Choose based on the coffee you actually want to drink: a drip coffee maker brews coffee by the cup or carafe, while an espresso machine makes concentrated coffee by forcing water through coffee under pressure. Then compare the specific machines for serving size, workflow, settings, counter space, cleaning, and total cost. Neither category is universally easier, cheaper, or faster; those details depend on the models.

Which kind of coffee do you want to make?

Choose drip for brewed coffee by the cup or carafe

A drip coffee maker is designed for brewed coffee served as a cup or a batch. If that is what you reach for most mornings, start by checking the model’s carafe capacity, whether it supports single-cup brewing, and how it handles filling, programming, and serving.

Choose espresso for concentrated coffee brewed under pressure

Espresso is a concentrated beverage made by forcing water through coffee under pressure. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) distinguishes home coffee brewers from semi-automatic and automatic espresso machines in its standards overview. If you mostly want regular brewed coffee, an espresso machine may not match your everyday drink; if you specifically want espresso, a drip machine will not make it.

Compare the exact machines, not category stereotypes

What to compare Drip coffee maker Espresso machine
Serving pattern Check carafe capacity and single-cup options on the model. Check the serving workflow against the drinks your household usually makes.
Morning workflow Review the steps for filling, programming, brewing, and serving. Review the manual steps and any automation on the specific machine.
Settings and control Check which brew settings the model offers. Check what the machine lets you control, including how coffee grind is handled.
Counter space Compare the current model’s published dimensions with your available space. Compare the machine’s dimensions and allow for any additional equipment you need.
Cleaning and maintenance Read the model’s care instructions and consider the parts you will clean routinely. Read the care instructions for the machine and any other equipment in the setup.
Cost Compare the exact model’s purchase price and recurring costs. Compare the machine price and any additional equipment or recurring costs.

There is no established category-wide price, measured preparation-time, operating-cost, or footprint figure to settle these comparisons. Use current specifications, prices, and care instructions for the models you are considering rather than assuming one type is always cheaper, quicker, smaller, or easier to maintain.

What espresso means—and what the definition does not settle

An SCA article reproduces a heritage Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) definition describing espresso as a 25–35 ml beverage prepared from 7–9 grams of coffee, with water at 195–205°F (90.5–96.1°C), forced through the coffee at 9–10 atmospheres of pressure, with a 20–30 second brew time. The stated quantities double for a double espresso. The SCA frames this as a historical definition while discussing how espresso practice evolves; it should not be treated as the sole current rule for every espresso style. Read the context in the SCA article on the changing definition of espresso.

Check certification as one useful signal

The SCA maintains a list of home brewers that have passed its third-party testing against SCA requirements. The list includes examples such as the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select, OXO Brew 8-Cup, and Fellow Aiden; models and listings can change, so check the current certified home equipment list for the exact product. Certification is a screening signal, not a promise that you will prefer a machine’s taste, capacity, or workflow. The SCA lists home brewers and semi-automatic or automatic espresso machines under separate standards, as explained in its standards overview.

Decide whether you need a separate grinder

A grinder may be relevant to an espresso setup, but whether one is included—and which grinder is compatible—depends on the exact machine. Check the product specifications before buying an additional grinder, and verify that any separate grinder supports the range needed for your intended setup. The SCA discusses standards development in its standards development article, but the available information does not establish compatibility for particular machine-and-grinder pairs.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Name your usual drink. If it is brewed coffee by a cup or carafe, begin with drip brewers. If it is espresso, begin with espresso machines.
  2. Match serving size to your household. Check a drip model’s capacity and single-cup options, or confirm that an espresso machine’s workflow suits the drinks you make.
  3. Review daily effort and control. Compare the actual preparation steps and available settings; the machine category alone does not establish a universal learning curve or effort level.
  4. Measure your setup. Compare published dimensions with your counter and include any extra equipment required.
  5. Check upkeep and full cost. Read the care instructions and add the purchase and recurring costs for the complete setup.
