If the console you want already runs the games you plan to play, buying now is the practical choice. Wait if your current setup still works and you would rather compare the next generation’s confirmed consumer specifications, price and release date before committing. A developer hardware milestone is not a retail launch date, so there is no confirmed Project Helix release date to plan around.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of specific games—not just franchises or platforms—and check each one in the relevant official store or compatibility information. Confirm whether it is available now, announced for your chosen console, or available on another device you already own. Verify exclusivity rather than assuming a game is exclusive based on its marketing.

If several games you want are already available on a current console, buying now lets you play them without waiting for an unconfirmed successor. If your main reason to wait is a particular future game or feature, check whether it has actually been announced and for which hardware. Do not buy on the assumption that an unconfirmed system will support a title.
Know what is—and is not—confirmed about the next generation
Xbox: Project Helix has a developer milestone, not a retail date
In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Microsoft introduced Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console and said it plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a plan for developer hardware, not a confirmed date for consumers to buy the console. Microsoft did not announce a public release date, final specifications or retail price in that announcement. Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement describes the system as designed to play Xbox console and PC games, but its eventual consumer capabilities and terms should not be treated as settled until Microsoft confirms them.

PlayStation: do not infer a launch date from past console cycles
The available official information does not establish a next PlayStation consumer launch date. A familiar console-cycle pattern is not confirmation. If timing is the deciding factor, wait for an official announcement rather than relying on a forecast.
Nintendo Switch 2 is already a current option
Switch 2 is available as a current-generation choice, with TV, tabletop and handheld play. Its hybrid format can matter more than raw specifications if you want to play away from a TV or share a screen flexibly. Nintendo’s stated modes are described on its Switch 2 product page.

Check whether your existing games and accounts carry over
PlayStation 5
Sony’s US PS5 page says that more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 consoles. It also says Game Boost can improve frame rates in select PS4 games. These are platform-wide statements, not a guarantee about every title’s behavior; check the specific game if an upgrade, save transfer or performance improvement matters. Sony’s US PS5 page also describes PlayStation Plus as providing access to a changing library of PS5 and PS4 games. Monthly games remain playable while membership is active; catalog access is not the same as permanent ownership. Check current plans, prices and catalog in your market.

Xbox
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. That statement signals a continuity goal, but it does not identify every supported game or promise that every legacy title will work on every future device. Look up the exact game before counting it as part of an upgrade’s value. Microsoft also describes Xbox Play Anywhere for supported games and progress across screens; availability depends on game support.
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, while warning that some may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Compatible titles may receive free updates or paid upgrades, and improvements vary by game. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information and the publisher’s notes to check a particular title.

Accessory support is similarly specific. Nintendo says original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2, and the original Switch dock is not compatible. Check the compatibility listing for each accessory rather than assuming that an older peripheral will work.

Estimate the total cost, not just the console price
Prices, bundles and subscription terms vary by market and change over time, so compare current local listings rather than relying on an old price. Add up the costs that apply to your situation:
- The console model you need, including whether you want disc support.
- The games you plan to buy, including any paid upgrades for games you already own.
- Online multiplayer or a subscription, if required for the games and features you use.
- Storage expansion and any controllers or other accessories you need.
- Any existing library value you would lose if key games or accounts do not carry over.
On PlayStation, a PlayStation Plus catalog can reduce the need to buy some games individually while membership is active, but the available games rotate and access depends on the tier and current catalog. Do not count subscription access as ownership. For Switch 2, Nintendo specifies microSD Express for expandable storage; a conventional microSD card is not a substitute. Confirm current local pricing and availability for compatible cards before including one in your budget.
Use this decision rule
Buy a current console now if
- It runs games you specifically want to play now.
- Your current system cannot meet your gaming needs, and waiting has no confirmed benefit you need.
- Its existing-library compatibility and play style fit your household after checking the titles and accessories that matter.
Wait if
- Your current setup is adequate and you are comfortable postponing new games.
- You would rather compare confirmed next-generation consumer specifications, price and release timing before buying.
- Your decision depends on a future capability or game that has not been confirmed for a current console.
If you are undecided, write down the games you expect to play in the next few months, check their platform availability and compatibility, then compare the full local cost for the systems that support them. That gives you a concrete reason to buy now—or a clear reason to wait—without treating a developer announcement as a launch promise.
