An S&P 500 fund can be an ETF or a mutual fund: the index tells you what investments the fund aims to track, while the structure determines how you buy, sell, and get priced. Neither structure is automatically better. Choose by comparing the specific funds’ costs, the account you’ll use, trading needs, and tax treatment.
First, separate the index from the fund structure
The S&P 500 is an index, not an investment you can buy directly. An index fund offers indirect exposure by seeking to track an index; it may be organized as either a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF). A fund may hold every index security or use representative sampling, so two funds that refer to the same index can still differ in implementation and results. The SEC explains these distinctions in its index fund guidance.

Both structures can follow passive strategies. Compare each fund’s stated objective, benchmark, approach, expenses, and tracking results rather than assuming that the label alone determines how closely it follows the index. Expenses, trading costs, and tracking error can cause an index fund to underperform its benchmark.
How buying and selling differ
| Feature | S&P 500 ETF | S&P 500 mutual fund |
|---|---|---|
| How orders are priced | Retail investors trade shares on an exchange during market hours. The market price can be above or below the fund’s net asset value (NAV). | Purchases and sales generally receive the next calculated NAV, typically determined after the business day ends. |
| How you access it | Typically through a brokerage account. | Through a fund company or an intermediary; some shares may be held directly. |
| When it may suit your preferences | When you value the ability to trade during the session and accept market-price execution. | When end-of-day pricing and dollar-based purchases fit your routine and you do not need intraday execution. |
These are general characteristics, not guarantees about every fund or platform. The SEC’s ETF and mutual fund bulletin describes how orders are handled. Check your broker or workplace plan for the features it actually supports.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare the costs you will actually pay
An expense ratio is only one part of the cost comparison. A lower expense ratio does not by itself prove that a fund will cost less in your account. The SEC notes, “A fund with higher costs must perform better than a lower-cost fund to generate the same returns for you.” See the SEC’s fees and expenses bulletin for an explanation of fund charges.
For a mutual fund
- Use the prospectus fee table for the specific share class available to you.
- Check for sales charges, redemption fees, intermediary charges, and account fees in addition to ongoing operating expenses.
- Confirm whether your broker, retirement plan, or fund company charges transaction fees.
For an ETF
- Include the fund’s operating expenses and any brokerage commission.
- Consider the bid-ask spread—the difference between the price at which you can buy and sell—as a trading cost.
- Check whether the ETF’s market price is at a premium or discount to NAV when you trade; execution may differ from the fund’s underlying value.
For either structure, use current documents and the fee schedule for the account in which you plan to invest. Minimums, share-class access, expense ratios, and platform charges vary by fund, share class, account, and intermediary.

How account type changes the tax comparison
Taxable account
Both mutual funds and ETFs can distribute capital gains that may create taxable income for shareholders. ETFs often make fewer capital-gains distributions because many use in-kind exchanges, but ETF status does not guarantee that a fund will avoid distributions. Check the particular fund’s distribution history and tax documents instead of relying on its structure alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems401(k) or IRA
For investments held in a tax-advantaged account such as a 401(k) or IRA, the SEC says there is no ETF-versus-mutual-fund tax difference. In those accounts, focus on the funds and share classes your plan or provider offers, along with their costs and investment approach.

Which is better for you?
- Start with your account. Find out which S&P 500 funds and share classes your workplace plan, broker, or fund company makes available.
- Decide whether intraday trading matters. An ETF can be traded during the market session, but the order executes at a market price that may differ from NAV. A mutual fund generally transacts at the next calculated NAV, typically after the market closes.
- Compare all-in costs in that account. Review each prospectus fee table and applicable account schedule. Include the costs that apply to the structure: for example, ETF spreads or commissions, or mutual-fund share-class and transaction charges.
- If the account is taxable, check distributions. Look at the specific funds’ distribution history and tax documents; do not treat ETF structure as a promise of tax-free investing or fewer distributions.
- Verify that the funds are comparable. Confirm the benchmark and objective, then compare how each fund implements its strategy, its expenses, and its tracking results.
For a named-fund decision, the SEC recommends reviewing the current prospectus and latest shareholder report. Current minimums, expenses, and availability depend on the fund, share class, account, and platform, so verify them in those documents and your provider’s fee schedule rather than relying on a general ETF-versus-mutual-fund rule.
