Choose an SSD when speed, quiet operation, portability, or resistance to physical shock matters most. Choose an HDD when you need more capacity for your budget and can accept slower access. If you need both speed and space, use an SSD for your operating system, applications, and active files, and an HDD for less frequently used data. Before buying an internal drive, check that your computer supports its physical size and interface; whichever type you choose, keep a separate backup.
How HDDs and SSDs differ
An HDD stores data magnetically on spinning disks and uses mechanical parts to read and write it. An SSD stores data in nonvolatile flash memory and has no moving parts. That difference shapes the main tradeoffs: SSDs are the speed-oriented choice, while HDDs are often attractive when you want a lot of storage for the money.

Neither technology is automatically right for every workload. Think about how often you access the data, how much capacity you need, how the drive will be used, and what your device can accept.
Which drive fits your storage needs?
| Your priority | Likely choice | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fast booting, application loading, or frequent access to active files | SSD | Check that the drive’s form factor and interface are supported by your device. |
| A large photo, video, or game library on a budget | HDD | HDDs generally offer more capacity for the money, but access is slower. |
| A portable drive used while traveling | External SSD | Lower weight and greater resistance to physical shock can be useful in transit. |
| A high-capacity external archive or backup | External HDD | It can be a cost-conscious way to store large amounts of data, but protect it from knocks and keep another backup. |
| Both responsive everyday use and room for less-used files | SSD plus HDD | Keep the operating system and active work on the SSD; store large, less frequently accessed files on the HDD. |

Speed and responsiveness
An SSD is the better fit for a computer that needs to boot quickly, launch applications, open frequently used files, or handle regular transfers. An HDD can still store and serve files, but its mechanical operation makes it the slower-access option. For a mixed setup, putting active work on the SSD helps reserve the HDD for capacity.

Capacity and cost
HDDs are generally the capacity-per-budget choice, particularly for large libraries and bulk storage. SSDs are the speed-oriented option. There is no single current price-per-terabyte figure that applies across regions, capacities, and models, so compare the current cost of drives at the capacity you actually need rather than relying on a fixed claimed premium.
Portability, noise, power, and shock
SSDs can be lighter and quieter, use less power, and better resist physical shock than mechanical HDDs. Those traits can matter for a laptop’s battery use or a drive carried in a bag. An external HDD can be useful for high-capacity storage, but it should be handled with care, especially while in use.

Endurance and warranty
Reliability depends on the specific model and workload, not just whether a drive is an HDD or SSD. For a workload that writes large amounts of data, compare the model’s endurance rating and warranty. Neither drive type removes the need for a separate backup.
Check compatibility before buying an internal drive
Do not assume that every drive with a familiar-looking connector will fit or work in your computer. Check the exact computer or motherboard specifications and confirm all of the following:

In particular, M.2 describes a physical form factor, not a guarantee that every M.2 drive is interchangeable. A SATA replacement also will not fit every system. For an external drive, check that your computer has a compatible host port and that the drive’s capacity meets your needs.

For everyday computer use
Use an SSD for the operating system, applications, and files you work with regularly when responsiveness is a priority. If you need additional room for files you access less often, add an HDD only if your computer supports one.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
For large media or game libraries
An HDD can provide economical bulk capacity when load times and frequent access are less important than space. If particular games or projects need quicker access, keep those active items on an SSD and move less-used files to the HDD.

Choose an external SSD when low weight and better shock resistance are important. For a large external archive where capacity per budget matters more, an HDD may suit the job, provided you protect it from physical knocks and maintain a second copy of important data.

Why backups matter with either drive
No drive type is fail-proof. Backblaze’s April 2024 reliability explainer examined SSD and HDD boot drives doing the same job in the same types of storage servers. In that particular cohort, the SSD annualized failure rate was 1% or less through the first four years, and the failure curves separated after about four years. Those observations are not a universal head-to-head test of consumer drives, and they do not establish how a particular model will fare in your workload.
Keep a separate backup of important files regardless of whether your working drive is an SSD or HDD. A second copy helps protect against drive failure and other loss; an external drive used as the only copy is not a complete backup strategy.
