For a recent mistake or corruption in the same AWS Region, use Amazon RDS point-in-time recovery (PITR) when the needed time falls within the automated backup retention window. Use a manual snapshot to restore a deliberately preserved state. For a Region-wide outage, automated backups must have been replicated to another supported Region before the incident. Both PITR and snapshot restores create a new DB instance—not an in-place rollback—so validate its configuration and data before routing production traffic to it.
Which Amazon RDS recovery method fits the incident?
| Recovery method | Restore point and retention | Geographic scope | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automated backups with PITR | Select a time within the configured retention period, up to the latest restorable time. AWS’s Getting Started Guide lists a configurable retention range of 1–35 days; the accessed page does not state a publication year. AWS RDS backup and restore guide | Same-Region restore; cross-Region use requires advance replication. | Recovering to a recent point before accidental deletion or corruption. |
| Manual DB snapshot | A user-selected restore point that remains until explicitly deleted. AWS RDS backup and restore guide | Restore in its Region; snapshots can also be copied to another Region. | Returning to a deliberately captured state, such as before a significant change, or duplicating an environment. |
| Cross-Region automated backup replication | Restore from replicated snapshots and transaction logs using a latest or custom restore time. Recovery point can lag because replication is asynchronous. Enable replication; restore from replicated backups | Destination Region, only for supported source/destination Region and engine combinations. | Preparing for a regional disaster when recovery must be possible outside the source Region. |
AWS describes same-Region PITR as restoring to any second within the backup retention period. That describes the selectable restore time, not a promise of zero data loss in a regional failover. For cross-Region recovery, AWS Prescriptive Guidance characterizes replication as asynchronous and estimates an underlying RPO of 5–30 minutes. It says recovery can take up to a few hours while a snapshot is restored and archived transaction logs are applied. These are AWS planning figures, not a workload-specific guarantee; the accessed guidance does not state a publication year. AWS Prescriptive Guidance on RDS PITR snapshot replication

How to restore to a point in time in the same Region
Use PITR when automated backups cover the time you need. The restore creates a separate DB instance and leaves the source instance in place. AWS’s guide gives a retention range of 1–35 days; your configured window and the instance’s available restore times determine what you can select.

- In the Amazon RDS console, open Automated backups, select the DB instance, then choose Actions and Restore to point in time.
- Review the earliest and latest restorable times. Choose the latest restorable time or specify a custom time that falls within the retention window and is earlier than
LatestRestorableTime. The API reference describes the time constraints and restore parameters. RestoreDBInstanceToPointInTime API reference - Choose the new instance’s identifier and review its database, compute, storage, networking, and security settings before starting the restore.
- Wait for the new DB instance to become available, then validate it before changing application connections.
The console is not the only option: AWS also supports PITR through the AWS CLI and RDS API. The restore workflow and settings are described in Restoring a DB instance to a specified time.

When a manual snapshot is the better restore point
A manual snapshot is useful when you need a known, intentionally captured database state rather than a timestamp chosen within the automated backup window. Create one before a significant change or to preserve an environment for later duplication. It persists until you delete it, independently of the automated backup retention setting. Restoring the snapshot also creates a new DB instance; the source is not overwritten. AWS RDS backup and restore guide
How to prepare for a regional recovery
Cross-Region recovery is a design choice to make before an outage, not a setting to improvise after losing access to the source Region. Enable automated backup replication to the destination Region, and confirm that the specific Region pair and PostgreSQL engine are supported in AWS’s current matrix. In the destination Region, restore from the replicated backup using the available latest or custom restore time. Replication copies snapshots and transaction logs asynchronously, so the destination may not contain changes made immediately before the incident. AWS’s 5–30 minute RPO estimate and recovery duration of up to a few hours are planning guidance; actual timings depend on the workload and restore process. Rehearse the workflow in the target Region to measure your own recovery time and establish the required cutover steps. Restoring from replicated backups; AWS Prescriptive Guidance

A restored instance may not inherit every operational setting exactly as expected. The RDS API reference says most original configuration is retained, but defaults can include a system-selected Availability Zone, the default security group, default DB subnet group, and default DB parameter group. Check the restored instance against your intended production configuration rather than assuming the source settings carried over. RestoreDBInstanceToPointInTime API reference

Allocated storage cannot be reduced; where an increase is allowed, AWS’s restore guide requires at least a 10% increase. RDS point-in-time restore guidance

What happens to backups when the source is deleted?
If you delete the source DB instance, deliberately decide whether to retain its automated backups. AWS notes that automated backups can otherwise be deleted along with the instance. Manual snapshots are independent and remain until explicitly deleted. Automated backups require the DB instance to be in the available state; they are not taken while it is in another state, such as storage_full. Amazon RDS introduction to backups
