compatibility, features and hardware needs before choosing.

Choose OpenWrt if you want a supported Wi-Fi router or compact networking device to handle routing, firewalling, wireless and related services. Choose OPNsense if you want a dedicated firewall on compatible x86-64 hardware, with documented features such as VLANs, VPN, traffic shaping, monitoring and intrusion detection or prevention. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on your device, network needs and willingness to select and maintain the hardware.

Start with the hardware you want to use

OpenWrt: a networking device, often with Wi-Fi

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution focused on networking. The project describes software for routing, firewalling, quality of service (QoS), wireless, bandwidth monitoring and logging. It is commonly a fit when you want one supported router-sized device to provide Wi-Fi and network services.

Do not assume support from a manufacturer or product family name alone. OpenWrt support can vary by exact model and hardware revision. Before buying or flashing a device, check its entry in the OpenWrt Table of Hardware and confirm that it lists a suitable current release and the features you need. OpenWrt’s buyer guide emphasizes that hardware determines what is practical and that there is no single best device for every use.

OPNsense: a dedicated firewall on x86-64

OPNsense is a FreeBSD-based firewall and routing platform. Its installation documentation specifies x86-64 processors, making a PC-class system or compatible firewall appliance the typical hardware path rather than a consumer Wi-Fi router.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

OPNsense documents stateful firewalling, 802.1Q VLANs, VPN, traffic shaping, captive portal, high availability and hardware failover, intrusion detection and inline prevention, reporting and monitoring, and DNS and DHCP services. That breadth makes it a natural starting point if you want firewall functions organized around a dedicated firewall interface. It does not mean OpenWrt cannot perform basic firewall or routing tasks; compare the precise feature and configuration you need.

Match your situation to a starting point

Your situation Starting point What to verify
You want Wi-Fi and routing in a router-sized device. OpenWrt Exact model and hardware revision, current-release support, and the wireless and routing features you need.
You want a dedicated firewall using PC-class hardware. OPNsense x86-64 compatibility, network-interface count and quality, throughput needs, storage, memory, and enabled features.
You need VLANs, VPN, monitoring, IDS/IPS or traffic shaping. Compare the required feature and configuration on both platforms. OPNsense lists these capabilities in its documentation. For OpenWrt, check the exact packages, device capacity and configuration required before deciding.
Your main criterion is speed. Do not choose based on platform reputation alone. The official material cited here does not provide a controlled, comparable benchmark. If throughput is decisive, test the intended hardware with your workload.

Size OPNsense hardware for the workload

OPNsense’s hardware sizing guide treats specifications as guidance tied to throughput and enabled features, not as a promise that any retail mini PC will meet a particular target. Its current guide lists these levels:

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Guide level CPU Memory Storage Qualification
Minimum 1 GHz dual-core 3 GB RAM Not stated in the cited sizing figures For standard features that do not need disk writes; some functions exceed this limited configuration.
Reasonable 1 GHz dual-core 4 GB RAM Not stated in the cited sizing figures OPNsense hardware sizing guidance.
Recommended 1.5 GHz multi-core 8 GB RAM 120 GB SSD OPNsense hardware sizing guidance; not a guarantee for every workload.

CPU, RAM, storage, and the number and quality of network interfaces affect throughput. The guide identifies Intel network cards as a reliable choice based on FreeBSD recommendations; that is not a categorical guarantee for every device or workload. Plan for features that add load: the guide specifically notes that a caching proxy and intrusion-detection alert database writes exceed the limited minimum configuration.

OpenWrt can also be installed on x86 hardware, but x86 alone does not guarantee that a particular PC’s Ethernet hardware will work with the image. Check the OpenWrt x86 installation documentation for that compatibility consideration.

Check updates and extension support

For OpenWrt, verify the specific device’s support and release status in the Table of Hardware before committing to it. For OPNsense, distinguish features included in the base system from optional plugins and packages. OPNsense notes that plugin support may be community or commercial, and plugins that are not kept current can be removed. Its software and update documentation describes security updates and advises users to stay current; include update and support status in your choice.

Make the decision

  1. Choose the form factor. If you want a supported Wi-Fi router or compact networking device, begin with OpenWrt. If you want a separate firewall system, begin with OPNsense.
  2. Verify exact compatibility. For OpenWrt, check the precise device revision and release. For OPNsense, confirm x86-64 compatibility and that the network interfaces are suitable.
  3. List the functions you will actually use. Compare the required wireless, routing, VLAN, VPN, monitoring, traffic-shaping or intrusion-detection configuration, rather than inferring a winner from a feature label.
  4. Size and plan maintenance. For OPNsense, account for CPU, RAM, storage and interfaces at your expected throughput and feature load. For either system, check the update and support status of the device, base system and any extensions you rely on.
  5. Test if performance is the deciding factor. There is no universal speed ranking established by the cited official documentation; use the hardware and workload you expect to run.
