Choose by where you want an agent to work, how you want to supervise it, and which product form and access plan fit your project. Claude Code is the terminal-first option; Codex offers several client surfaces, with separate eligibility rules for cloud work; Antigravity puts agents in a workspace spanning editor, terminal, and browser. Those are workflow differences—not evidence that one produces better apps.
How do the three tools differ?
| Tool | Where you work | What to know about access and product form | What the official material does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | A CLI run from a development machine and project directory. Its reference documents interactive prompts, one-shot prompts, piping content into a prompt, resuming sessions, updating the client, and configuring MCP servers. Anthropic setup guide · CLI reference | The cited setup guide lists macOS, Linux, or Windows using WSL or Git for Windows; at least 4 GB RAM; Node.js 18+; and an internet connection. It describes authentication through Anthropic Console, eligible Claude Pro or Max plans, and enterprise deployment through providers such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. Check the guide for current requirements and options. | No cited head-to-head app-development benchmark or comparative performance result. |
| Codex | Available through the ChatGPT desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, web, and Codex Cloud, according to OpenAI’s plan-access guide. | Codex access is not the same as Codex Cloud eligibility. The guide distinguishes eligible paid or workspace plans from Free and Go, which it says do not include Codex Cloud. Usage limits depend on plan, task, and workspace settings. | No cited head-to-head app-development benchmark or common usage allowance that applies across plans. |
| Google Antigravity | The IDE places agents across editor, terminal, and browser. Google documents asynchronous and parallel work across workspaces. IDE overview | Google has also described Antigravity 2.0 as a separate desktop application for macOS, Linux, and Windows, and announced Antigravity availability for eligible Gemini Enterprise subscriptions. These are distinct product forms and access routes; see the 2.0 announcement and enterprise announcement. | The IDE overview says the IDE is not supported for enterprise customers. That does not make the IDE, desktop app, and enterprise offering interchangeable. The cited material provides no head-to-head app-development benchmark. |
These descriptions come from each publisher, not from a neutral comparative study. Google introduced Antigravity on November 20, 2025, calling it “a new agentic development platform designed to help you operate at a higher, task-oriented level.” That is Google’s positioning, not independent evidence of superior results. Which workflow fits the way you build apps?
Choose Claude Code if you prefer a terminal-first workflow
Claude Code makes sense to evaluate if you already work in a local project directory and want to interact with an agent through a CLI. Its documented options include both an ongoing interactive session and one-shot or piped prompts, so consider whether that fits how you inspect changes and provide context. Your setup must meet the published prerequisites, and you will need an authentication route that works for you or your organization.
Choose Codex if you want to select among several client surfaces
Codex is worth examining if you want to work through a desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, web interface, or cloud environment. First identify which surface you actually need: general Codex access does not automatically mean Codex Cloud is available on your plan. For a team, also check workspace settings and applicable usage limits rather than assuming every member or task has the same capacity.

Choose Antigravity if you want an agent-oriented development workspace
Antigravity’s documented IDE workflow combines editor, terminal, and browser activity, and its documentation describes agents working asynchronously and in parallel across workspaces. That may fit projects where you want to supervise work organized around tasks and artifacts rather than only a terminal conversation. Confirm that you are evaluating the particular product form—IDE, desktop app, or enterprise route—that your operating system, account, and organization can use.
How should you compare access, cost, and capacity?
Compare the exact surface you intend to use, not just the product name. A plan can include one form of access while excluding cloud features, and limits may depend on the plan or workspace. Product availability and terms can also differ by region and change over time.

- Claude Code: use Anthropic’s setup guide to confirm current system requirements and authentication options. The cited documentation is an older crawl, so verify it before relying on a requirement or access route.
- Codex: OpenAI’s product page listed Plus at $20/month, Pro at $100/month, and Business at $20 per user per month for two or more seats billed annually when accessed October 7, 2026. These are a dated published snapshot, not a guarantee of current prices, regional availability, included usage, or cloud eligibility; check the Codex product page and plan-access guide for current terms.
- Antigravity: Google maintains a pricing page, but no numeric price or quota is established here. Check the live page for your account, region, and plan rather than assuming a price or allowance.
Do not compare headline subscription prices without checking the specific features, usage limits, and cloud access included in each plan. The available official materials do not supply a common quota or cost-per-app-development-task measure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you make the decision for your project?
- Pick one representative task. Use a modest change from your own app—for example, adding a small feature or fixing a bug—rather than a toy prompt that avoids your repository’s conventions.
- Set the same boundaries. Give each tool equivalent project context and a clear definition of done. Decide in advance which files it may change, what tests or checks it should run, and whether it must explain its changes.
- Use the product form you would actually adopt. Test Claude Code in the terminal if that is your likely workflow; select the Codex surface you intend to use and confirm its plan access; for Antigravity, test the relevant IDE, desktop, or enterprise route rather than treating them as the same product.
- Review the result yourself. Compare whether the changes fit your codebase, whether you can understand and verify them, and how much supervision the workflow required. This is a practical evaluation method, not a published benchmark or a test performed for this article.
- Check operating and organizational constraints before committing. Confirm system support, sign-in, workspace policy, cloud eligibility, and current plan terms with the relevant vendor documentation.
The best fit is the tool whose working surface and supervision model match your actual development process, with access and cost you have verified for the account you will use. Official descriptions do not justify a universal ranking of app quality, speed, or productivity.
