Choose a rugged phone if drops, dust, rain, vibration, temperature swings, glove use or charging interruptions are regular parts of your work or recreation. Choose a regular smartphone if those hazards are occasional and its camera, display, size, software ecosystem or carrier support better fits your needs. If drops are the main concern, a case made for your exact phone model may be a middle ground—but it does not give the whole phone the same tested environmental profile as a rugged model.
The deciding factor is not the label. Match the exact phone’s documented protections and limitations to the hazards it will actually face, and weigh them against its everyday usability and the cost of downtime.

Start with the hazards and the cost of a broken phone
List the conditions the phone will face, how often they occur, and what happens if the device fails. Repeated exposure and expensive work interruptions make rugged features more valuable; occasional risk in ordinary daily use usually makes a regular phone the better starting point.
- Consider a rugged phone if you routinely work around tools, construction dust, rain, vibration or outdoor temperature changes; handle the phone with gloves; or cannot easily stop to charge it. The case for ruggedness is stronger when a broken phone would disrupt a shift or other work.
- Consider a regular phone if severe exposure is rare and you care more about a particular camera, display, operating system, ecosystem, size or weight. Mainstream phones can have meaningful ingress protection, though that alone does not establish how they handle drops or other hazards.
- Consider a model-specific case if drops are an occasional concern rather than part of a demanding environment. Check fit, port and button access, bulk, and the case maker’s test claims. A case does not change the phone’s official ingress rating or establish that the assembled phone was tested to MIL-STD-810H.
Before choosing a rugged model, check that its exact regional version works with your carrier, required apps and business software, and that its camera and other everyday features meet your needs.

Read protection claims as specific test conditions
IP ratings: water and dust, not drop resistance
IP68 is not a universal promise of a particular water depth. Apple lists iPhone 17 as IP68 under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes (Apple iPhone 17 technical specifications). Samsung specifies up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for up to 30 minutes for both the Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy XCover7 Pro. Those are manufacturers’ stated test conditions, not instructions to expose a phone to water.
The XCover7 Pro also carries an IP65 listing. Samsung Australia describes that water-resistance test as spray at 12.5 litres per minute for at least three minutes; its IP68 listing uses freshwater submersion. Sand, salt water, pool chemicals, hot water, pressure washing and charging while wet are not equivalent to those test conditions. Follow the exact model’s manual and cautions rather than inferring protection from a rating alone.

Dust and water ratings say nothing by themselves about a phone’s drop resistance. Check the specific model’s stated rating and limitations, and do not assume that two phones with the same IP code have identical test conditions or real-world protection.
MIL-STD-810H: inspect which tests were performed
MIL-STD-810H refers to defined test methods and conditions, not a guarantee that a device will survive every accident. Samsung says its tests may address conditions such as altitude, humidity, immersion, salt fog, dust, vibration and drops; it also notes that specifications vary by device and actual use can differ from tested conditions (Samsung Australia’s XCover7 Pro specifications).

When a manufacturer makes a durability claim, look for the test details: drop height, landing surface, number and orientation of drops, whether the phone was operating, and the conditions under which it was tested. Treat the claim as evidence about specified tests—not as a prediction that your particular phone cannot be damaged.

- Size and weight: A rugged phone may be bulkier or heavier. Samsung UK lists the XCover7 Pro at 240g, while Samsung lists the base Galaxy S26 at 167g (Samsung UK XCover7 Pro business specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 specifications). These are specific configurations, not category averages or a controlled comparison of every feature.
- Camera, display and performance: Decide what you need for photos, work apps and ordinary use, then compare the precise models. The XCover7 Pro UK business page lists a 6.6-inch display, 50MP and 8MP rear cameras, and a 13MP front camera. Those specifications do not by themselves establish how its camera or display compares in practice with a phone you are considering.
- Battery and charging workflow: The XCover7 Pro has a 4,350mAh typical battery, a removable battery capability, 15W charging and a POGO charging interface. Samsung says its extra batteries and POGO dock are sold separately, and only Samsung-certified extra batteries are compatible (Samsung Australia’s XCover7 Pro specifications). A spare battery can support swapping and reduce charging downtime; the capacity figure does not prove longer measured runtime than a regular phone. Samsung says battery life varies with network environment, usage patterns and other factors.
- Work-specific features: Check whether the exact SKU supports glove use, prominent physical buttons, louder communications or a suitable dock if those will help your routine. Do not assume every rugged model includes every feature.
- Carrier and business support: Verify the local model’s network bands, carrier compatibility, warranty and enterprise software or support terms. Samsung’s UK business page lists up to seven years of security releases for its UK business/Enterprise Edition offering; do not assume that commitment or configuration applies in every market.
- Total cost: Include any case, certified spare battery, dock, expected repair cost and the business cost of device downtime. Compare the complete setup, not just the phone’s initial price.
Use the examples as specifications, not a durability ranking
The XCover7 Pro illustrates what a purpose-built rugged phone can offer: Samsung documents IP65/IP68, MIL-STD-810H-related testing, Gorilla Glass Victus+, replaceable-battery capability and POGO charging. Samsung Australia also reports a manufacturer lab test of 78 drops from 1.5 metres onto steel. That is a stated test condition, not an independent head-to-head result or a guarantee of everyday survival.
Samsung Business Insights describes a separate 26-drop sequence from 1.5 metres for the XCover7 Pro (Samsung Business Insights, September 5, 2025). The two figures refer to different described test contexts; they should not be combined into one drop rating. Both are manufacturer evidence.

Regular phones can also have strong stated water resistance. The iPhone 17’s listed 6-metre test depth differs from Samsung’s 1.5-metre freshwater test basis for the cited Galaxy S26 and XCover7 Pro. These manufacturer specifications do not establish which phone is more durable overall: they do not provide a controlled comparison across drops, vibration, repairability, wear or all other conditions.
Make the decision in a few checks
- Write down your actual hazards. Include drops, dust, water, vibration, temperature, glove use and how often charging is unavailable.
- Set a failure-cost threshold. Consider whether breakage would be an inconvenience or interrupt work, create a safety issue or require an expensive replacement.
- Compare documented tests for the exact models. Check IP conditions and any stated environmental or drop tests; do not substitute a headline label for test details.
- Check everyday fit. Compare weight, dimensions, camera, display, operating system, apps and carrier compatibility against the way you use a phone.
- Price the whole solution. Add a model-specific case or, for a rugged model, any compatible spare battery or dock you actually need. Include potential repair and downtime costs.
If severe exposure is routine and continuity matters, a rugged model is the more logical shortlist. If it is rare and everyday features dominate, start with regular phones. If occasional drops are your main concern, compare an exact-model case while keeping in mind that it is not equivalent to whole-device rugged testing.
What the available comparisons cannot establish
The cited manufacturer specifications and test descriptions do not establish an independent head-to-head failure rate for rugged and regular phones, a controlled comparison of a cased regular phone against a rugged model, or comparative battery runtime. They can help you assess stated features and test conditions, but not calculate the odds that one category will survive your particular use.
