Choose an Xbox Series X|S if you mainly play at home and want dedicated gaming hardware; choose a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally if you want to install and play games portably; choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if you would rather stream supported games to a device you already own. These options overlap: a console can stream games, a handheld can install or stream them, and a handheld can remotely play games installed on your home console.
What each Xbox option does
Xbox Series X|S: local play at home, with streaming too
A Series X|S is a dedicated console for playing games locally on a home screen. It can also play from the cloud, and it can act as the source for remote play: a supported device can access games installed on the console when remote features are enabled and the console is on or in Sleep mode. That makes a console the most natural fit when home play is the priority, while still leaving room to play remotely.

Windows handheld: installed games, streaming, and remote play
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS handhelds running Windows 11 Home. Xbox describes them as supporting installed and streamed games, remote play from an Xbox console, and supported Xbox Play Anywhere games across PC, console, and handheld. For supported cross-device play, Xbox account sync can carry saves, add-ons, and achievements.

The Ally X has more listed memory and storage, a different processor, and a larger battery capacity, but it is also heavier. Those specifications alone do not establish how many frames a particular game will deliver or how long either model will last on a charge. Xbox’s handheld compatibility labels—“Handheld optimized,” “Mostly compatible,” “Unsupported,” and “Not tested”—indicate compatibility status, not measured frame rate; some games may need settings changes. See Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally specifications and current handheld compatibility labels.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: stream to a supported device
Cloud gaming runs a supported game remotely and streams it to your device, rather than installing and running it locally. Xbox lists supported browsers on phones, tablets, and PCs, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest VR headsets. Availability depends on device and region, so check Xbox’s cloud gaming page for current support.

| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly play at home on a TV or monitor | Xbox Series X|S | It is dedicated home hardware for local play and can also stream games or serve as a remote-play source. |
| Play while traveling and want games installed on the device | Windows handheld | It supports local installed play as well as streaming and remote play. Offline play depends on the specific installed game and its requirements. |
| Use a supported device you already own and prefer not to buy gaming hardware | Xbox Cloud Gaming | It streams supported games to compatible screens, but requires network access and service/game availability. |
| Want both a home library and portable access | Console plus handheld or cloud play | A handheld can remotely access games installed on a suitably configured home console; cloud streaming is another mode where supported. |
Check your internet and control setup before choosing cloud play
Xbox specifies at least 10 Mbps download speed for cloud gaming, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are service guidance figures, not a promise of smooth play: Xbox also notes that performance can be affected by the connection, location, device, and other factors. A weak or inconsistent connection can make streaming less dependable than local installed play.

- Use a supported device in a supported region, and confirm that the specific game is available for cloud play.
- Xbox specifies a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller for cloud gaming; selected games also offer touch controls.
- For browser play at xbox.com, use a supported browser such as Edge, Chrome, or Safari.
- Check the current plan and game catalog for your country. Xbox’s US page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate with displayed allowances of 5, 10, and 15 cloud-play hours per month, respectively, and libraries of 50+, 200+, and 500+ games. These are changeable, market-specific page details, not stable guarantees; the page says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass.
- Selected free-to-play games may be playable with a free Microsoft account in a supported region. Xbox also says select cloud-playable games owned or purchased outside Game Pass can be streamed. Verify the game’s eligibility and your region on the live service page.
Confirm compatibility before spending
For handheld play, check the compatibility status of the games you care about rather than assuming every Xbox game works equally well on a Windows handheld. A status label is not a performance benchmark, and a game marked compatible may still call for settings adjustments. For cloud play, confirm the title appears in the current cloud catalog and is available through your region and plan—or qualifies for an applicable free-to-play or owned-game option.
Game catalogs, subscription features, device support, and regional availability can change. Xbox’s current overview of Xbox on handhelds explains install, streaming, remote-play, and Play Anywhere modes; consult it alongside the compatibility and cloud pages before buying a device or relying on a particular title.
