Choose the laptop that runs your required work apps and is supported by your employer’s IT team. Microsoft 365 business apps are available on both Windows and Mac, but availability does not guarantee that every feature, add-in, peripheral, or company-specific workflow works the same way. Start with your actual work requirements, then compare specific laptop models—not Windows and Mac as abstract categories.
Start with the apps and workflows your job requires
Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 business apps for Windows and macOS, but its system requirements differ by platform. Its business requirements page specifies Windows 11 and the three most recent macOS versions: Microsoft 365 business system requirements.

Check the exact apps and workflows you use with your employer or IT team. In addition to core Microsoft 365 apps, ask about specialized software, Excel macros, add-ins, external devices, and any required integrations. Microsoft’s admin overview lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, and Teams for macOS, which establishes broad availability—not identical functionality in every workplace workflow: Office for Mac overview for admins.

- Confirm that the precise version and workflow are supported on the platform you are considering.
- Ask whether your organization can provide or troubleshoot the required apps and peripherals on that device.
Find out whether Windows-only software is a hard requirement
If your work depends on software that runs only on Windows, a Windows laptop is usually the more direct route. Windows 11 can also be streamed to supported M-series Macs through Windows 365, but this is an employer-managed cloud option, not proof that a Mac is interchangeable with a Windows PC. Microsoft notes limitations involving 32-bit Arm apps and says Windows 11 Pro licensing may be needed for virtual-machine use. Ask IT whether the required app is supported through Windows 365, virtualization, or another approved arrangement, and whether that arrangement meets the app’s hardware, licensing, and performance needs. If the answer is uncertain, choose a device that runs the app natively or wait for a confirmed support plan.
Make employer support and device management part of the decision
A laptop can be technically capable and still be a poor work choice if your organization cannot provision, secure, or support it. Apple’s Mac Adoption Blueprint identifies app compatibility, device management, training, and support as considerations when adopting Macs in organizations: Apple’s Mac Adoption Blueprint.
Windows 11 availability also depends on device hardware and on whether updates are managed directly or by an organization’s IT administrators, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 planning guidance. Before buying, ask which platform your employer provisions, which devices it supports, and how it handles setup, updates, security, and repairs.

Microsoft reports an over 99.7% Windows 10 compatibility rate for enterprise organizations, including line-of-business apps, in its Windows 11 planning material. The year for that program figure is not stated, and it is Microsoft App Assure data—not an independent Windows-versus-macOS comparison or a guarantee that a particular work app will function.
Check how long the Mac will receive Office updates
Microsoft supports Office for Mac on the three most recent major macOS versions. If a Mac can no longer run a supported macOS release, Office may continue to run, but it will stop receiving updates, including security updates. Once both platforms meet your work requirements, compare the models and configurations you can actually buy or receive from your employer. Consider price, memory and storage, screen, ports, weight, warranty, service options, and the organization’s refresh and repair policies. No controlled MacBook-versus-Windows laptop battery comparison is established here, so do not treat one brand’s battery figure as a head-to-head result.

For example, Microsoft’s 2025 UK product guide lists up to 18.5 hours for the Surface Laptop 6 for Business. Microsoft says this was measured under controlled conditions in February 2024 using a preproduction device with Intel Core Ultra 7 165H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, and preproduction Windows 11 software. That vendor test is specific to that configuration and method; it is not a real-world runtime promise or a direct comparison with a MacBook: Microsoft’s 2025 UK Surface Laptop 6 for Business product guide.
Use this decision rule
- Choose a Windows laptop if a required work app or workflow needs Windows and your employer supports the laptop you plan to use.
- Choose a MacBook if your required apps and workflows are supported on macOS and your employer can manage and support a Mac.
- Consider a Mac with Windows 365 only after IT confirms that the required Windows apps, licensing, and cloud setup work for your role.
- If both platforms qualify, compare the exact configurations, service terms, and employer support—not generic claims about either platform.
Microsoft Support’s guidance is that “Windows 11 runs best on a PC designed for Windows.” That is Microsoft’s platform guidance, not an independent test result; see its Windows 11 options for M-series Macs.
