Choose a physical PS5 game if your console has a compatible disc drive and you want a disc edition; choose digital if you want to download and keep the game in your PlayStation library. Both formats use console storage, and neither guarantees that every game or mode works offline. Before buying, compare the exact game and edition in your region, check your PS5’s model code, and confirm the title’s online requirements.
Check whether your PS5 can play discs
Sony sells PS5 models with a disc drive and Digital Edition models without one by default. A disc game requires a compatible drive; digital games work on either type of console. Sony identifies its separately sold disc drive as compatible with the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups, and says an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. Check the model code on your console rather than relying only on its marketing name, and verify compatibility before buying an accessory. Sony’s PS5 product page

| Purchase and installation | Insert the disc to begin installing game data; a compatible disc drive is required. | Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide says purchasing and downloading require an internet connection and PlayStation account. |

| Play access | The disc must be usable in a compatible drive. Some titles or modes may need PlayStation services. | Purchased and downloaded games can be played offline by other users on a PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, subject to the game’s requirements. |
A disc is not a complete substitute for installation, updates, or storage. Sony says PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played. Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide and storage guidance
Choose based on how you’ll access and share the game
When a disc fits better
- You have a compatible disc drive and specifically want a physical edition.
- You prefer inserting the game disc to access it rather than downloading it from your library.
- You want to keep a physical copy as part of your collection.
Sony’s US terms say a disc game may still be playable after console suspension if it runs on the console without PlayStation services. That is conditional, not a promise that every game or mode will work offline. Check the specific title’s requirements. Sony’s US Terms of Service
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
When digital fits better
- You want a download in your PlayStation library and do not want to use a disc.
- You want other users on one designated PS5 to access your purchased and downloaded games through Sony’s supported sharing setting.
To enable it, sign in to the PS5 you want to designate, then go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and select Enable. Sony allows the setting on one PS5 at a time. With it enabled, other users on that console can play your purchased and downloaded games offline, where the game itself permits it. Compare the exact game’s price and edition
There is no universal rule that discs or downloads cost less. Prices, promotions, stock, and available editions vary by game and region. Compare the same edition from a local retailer and the PlayStation Store, and account for any differences in included content or upgrade options. No specific game or region is assumed here, so check the current offers before deciding.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Know what Sony’s licence terms say
Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe’s UK Software Usage Terms say purchasing software grants a licence to use it rather than ownership of the software. The UK terms also describe the licence as non-transferable unless applicable local law provides otherwise and restrict resale unless expressly authorised. This is a statement about Sony’s UK terms, not universal legal advice; local law and applicable game terms can differ. Sony’s UK Software Usage Terms

On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, wrote: “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony says this change will not affect games released or releasing before that date in disc format. It concerns production of new physical releases from that point; it does not mean existing disc games disappear in January 2028. Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement
