There is no universal “best” graphics driver brand. The right package depends on the adapter, the computer model, the Windows edition and build, and whether the manufacturer has added platform-specific changes. The safest choice is the package offered through an official route for that exact combination.

Which graphics driver should I install?
Start by identifying every graphics adapter in the computer. A PC may have more than one: for example, a laptop can combine integrated graphics with a separate, discrete GPU. Windows needs a compatible driver for each adapter, so choosing a package based only on the computer brand, the newest-looking date, or a general preference for one GPU maker can lead you to the wrong download.

For a laptop or prebuilt PC, check the computer manufacturer’s support page first. Its driver may include changes for that model’s power management, display connections, or hybrid-graphics features. If the manufacturer does not provide a suitable package, or you have a specific reason to use a GPU maker’s package, get it from the official Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD route for the exact adapter and Windows version. Windows Update is another normal source of driver updates.

The choice is therefore a matching exercise rather than a contest between Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD. A correct OEM package can be preferable to a newer generic package if it preserves the features designed for your system. Conversely, an official vendor package can be appropriate when the OEM has no usable release or when the vendor specifically supports your adapter and Windows version.
How to identify your graphics card and Windows version
- Open Device Manager. In Windows, right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- List every adapter. Expand Display adapters and record each GPU shown. If there is more than one, treat each as a separate adapter when checking drivers.
- Check the computer model. Find the model name or number on the PC or in the system information provided by its manufacturer. You will need the exact model to find the correct OEM support page.
- Check the Windows version. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version. Use that information when selecting a package.
Device Manager is also Microsoft’s documented way to see the available GPUs. If an adapter is not listed as you expect, do not guess at a driver based on the PC’s branding; verify the hardware and model using the computer maker’s support information.
Write down the full adapter names, not just the vendor. “Intel,” “NVIDIA,” or “AMD” is not enough to select a package because each vendor supports many products and operating-system combinations. The exact model shown in Display adapters is the identifier to match on a download page or detection tool.
Where to get the driver: the practical choices

Use Windows Update if you want Windows to handle a recommended driver update. If it does not find a compatible package, Microsoft recommends getting the driver from the hardware maker’s official website. Avoid third-party driver-download sites: Microsoft’s support guidance is, “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.”
Official does not mean that every package on a vendor’s site applies to every device. Read the product and operating-system checks on the page, and stop if the selector identifies a different product, an unsupported Windows version, or no matching package.
Should you use the computer maker’s driver or a GPU maker’s?
Start with the OEM package on laptops and prebuilt PCs
Intel recommends checking with the computer manufacturer first because a manufacturer may change driver features, customizations, or packaging. That matters particularly on systems where graphics behavior is connected to model-specific power settings, displays, or switching between integrated and discrete GPUs. Search the exact model on the maker’s support site and select the installed Windows version before downloading.
An OEM package is not automatically the newest package available from Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD. That alone does not make the OEM driver wrong. Compare compatibility and support for your actual PC, rather than treating the most recent date as the deciding factor.
The OEM route is especially important when the computer has a custom display arrangement or relies on coordinated integrated and discrete graphics. The manufacturer has tested its package with that platform’s firmware and components. If the support page lists several Windows versions, select the one actually installed rather than assuming a package for a nearby release will behave identically.

Use a GPU maker’s package when it matches the hardware and OS
If an OEM driver is unavailable, or you have a reason to move to a vendor package, use the official driver page or detection tool for the adapter in Device Manager. Intel provides a supported-driver listing and Intel Driver & Support Assistant. AMD’s Auto-Detect tool can identify supported Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and Windows versions; its product selector is the route for products or versions the tool does not support. NVIDIA’s official download flow asks for product and operating-system details and offers driver-type choices.
Do not install a package merely because it comes from a familiar GPU maker. Confirm the specific product and Windows support shown by the official selector or page. Support and available packages change, so check the current listing for your computer and Windows build at the time you download.
Intel’s warning is direct: “We recommend that you check first with your computer manufacturer and use the driver software provided by them to avoid potential installation incompatibilities.” A generic package can be useful, but it can also remove OEM customizations. Keep the OEM package available so you can restore it if the vendor package creates a problem.

NVIDIA’s official download page describes Production Branch and Studio as the choices most users select for stability and performance. Its advanced search describes beta drivers as preview releases that are still being qualified and may contain significant issues. These are NVIDIA’s descriptions of its own channels, not an independent comparison, and a Studio label does not establish that every release is the right choice for every workload.
If you do not need a preview release, avoid selecting a beta package just because it is newer. Match the available driver type to your needs and the exact GPU and Windows version displayed in NVIDIA’s download flow.
The labels do not override hardware compatibility. First select the exact NVIDIA product and operating system; only then compare the driver types offered for that selection. If the page does not list your adapter or Windows version, do not substitute a nearby model.
How to update through Windows Update
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and let Windows install any recommended driver updates it offers.
- To look for optional packages, open the optional updates area under Windows Update and check Driver updates if that section is available.
- After installation, check whether the graphics issue or compatibility need that prompted the update has been resolved.
Windows automatically downloads and installs driver updates for many devices, and it may offer optional driver updates as well. Windows Update’s selection is targeted using information provided by the driver publisher, so it may not give you a detailed explanation of how its chosen package differs from another available package.

Why a driver date alone is not a reliable guide
A date displayed for a driver is descriptive information supplied by its provider. Microsoft says Windows Update uses provider targeting information to select drivers. As a result, a date that looks older does not, by itself, prove that Windows has chosen an obsolete or incorrect driver.
Use the GPU model, Windows version, computer model, and package compatibility as the decision criteria. If an OEM package supports your exact machine, do not replace it solely because a GPU maker’s listing shows a newer date.
The reverse is also true: a newer date is not proof that a generic package is suitable for an OEM system. A package must be intended for the adapter and operating system, and it must not remove a customization your computer needs. Treat the date as descriptive context, not a ranking system.

What hybrid graphics changes
Some laptops list both integrated and discrete graphics adapters. Their drivers can coexist: integrated graphics can handle lighter tasks with greater power efficiency, while discrete graphics can serve more intensive work at higher power use. The system can switch between them to balance performance and battery consumption.
Identify both adapters and check the computer maker’s guidance if the laptop has model-specific graphics switching, display, or power features. Do not assume that one driver should replace the other just because one GPU is used more often.
When checking downloads, repeat the compatibility process for each listed adapter. An Intel integrated adapter and an NVIDIA or AMD discrete adapter are separate devices, even when they operate together. A package for one does not serve as a substitute for the other.
What to do if a graphics update causes problems
Roll back the recent driver when Windows offers the option
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Follow the prompts and restart if Windows requests it, then check whether the display problem is resolved.
The rollback option is unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver to restore. If it is missing, use the computer maker’s support page to find the appropriate package for the exact model and Windows version.
Restore the OEM package after problems with an Intel generic driver
Intel warns that a generic graphics package can remove OEM customizations. If problems begin after installing a generic Intel package, Intel’s guidance is to reinstall the latest driver from the computer manufacturer. This is a reason to keep the exact PC model and its support page in mind before replacing an OEM package.

Do not make a clean install a universal first step
The official guidance covered here does not establish that every graphics update requires removing all existing drivers or performing a clean install. Start with the matching official package and the recovery options appropriate to the problem; avoid broad driver removal unless the relevant manufacturer’s instructions for your situation call for it.
Likewise, do not uninstall every display adapter simply because one update failed. A laptop may need both its integrated and discrete drivers for normal display output and switching. Identify the affected adapter and follow the applicable OEM or vendor instructions.

During the Windows 11 version 24H2 rollout, Microsoft reported a safeguard hold for some NVIDIA display-driver versions because affected devices could lose display after upgrading. Microsoft advised waiting until an updated NVIDIA driver was installed and Windows offered the upgrade automatically. This was specific to the affected driver versions and that Windows release; it is not a blanket statement that NVIDIA drivers currently block Windows upgrades.

The example illustrates why Windows may delay an operating-system upgrade for a driver combination. If Windows does not offer an upgrade yet, check for an updated official driver and follow Microsoft’s compatibility guidance rather than forcing the upgrade or downloading an unrelated package.

- Picking an NVIDIA beta release simply because it is newer. NVIDIA describes beta drivers as preview releases that may contain significant issues.
- Running a blanket clean install. The reviewed guidance does not make this a universal requirement; use it only when the relevant manufacturer directs you to.
