Choose the disc-drive PS5 if you want physical media
The disc-drive model keeps both options open: you can buy and play supported PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs or download games digitally. It is also the straightforward choice if you want to use supported Blu-ray or DVD media. Pick it if access to physical discs is important to you; the Digital Edition cannot play them without a compatible separately purchased drive.
Choose the Digital Edition if you expect to buy games digitally
The Digital Edition fits players who are comfortable purchasing and downloading games through PlayStation Store and do not need an installed disc drive. Sony also references PlayStation Plus catalog streaming on its Digital Edition page, but a subscription is not required for ordinary downloaded games. Digital-only purchasing means you cannot use physical game discs on the console as sold.

Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sometimes. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 detachable drive is compatible with specified PS5 Digital Edition slim model groups and PS5 Pro. Sony says it plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. During setup, the drive must be paired with the console using an internet connection. Check Sony’s compatibility information against the console’s model group before purchasing; do not assume an older or different Digital Edition supports it.
What Sony says about game sales from January 2028
Sony’s US buying page currently states: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.” Sony also says that discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a future policy notice, so check Sony’s page for the latest wording and details before relying on it. Sony’s US buying page

Compare the exact model and local offer before buying
Prices, bundles, and stock depend on the market and retailer, so there is no universally cheaper edition based on the available information. Compare the specific offers available to you, then confirm the model, included drive, and storage capacity in the listing. If you are considering a Digital Edition with a separate drive, verify its model-group compatibility as well.
