Choose artificial tears by matching the label and format to how often you use them, whether you tolerate preservatives, and when you need relief. These over-the-counter lubricants can temporarily ease dry-eye symptoms, but no single brand or ingredient is best for everyone—and persistent or worsening symptoms need professional advice.
How to compare artificial tears
Start with the product’s current Drug Facts panel and container instructions. Compare these features rather than relying on a universal “best” label:

- Preservatives: Consider how frequently you use drops and whether preservatives irritate your eyes.
- Consistency: Liquids are often more convenient during the day; gels and ointments may last longer but can temporarily blur vision.
- Container: Single-dose vials and multidose bottles differ in portability, handling, cost, and packaging waste. Check the specific product: not every multidose bottle is preservative-free, and packaging alone does not establish preservative status.
- Active ingredients and stated purpose: Read the ingredients and the symptoms the label says the product temporarily relieves. The listed ingredients vary across products; the available guidance does not establish one as universally superior.
When to consider preservative-free drops
Preservatives can make a bottle practical to use, particularly for occasional use. If you need drops frequently over a prolonged period, or know you are sensitive or allergic to a preservative, ask an eye-care professional whether a preservative-free product is appropriate.
Guidance does not set one universal frequency cutoff. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s public buying guide advises considering preservative-free drops when using artificial tears more than six times a day or with a preservative allergy. Its Preferred Practice Pattern summary gives more than four times daily as an example of frequent chronic use for which nonpreserved substitutes are generally recommended. These figures reflect different guidance contexts, not a single hard threshold for everyone.

Liquid drops, gels, and ointments
Thicker products tend to remain on the eye longer, but they can blur vision after application. AAO dry-eye specialist Christopher E. Starr, MD, explains: “The thicker the lubricant is the longer it tends to last on the ocular surface.”
- Liquid drops: Often the more convenient format when you want to return to daytime tasks without the extra blur associated with thicker products.
- Gel drops: A thicker option that may suit times when longer-lasting lubrication is more important than immediate visual clarity.
- Ointments: Their thickness can make temporary blur especially inconvenient during waking activities, so people often use them at bedtime. Follow the product’s instructions.
What the ingredient label can—and cannot—tell you
Artificial tears are not all chemically identical. One U.S. DailyMed label, updated July 7, 2026, lists dextran 70 0.1%, glycerin 0.2%, and hypromellose 0.3% as lubricants. That is one formulation example, not a recommendation or proof that those ingredients outperform other lubricants. Read the current label for the exact product you are considering.

Some drops contain oils, while others are thinner or described as hypotonic or hypo-osmolar. AAO discusses oil-containing drops as an option when evaporative dry eye is relevant, and thinner or hypotonic options when aqueous deficiency is relevant. Dry-eye symptoms can have mixed causes; as AAO specialist Christopher E. Starr, MD, puts it, “There’s not really a ‘wrong’ choice since many cases of dry eye disease are mixed or have hybrid causes.” Use these categories as topics to discuss with an eye-care professional, not as a way to diagnose yourself from a label.

Use drops safely
Eye drops must be sterile because they are used in the eye. The FDA states: “Any drug used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection.” To reduce contamination risk:
Rank #3
- LASTING RELIEF: Original strength lubricating formula soothes mild symptoms of eye dryness
- PRESERVATIVE-FREE: Made with zero preservatives to relieve mild symptoms of dry eyes including burning, irritation, and discomfort
- FAST ACTING: Instantly moisturizes and lubricates
- RELIABLE PROTECTION: Active ingredients provide lasting lubrication for dry eyes
- GENTLE: Safe to use as often as needed. Great for dry, sensitive eyes
- Wash your hands before handling the product.
- Keep the bottle or vial tip from touching your eye, hands, clothing, or any other surface.
- Replace the cap after use and follow the container’s directions.
- Check the FDA’s eye-drop safety page for current alerts. It includes historical events, so do not assume every listed event is a current recall.
AAO also cautions against experimenting with “red eye relief” drops containing vasoconstrictors such as tetrahydrozoline or naphazoline to address dry-eye symptoms: they may worsen symptoms or redness over time. This caution concerns redness-relief use; it is not a blanket statement about every use of these ingredients.

Seek professional advice for eye pain, vision changes, discharge, significant redness, or symptoms that persist or worsen. Contact an eye-care professional if symptoms affect daily activities or are not relieved by over-the-counter lubricants. Do not keep trying different products in place of evaluation when these signs are present.

AAO’s Preferred Practice Pattern summary reports that a systematic literature review found artificial tears safe and effective for dry eye, while also noting inconsistencies in study designs and reporting of trial results; most products may have comparable efficacy. That evidence supports choosing for fit and tolerability, not treating a brand ranking as a guarantee of relief.
