Choose a foldable if you will regularly use its larger inner screen or its smaller folded shape; otherwise, a conventional smartphone is usually the simpler-value choice. The right decision depends on the exact model, your routine, and what repair and warranty support is available where you live.
What do you want the fold to do?
“Foldable” describes two different designs. A book-style phone opens into a wider screen for activities such as reading, watching video, or using two apps side by side. A flip-style phone folds vertically so a conventional-length screen takes up less space when closed. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 series guide describes the book-style approach; Which? frames the choice as weighing the larger display or pocket-sized shape against the premium.

- Consider a book-style Fold if you can name recurring tasks that benefit from the larger display—such as viewing documents beside messages or reading long pages—and expect to do them most days.
- Consider a flip-style phone if your priority is a smaller folded footprint and you prefer to open the phone when you need its full-length screen.
- Choose a conventional phone if calls, messaging, browsing, photography, and ordinary app use already work well on one screen, or if the folding feature would be an occasional novelty.
Try a practical test before shopping: list the apps and situations in which you would open or close the phone during a typical week. If you cannot identify a recurring benefit, the extra mechanism and display may not earn their place in your purchase.
Is a foldable phone worth it?
It can be, when its form factor replaces another device or solves a problem you encounter often. A book-style model can combine phone use with some small-tablet tasks; a flip can be more pocket-friendly when folded. But compare the foldable’s street price and ownership costs with the alternative you would actually buy. If you would use both a phone and a tablet, a conventional phone plus a separate tablet may offer better value; if you would not use the tablet, that comparison is less relevant.

Which?’s UK foldable guide, updated September 10, 2026, describes launch prices in the guide’s covered market as roughly £700 to £2,000. This is a dated UK range, not a current quote for every model or country. Check local prices for the exact storage and regional version, and factor in financing, insurance, and potential repair costs rather than relying on launch pricing alone.
How do durability and protection compare?
A conventional smartphone has no folding inner display or hinge. A foldable adds those components, and the flexible main screen may be more susceptible to scratches. Which? also reports weaker results for foldables in repeated-drop laboratory testing generally. Those observations are category-level cautions, not a prediction that every foldable will fail or a substitute for comparing specific models.
Water and dust protection are model-specific. Samsung’s Canada guide describes the Galaxy Z Fold8 series as IP48-rated and says water resistance is not permanent. TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists an IP68 rating for the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. These manufacturer- or model-specific ratings should not be generalized to other foldables or treated as a guarantee against damage; check the exact model’s rating and warranty exclusions.

Do not infer long-term reliability from a single rating or from the category label. Consumer Reports’ May 2026 ratings list individual handset models, but they do not establish a universal foldable-versus-conventional failure rate or lifespan.
Will the battery last as long?
Battery endurance varies by device and use. Which? notes that powering two high-quality, bright displays can shorten battery life, particularly with heavy use. Capacity alone does not settle the question: compare independent battery tests for the exact models under reasonably similar conditions, especially if you use navigation, video, gaming, or mobile data heavily.
For context, TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists the 2025 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 4,400 mAh battery and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold with a 5,015 mAh battery. These are specifications for those models, not a category benchmark or a direct measure of how long either lasts in your routine.

What will handling and carrying feel like?
Folded dimensions do not tell the whole story. A flip may take up less pocket space, while a book-style model opens to a larger working area; either can feel different in the hand from a conventional phone. Compare the actual models’ weight, thickness, cover-screen usability, and one-handed handling. TechRadar lists the 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 at 215 g, with an 8.0-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch outer screen. Those figures describe that model only.

If possible, handle the phone in person. Try typing, taking a call, opening the inner screen, using the cover screen, and putting it in the pocket or bag you normally use. A display that looks appealing in specifications may be less useful if the folded phone feels uncomfortable or you dislike opening it for routine tasks.

Repairability is a model- and market-specific ownership question. iFixit’s 2025 assessment of the Galaxy Z Fold7 notes careful adhesive removal and the inherent complexity of foldable repairs. Its Pixel 10 assessment says Google provides repair parts and instructions. Neither finding establishes that all foldables are difficult to repair or that conventional phones are automatically easy to fix.

Before buying, check local authorized service access, parts availability, the cost and terms of screen replacement, and whether accidental damage is covered by the manufacturer warranty, insurance, or a separate protection plan. Read exclusions carefully: water exposure, inner-screen damage, and hinge damage may be treated differently from ordinary faults. Compare the terms for the exact device and country.
A practical comparison before you buy
