Choose by exact GPU model, your local price, and the games and applications you actually use—not by brand alone. Compare performance at your resolution and settings, then check memory, ray tracing and upscaling, encoding support, application compatibility, power requirements, and card dimensions. Current evidence supports useful model-by-model comparisons, but not a universal AMD or NVIDIA winner.
What the current evidence says about AMD and NVIDIA
Official product pages document features and specifications; they do not establish which brand is faster in a particular game or creative application. Independent results are tied to the cards, tests, settings, software, and prices a reviewer examined.

| Area | AMD evidence | NVIDIA evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming products and positioning | AMD’s RX 9070-series gaming page lists RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 examples with 16 GB GDDR6 and presents memory, performance per dollar, and upscaling as considerations for 1440p gaming. These are manufacturer claims and specifications, not a direct comparison with an NVIDIA card. | NVIDIA’s RTX 50 comparison page identifies Blackwell architecture, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, and fifth-generation Tensor cores. Those specifications alone do not predict performance in a particular game. |
| Video encoding | AMD describes AV1 support and a re-architected encoder for RX 9000 cards. Its creator materials also document hardware-accelerated HEVC, H.264, and AV1 encode and decode. | NVIDIA lists ninth-generation NVENC and AV1 encode for RTX 50. Its Video Codec SDK documentation describes NVENC/NVDEC for video workflows, including H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encode support. |
| Independent comparison | Tom’s Guide’s July 21, 2026 review compared the RX 9070 XT with the RTX 5070 Ti. It described the Radeon as strong gaming value in its tested context while noting ray-tracing, feature-support, and creator/AI trade-offs. | The same review provides evidence about the RTX 5070 Ti only within its tested comparison. Its results should not be generalized to every NVIDIA card, game, or workload. |
How to compare GPUs for gaming
Start with the games and settings you care about
Look for independent benchmarks of the exact models you can buy, using the games you play at your target resolution and quality settings. Separate standard rendering performance from ray tracing: a card’s result in one category does not establish its result in the other. When a review uses a different resolution, game version, or settings than you do, treat it as a clue rather than a direct forecast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare the full experience, not just average frame rates
Check whether your games support each card’s upscaling and frame-generation options, and assess image quality and latency in those specific games. Feature names are not enough: availability and implementation vary by game and GPU generation. If ray tracing matters to you, use benchmarks for the titles and settings where you intend to enable it.

Judge value using today’s local prices
Compare current prices for the exact models available in your region. A reviewer’s value conclusion may depend on the cards and prices available when that review was written; manufacturer performance-per-dollar positioning is not a substitute for a current local comparison. The RX 9070 XT is one candidate to evaluate, not an automatic recommendation.
What to check for streaming and recording
- Choose the codec and output mode. Confirm what your streaming or recording software, destination service, and upload connection support. A codec on the GPU’s feature list is useful only if the rest of your setup accepts it.
- Check the exact card and software settings. Both vendors document hardware video encoding, including AV1-related capabilities. Confirm support for your GPU generation in the software you use, then verify the available encoder and settings in that application.
- Verify destination limits before settling on a mode. NVIDIA’s current GeForce streaming guide says AV1 livestreaming is supported in 4K60 on YouTube and Discord. That is NVIDIA’s published compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every account, application, or service configuration supports the mode; check current service rules and settings.
- Do not infer image quality from encoder specifications alone. The available vendor documentation establishes hardware and codec capabilities, but it does not provide neutral, same-settings testing of AMD and NVIDIA encoder quality. Look for comparisons that match your resolution, bitrate, software, and streaming workflow if output quality is a deciding factor.
How to choose for creative applications
For editing, rendering, and other GPU-heavy work, the application and task are the comparison unit. Support in one editor or render engine does not prove that another program will use the GPU in the same way—or benefit equally from either vendor’s hardware.

- WINDFORCE cooling system
- Video editing and export: Check the editor’s supported GPU features, media codecs, effects, and export path. AMD documents hardware-accelerated HEVC, H.264, and AV1 encode/decode; NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK lists NVENC/NVDEC capabilities. Confirm which parts of your workflow use the hardware rather than relying on a codec list alone.
- 3D rendering, AI, or compute-heavy work: Check the exact application or render engine’s supported backend and compare benchmarks for that workload. The available evidence does not establish a universal brand advantage for these tasks.
- Project-specific workloads: Match comparisons to your files, effects, plugins, and expected output. A GPU that performs well in a different application or task may not be the better choice for your project.
Check the card and your system before buying
GPU names cover cards with different cooling designs and physical specifications. Before purchase, check the exact board-partner model’s dimensions, case clearance, power supply requirements, connectors, and cooling needs. These specifications are not established for every individual SKU in the sources cited here, so use the manufacturer’s listing for the specific card you intend to buy.

A practical way to make the decision
- Set your main use and target. Write down your main games or applications, resolution, settings, and desired frame rate or production workflow.
- Shortlist exact models. Include cards that meet those requirements, rather than comparing AMD and NVIDIA as whole brands.
- Check workload-specific evidence. Use gaming tests for your games, or application benchmarks for your creative tasks. Keep ray-tracing results distinct from standard rendering results.
- Verify features you will actually use. Check game support for upscaling or frame generation; for streaming, check encoder, software, and destination compatibility; for creative work, check application and codec support.
- Compare current local price and system fit. Weigh the exact card’s price against its relevant performance and features, and confirm that it fits your case and power setup.
- For mixed use, rank your priorities. Give the most frequent or hardest-to-replace task the most weight. A small advantage in a secondary workload may not compensate if the GPU is a poor fit for your main application.
