How to Choose Between GitHub, GitLab, and Codeberg for Open Source

There is no universal best Git host for open source. Compare contributor workflow, CI allowances, storage, operating responsibility, and project values before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the host that fits your project’s contributor workflow, CI workload, storage needs, governance preferences, and willingness to operate infrastructure—not a supposed universal winner. GitHub is a practical fit when your project already uses its collaboration and Actions workflow; GitLab is worth considering when integrated source control and CI or deployment choice matter; Codeberg is relevant when its community and free-software orientation fit your project. Compare the specific hosted plans and policies your team would use before moving.

Start with the project’s constraints

For an open-source project, the platform decision affects more than where Git repositories live. It can also determine how contributors report issues and propose changes, where automation runs, how releases and other files are stored, and who operates the service. The evidence available does not establish a comparable ranking for contributor reach, reliability, privacy outcomes, or migration success, so base the choice on your own audience and requirements.

  • Contributor workflow: Consider how the project currently handles issues, reviews, permissions, and contributions, and whether its contributors already know the platform. Comparative contribution-friction data for all three services is not established.
  • Automation: Check the included hosted-runner allowance, whether your existing workflows fit, and whether you can or want to provide your own runners.
  • Storage: Account separately for Git history, LFS, packages, releases, and attachments; one total-storage figure may not cover every artifact type.
  • Governance and operations: Decide whether the provider’s stated mission matters to the project and whether you want a hosted service or responsibility for operating the forge yourself.
  • Project website: Check whether the host’s static-site features meet your documentation and domain needs.

Compare the hosted options and their published allowances

The figures below are plan or policy details, not measures of service quality. GitHub and GitLab plan details were accessed in October 2026; pricing and allowances can change. Codeberg’s storage figures come from a dated May 2025 announcement.

Platform and scope Published collaboration, automation, or storage details What to verify for your project
GitHub Free, personal account Unlimited collaborators on unlimited public repositories with a full feature set; unlimited private repositories with a limited feature set, according to GitHub’s plan documentation. Confirm that the private-repository feature set meets your needs and review current terms for any other plan or account type.
GitHub Free, organization Unlimited public repositories and collaborators, limited private-repository features, and 2,000 Actions minutes per month. Standard GitHub-hosted runner use in public repositories is free; private-repository allowances depend on plan. GitHub’s documentation also says overages may be billed. Estimate private-repository automation separately from public-repository runner use, and check the live GitHub pricing page for current plan details.
GitLab.com Free The GitLab pricing page lists $0 per user per month, source control and CI/CD, 400 compute minutes per month, and 10 GiB adjustable storage. It lists five users per private top-level group; its FAQ says this cap applies to Free GitLab.com top-level groups with private visibility, not public groups, Free Self-Managed, or specified community programs. User-owned runners do not consume shared-runner compute minutes. Check whether the group is private and whether the shared compute allowance suits your pipeline; confirm current storage and community-program terms on the pricing page.
Codeberg hosted service In an announcement published on 2025-05-14, Codeberg e.V. stated a 750 MiB Git repository limit, an additional 1.5 GiB across LFS, Packages, Releases, and Attachments, and a 100 MiB limit for non-promoted personal and private content. See the storage announcement. Treat these as dated policy figures, not guaranteed current limits. Check Codeberg’s current resource guidance and request process before moving a large repository.

When GitHub is the better fit

GitHub is a straightforward candidate when the project’s collaborators already work there or when its public-repository collaboration and Actions workflow match your needs. The Free plan distinctions matter: personal accounts and organizations have different published descriptions, and the 2,000 monthly Actions minutes figure applies to GitHub Free organizations, not every GitHub account. Public repositories have free standard GitHub-hosted runner use, while private-repository allowances depend on the plan.

GitHub also lists Pages and offers Enterprise Cloud and self-hosted Enterprise Server as separate choices. Check eligibility and current details for the account and repository you intend to use rather than assuming every feature applies to Free. The live pricing page is the place to confirm changeable plan information.

When GitLab is the better fit

GitLab may suit a project that wants source control and CI/CD together or needs to choose between a hosted service and operating its own instance. Keep the deployments distinct: GitLab.com is hosted by GitLab; Self-Managed is installed, configured, and maintained by the customer; GitLab Dedicated is managed single-tenant SaaS. The pricing page describes the Self-Managed option as an instance managed by you, with control of your data and infrastructure.

That control comes with operational work. A self-managed operator is responsible for installation, upgrades, backups, security, availability, and incident response; the evidence does not quantify the staffing or infrastructure cost for a particular project. For GitLab.com Free, pay special attention to the private top-level group user cap and the shared compute allowance rather than treating the plan’s limits as applying identically to every GitLab deployment.

When Codeberg is the better fit

Codeberg’s own overview describes it as a non-profit community and a non-commercial, privacy-friendly alternative to commercial services. Its FAQ says Codeberg uses Forgejo and names Woodpecker CI, Weblate, and Codeberg Pages among its free-software stack; it also points operators interested in running their own forge toward self-hosting Forgejo. These are Codeberg’s descriptions of its mission and technology, not independent evidence of comparative privacy, uptime, or contributor reach. See the Codeberg FAQ.

For a project website, Codeberg Pages documents publishing from a public repository’s pages branch and using custom domains. That can meet some documentation-site needs, but it does not establish feature parity with another static host. Check the dated storage limits in the table against the actual size and artifact types of your repository before migrating.

Decide whether to stay hosted or self-host

Self-hosting changes who carries the operational burden; it does not make that burden disappear. GitLab provides a Self-Managed deployment, GitHub offers Enterprise Server, and Codeberg documents self-hosting Forgejo. These are not equivalent products or service arrangements, so compare the exact deployment you would run rather than treating hosted and self-managed versions as interchangeable.

Use a project-specific checklist before migrating

Do not assume that repository transfer alone moves the project’s working history and services. Inventory the items that matter, then verify how the destination handles each one before announcing a move.

  1. Repositories and access: Record repository visibility, collaborators, teams or groups, permissions, and any forks or mirrors that need to remain useful.
  2. Issues and reviews: Inventory issues and pull or merge requests, including their discussion, labels, assignees, and review history. Confirm what can be transferred and what would need another preservation method.
  3. Automation: List workflows, secrets, schedules, runners, and required permissions. Check destination compatibility and compute limits before relying on a pipeline.
  4. Releases and artifacts: Include release records, packages, LFS objects, attachments, and other files; compare their combined sizes and types with destination limits.
  5. Project entry points: Plan what happens to existing links, redirects, mirrors, documentation sites, and custom domains, and tell contributors where to file issues and propose changes after the move.

None of the inspected plan and service descriptions establishes comparative migration effort or guarantees that every item transfers with feature parity. Test the project’s required workflow and preserve a backup before switching the canonical project location.
