Choose antivirus by comparing recent, independent tests of Trojan and other malware protection, then weigh performance and usability alongside protection. For Windows, include Microsoft Defender Antivirus in that comparison rather than assuming a paid product is necessary. No antivirus guarantees that every Trojan will be blocked, so pair it with updates and other security practices.
What antivirus can—and cannot—do against Trojans

Use dated independent tests rather than a product’s feature list or a single generic “detection rate.” Check that the test covers your operating system and a relevant product version. AV-TEST reports protection, performance, and usability separately, with up to six points for each category. Its Windows home-user results page shows August 2026 results and lists Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) among tested products. Tests use different scopes and conditions, so compare products within the same relevant test period when possible. AV-Comparatives identifies differences that can include offline protection, performance, phishing coverage, and feature depth. Should Windows users rely on Microsoft Defender or choose another product?
Windows users can compare Defender with third-party products using the same dated protection, performance, and usability evidence. Defender appears in AV-TEST’s Windows consumer comparison, and its April 2026 Windows 11 test entry includes Trojan and other malware categories. Those facts do not establish a universal winner or show that every Windows user needs a paid replacement.

Consider another product if its current, relevant test results or specific functions better match your needs—for example, if you require a particular level of offline capability or phishing coverage. Do not treat a paid bundle or a longer feature list as evidence of better Trojan protection on its own. Use antivirus as one layer of protection
CISA and FBI guidance places antivirus alongside patch management and other defenses, rather than treating it as a complete security plan. CISA and FBI guidance

- Be cautious with unexpected files and links, including content that urges you to open or install something.
- Use antivirus alongside other basic defenses; a subscription is not a substitute for careful installation practices.
