Choose a bean-to-cup machine if you want more of the drink-making process automated; choose a separate grinder and espresso machine if you want to make more preparation and brewing decisions yourself. The labels alone do not tell you how much work a model handles: some machines with built-in grinders still use a portafilter and require manual steps. Compare the workflow, controls, milk setup, and cleaning routine of the exact models you are considering.
What do “bean-to-cup” and “separate grinder” mean?
A bean-to-cup or super-automatic machine can combine several tasks—grinding, heating water, tamping, brewing, and sometimes frothing milk and selecting pre-programmed drinks. The exact automation varies by model. A machine may have an integrated grinder and automate some preparation while still asking you to handle a portafilter or other steps.

With a separate grinder, you grind coffee independently of the espresso machine. This typically leaves more preparation choices in your hands, but it does not by itself guarantee better-tasting espresso. Manufacturer descriptions explain features and workflow; they do not establish that either setup always produces better coffee. Breville frames automation as convenient while acknowledging a possible quality compromise, but that is the manufacturer’s general view, not independent comparative test evidence. Choose more automation if you want fewer manual steps
Look for a model that automates the specific work you want to avoid. Check whether it grinds, doses, tamps, brews, and prepares milk automatically, or whether it still requires you to operate a portafilter, steam milk, or clean parts by hand. A preset drink menu does not necessarily mean every stage is automatic.
#1 Best Overall

- 15 grind settings (plus 43 micro-adjustments): Easily customize your coffee grind—from fine for espresso to coarse for French press and cold brew.
- One-touch start: The Conical Burr Coffee Grinder remembers your last setting. Just push to grind—no need to reset each time.
- Brew bigger: Large removable hopper holds up to 12 ounces of coffee beans.
- Always fresh: UV-blocking tint shields coffee beans in sunny kitchens.
Choose a separate grinder if you want more hands-on control
A separate setup makes the grinder a distinct part of your workflow and gives you more direct involvement in preparation. Before buying, check that the grinder offers adjustments suited to your coffee and recipe, and find out which brewing variables remain adjustable on the espresso machine. More control also means more steps to manage.
Compare the actual features, not the labels
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Workflow | Which steps are automatic? Do you need to grind, dose, tamp, handle a portafilter, steam milk, or clean components? |
| Control | Can you adjust grind size and other brewing variables? What can you change when using a preset? |
| Dial-in | Does the grinder provide adjustments useful for your beans and recipe? How many cups might it take to notice a change? |
| Milk drinks | Does the machine prepare milk automatically, or does it have a steam wand? How much hands-on work are you willing to do? |
| Space | Compare the dimensions of the specific machine and grinder. There is no universal space advantage for either configuration. |
| Cleaning | What does the manual require for the brew unit, milk system, drip tray, and descaling? |
| Total cost | Compare the machine and grinder together against the all-in-one option, including any accessories you need. Current comparable prices are not established here. |
What integrated-grinder examples show—and do not show
Integrated grinders and automation vary even among machines that might be described with similar labels. Philips identifies a 15-setting grinder on its Barista Brew models PSA3218/01, PSA3218/10, and PSA3228/01. Its guidance for those models also addresses grind, dose, tamping, and extraction. How to adjust grind and respond to extraction
Grind size affects extraction, but useful adjustments depend on the machine, coffee, and recipe. Philips’ guidance for the listed Barista Brew models treats 20–30 seconds as a correct extraction range for those machines. It associates a quick extraction and watery or sour/sharp taste with under-extraction, and a very slow or dripping extraction and bitter/burnt taste with over-extraction. These are model-specific troubleshooting guidelines, not a universal recipe or a guarantee for every coffee, basket, machine, or taste preference. Philips Barista Brew extraction guidance
- If extraction is too quick: Philips suggests grinding finer, increasing the dose, or tamping properly on the specified models.
- If extraction is very slow or only drips: Philips suggests grinding coarser or reducing the dose on those models.
For the listed Philips machines, support advises changing the grind setting while beans are grinding, moving one notch at a time, then brewing two to three cups to experience the effect. Follow the instructions for your own model; do not assume these steps apply to every grinder. Philips grinder adjustment guidance

Include cleaning and maintenance in the decision
Automatic does not mean maintenance-free. Breville describes rinsing or washing certain components, cleaning the milk system, and descaling as upkeep for super-automatic machines. The parts involved, schedule, and compatible cleaning products depend on the model. Read the selected machine’s manual for its brew-unit, milk-system, drip-tray, and descaling instructions rather than applying one brand’s interval to another machine.
