To choose one, decide who will control those keys, how you will protect recovery access, and how much convenience you need for transactions. “Hot” and “cold” describe internet connectivity—not whether a wallet is safe or unsafe.
What a crypto wallet actually holds
A wallet does not contain coins or tokens in the way a physical wallet holds cash. It manages cryptographic keys that let you authorize activity on a blockchain. A private key authorizes transactions; a public key can be shared so others can send assets to you and activity can be verified. If you lose the private key and cannot recover it, you may permanently lose access to the assets associated with it. The SEC’s retail investor bulletin on crypto custody explains these basic custody mechanics.

Hot versus cold: choose a connectivity trade-off
Hot wallets
A hot wallet connects to the internet, commonly through a desktop, mobile, or web application. That connectivity makes it convenient for frequent transactions, but also increases exposure to online threats such as phishing, malware, and compromised accounts.
Cold wallets
A cold wallet is generally kept offline. A hardware wallet is one physical option for offline key storage. Keeping keys offline can reduce online exposure, but the device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Setup, backup handling, and the care taken when approving transactions still matter; “cold” does not mean risk-free.

Hot and cold describe connectivity, while self-custody and third-party custody describe who controls the keys. These are separate decisions: a custodian may use online storage, offline storage, or a combination, while a self-custody wallet can be used in different ways.
Self-custody or a third-party custodian?
Self-custody
With self-custody, you control the private keys. That gives you direct control over access, but you are also responsible for protecting the keys, maintaining a reliable recovery method, and authorizing transactions carefully. A lost device need not mean lost access if recovery was set up properly; a lost or exposed recovery phrase can create a different risk.

Third-party custody
With a custodial service, a provider controls access to keys on your behalf. This can reduce the burden of personally managing wallet keys, but adds reliance on the provider. A custodian can be hacked, shut down, or become insolvent. Before relying on one, understand its asset support, security and access controls, insurance terms, fees, privacy practices, use of customer assets, and what happens if it fails. The SEC recommends evaluating a custodian’s background and regulatory status as well as those operational details in its custody bulletin.

Protect your keys and recovery phrase
Keep recovery information private and offline
A recovery or seed phrase can restore wallet access. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet, so never give it to a support agent, website, or another person. Ethereum.org’s security guidance is direct: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” Do not photograph or screenshot the phrase: an image may sync to cloud storage. Store the backup securely and follow the specific wallet’s recovery instructions. Ethereum.org’s security and scam-prevention guidance covers phrase and key safety.

Check that the backup is complete
Backup needs vary by wallet. Some wallets manage multiple keys behind the scenes, so a partial backup may not restore access to all funds. Bitcoin.org advises users to understand how their particular wallet handles backups and recovery before relying on one. Read Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance.

Review transactions before signing
Before sending crypto, compare the recipient address with the one you intend to use and read the transaction details shown for approval. Ethereum transactions are irreversible once sent, according to Ethereum.org’s security guidance, so an incorrect address or unintended transaction may not be recoverable.
When using a smart contract, grant only the spending permission needed rather than unlimited permission, where the wallet or application allows you to set a limit. Read what you are approving instead of treating a signature prompt as a routine confirmation.
When multisignature may help Bitcoin users
Bitcoin.org describes multisignature as a way to require multiple independent approvals. For an individual, that can reduce reliance on a single device or location: compromising one key or one backup location may not be enough to authorize a transaction. It also adds complexity, so understand how the required approvals and recovery work before putting funds behind a multisignature setup. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance discusses the approach.
What the 2026 U.S. regulatory updates do—and do not—mean
On October 1, 2026, SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins said the Commission had proposed a crypto-specific custody framework for investment advisers and funds. The proposal addresses custody in that regulated context; it is not a general retail-wallet rule or a recommendation about which wallet an individual should use. Atkins’s statement on the proposal describes its scope.
The SEC’s interpretation concerning federal securities laws for certain crypto assets and transactions was issued March 17, 2026, and became effective March 23, 2026. It is securities-law context, not a decision about which wallet a retail reader should choose. The SEC’s interpretation sets out that context.
