Choose your CPU and motherboard platform first, then buy the RAM generation that the exact motherboard supports. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable: a DDR4 module will not fit a DDR5 slot, or vice versa. For a new mainstream build, DDR5 is the practical default on platforms such as AMD AM5; DDR4 is worth considering when you are deliberately building on a compatible platform and reusing memory or saving meaningfully on the complete system.
Check compatibility before comparing performance or price
The motherboard determines which memory generation you can install. Check the exact CPU and motherboard specifications, then consult the board’s memory compatibility list before buying. MSI’s PC compatibility guide explains why parts must be checked as a complete combination.

- AMD AM5: Requires DDR5, so a DDR4 kit is not an option.
- Intel LGA1700: Motherboards are available in DDR4 and DDR5 versions. Check the exact board SKU; the memory versions are not interchangeable.
Do not rely on the processor name or the physical fit of a kit alone. Confirm the motherboard’s supported generation, capacity, DIMM configuration, and speeds in its documentation. For additional generation-level context, see Kingston’s DDR generation comparison and MSI’s DDR4-versus-DDR5 guide.

What DDR4 and DDR5 change in practice
| Decision factor | DDR4 | DDR5 |
|---|---|---|
| Platform compatibility | Needs a DDR4-supporting CPU and motherboard; relevant to selected older or budget platforms and memory reuse. | Required by platforms such as AMD AM5 and common on current platforms. |
| Performance | Adequate for supported systems, but results depend on workload and kit. | Offers greater bandwidth and support on newer platforms; the benefit depends on workload and system configuration. |
| System cost | Can reduce total cost if you can reuse a kit or find a compatible CPU-and-board combination that makes the complete build cheaper. | May cost more at a given moment; memory pricing and availability can change. |
| Upgrade considerations | Limits your choices to platforms and boards that support DDR4. | Fits current DDR5 platforms, but does not guarantee compatibility with future CPUs or motherboards. |
DDR5’s higher bandwidth is not a promise of an equal improvement in every application. The result depends on the CPU, memory speed and timings, configuration, and workload. A gaming comparison is not automatically a guide to other tasks—or to every system using the same memory generation.

For example, Tom’s Hardware reported a 14% average gaming performance drop and up to 25% in some games for the DDR4 configurations in its particular mid-2026 test of Intel LGA1700 CPUs. Those figures describe that tested comparison only; they are not a universal measure of the gap between DDR4 and DDR5. See the test results and their context.

A lower-priced RAM kit does not necessarily make a cheaper PC. Compare the combined cost of the CPU, motherboard, and memory for each viable platform. DDR4 can be a sensible budget choice if you already own a compatible kit or if the DDR4 platform makes the complete system meaningfully less expensive for your needs. Tom’s Hardware discusses DDR4 build options in 2026, including the case for carrying memory over from an earlier PC.

Prices and availability are not fixed. Tom’s Hardware reported in June 2026 that DDR4 memory and motherboard production was restarting amid shortages and price increases. That makes it especially important to compare current local prices rather than assume either generation is always the cheaper choice.

Quick Recap
Choose a kit for the board you selected
- Choose the CPU and motherboard platform. Confirm the exact motherboard model and whether it supports DDR4 or DDR5.
- Set the capacity and DIMM configuration. Check the board documentation and memory compatibility list for the capacity and number of modules you intend to use.
- Compare supported speeds and timings. Select a kit suited to the board and your workload; do not assume a kit’s advertised rating is guaranteed on every CPU.
- Buy a matched kit. A kit specified together for the intended configuration is the straightforward choice for a new build. A current DDR5 kit guide can help with product selection, but verify any candidate against your board because recommendations and prices age quickly.
- Set memory profiles only as documented. Follow the motherboard and memory instructions when enabling a rated profile. An overclocked profile is not a guarantee of stability on every CPU.
Which should you choose?
- Building on AMD AM5: Choose a compatible DDR5 kit; DDR4 is not supported.
- Considering Intel LGA1700: Check the exact motherboard SKU first, then compare complete build cost and the performance needs of your workload.
- Reusing DDR4 or working to a tight budget: Keep DDR4 in consideration only if the chosen platform supports it and the CPU, motherboard, and memory together offer a worthwhile saving.
- Starting fresh with no existing RAM: Prefer a current platform and compatible DDR5 kit when the system cost fits your budget; do not pay extra for DDR5 on the assumption that every task will become proportionally faster.
