After purchase, follow the figure’s own assembly instructions, keep it in a ventilated place away from direct sunlight, strong fluorescent light, heat and dampness, and clean it gently without improvised chemicals.
Use the process below to screen a listing, plan the display, assemble the figure without stressing parts, and reduce the main long-term risks: dust, UV and heat exposure, humidity, dye transfer from clothing, falls and questionable seller support.

What “safe collecting” means
Safety has three parts. First, the purchase must be reasonably traceable: you should know who made the figure, what is included and who will handle a defect or return. Second, the figure must be physically secure. A pose that overhangs a shelf, a missing support stand or a base that barely fits can turn a display into a fall hazard. Third, the environment must not accelerate deterioration. Good Smile Company’s care guidance calls for ventilation and avoidance of direct sunlight and strong fluorescent light; it also warns that hot, humid conditions can speed damage.

- Material safety: careful handling of painted ABS or PVC parts, fabric clothing and small accessories.
- Preservation: gentle dust removal and a location that is ventilated, cool relative to heat sources, and not damp.
There is no universal figure scale, cabinet specification or authenticity test that guarantees every purchase. Treat the individual product page and manual as the controlling information.

How to evaluate a figure listing before you buy
Confirm the character, pose and version
Read the title and product description closely. Check the character name, series, pose, edition or reissue wording, and whether the photographs show the exact version being sold. A similar-looking image can represent a different release with different accessories, dimensions or paintwork.
Read the material and specification fields
Look for the stated materials, approximate height, base or stand information, articulation, included face plates and effect parts. Good Smile Company’s official figma You Watanabe listing, for example, describes a painted, articulated ABS/PVC figure approximately 135 mm tall and supplied with a stand. That is an example of useful listing detail, not a universal size or a recommendation of that product. Availability and specifications can vary by region and release.
Check what supports the pose
A stand may be essential rather than decorative. Determine whether it is included, whether a support arm or peg is required, and whether the product uses a special base. If a dramatic pose depends on an accessory shown in a photograph, verify that the accessory is in the included-parts list rather than assuming the photograph is the package contents.

Identify the actual seller and support path
Prefer the manufacturer’s store or an authorized retailer when one is available. On a marketplace, find the name of the seller that actually fulfills the order, not just the marketplace’s name. Before paying, locate the stated return window, defect process and contact method. Keep the order confirmation and photographs of the unopened package in case a part is missing or damaged.

Use evidence, not “proof” shortcuts, to judge authenticity
No single sticker, country-of-manufacture label, photograph or unusually low price proves that a figure is genuine. Compare the listing with the maker’s official product information, including spelling, accessory count, materials and dimensions, and be cautious when the seller will not identify the source. The available guidance does not establish a universal counterfeit checklist, so describe uncertainty honestly rather than treating one visual detail as conclusive.

Measure your display space, including the base
Do not order from the character height alone. The usable space is the empty area between the shelf surface, the shelf above and the back or side walls. The figure’s base, effect parts, hand-held accessories and pose overhang all count.
- Measure usable height. Measure from the shelf surface to the lowest obstruction above it. Leave room to place the figure without scraping a hair spike, weapon or effect part against the shelf above.
- Measure usable depth. Measure from the front edge to the back wall or cabinet door. Include the base and any part of the pose that projects forward.
- Measure usable width. Check neighboring figures, cabinet dividers and door frames. A wide base or outstretched arm can need more lateral space than the product’s height suggests.
- Compare all listed dimensions. Use the manufacturer’s height and any stated base dimensions; if a base measurement is not stated, ask the seller or allow generous clearance rather than guessing.
- Check the surface. The shelf should be stable for the particular item. Do not place a tall, top-heavy figure where vibration, a frequently opened door or an unstable stack can knock it over.
As an illustration, a 200 mm-deep shelf and a 160 mm base leave only 40 mm for front clearance. That may be insufficient once a sword, cape or support arm projects beyond the base. The arithmetic is simple; the dimensions must come from the individual product and your shelf.
Choose a location that slows deterioration
Light
Place the display out of direct sunlight. Good Smile Company also advises avoiding strong fluorescent light. Prolonged ultraviolet exposure can affect relevant paintwork; a 2025 Good Smile notice linked hot, humid storage and prolonged UV exposure to defects in selected products. That notice concerns those products and does not establish a universal failure rate for all figures.

Ventilation and moisture
Use a well-ventilated location rather than a damp corner or an airtight hiding place. Hot and humid conditions can accelerate deterioration, so move the collection if condensation, persistent dampness or heat buildup is present. Do not treat a dark room, a sealed box or a closed cabinet as an automatic preservation solution.
Heat and nearby equipment
Keep figures away from radiators, heaters, cooking appliances, hot lamps and equipment that exhausts warm air. Heat can soften or stress materials and can increase the risk of dye transfer from dark fabric clothing. Leave space around the display so air can circulate.
Boxed storage
If a figure is stored in its package, Good Smile’s general checklist recommends taking boxed figures out periodically. Inspect the figure and packaging for signs of heat or moisture, and return it only after both are dry and clean. A box limits dust, but it does not make an unsuitable hot or humid location safe.

An enclosed case is primarily a dust-management choice. Collector and retailer guidance recommends enclosed shelving to reduce dust compared with open shelving. The cited material does not establish that every case filters ultraviolet light, controls humidity or is appropriate for every figure, so verify those claims for the specific case.

Case-selection checklist
- Measure the internal, not merely external, height, depth and width.
- Include the figure’s base, support arm, effects and pose overhang.
- Check how the case ventilates and whether heat can accumulate inside.
- Look for documented UV-performance claims if light protection is a goal; marketing language alone is not a specification.
- Confirm that shelves and the supporting furniture are stable for the item you intend to display.
- Make sure doors can open without striking a weapon, hair part or stand.
Assemble and handle the figure without damage
Read the included manual before fitting any part. Product-specific instructions override generic tips because one figure may use a flexible peg while another uses a rigid joint or a delicate translucent effect.
- Prepare a clear work surface. Remove clutter, jewelry and liquids. Keep small parts in a tray so they cannot roll away.
- Inventory the contents. Compare the parts with the manual before applying pressure. Photographing the layout can help if you later need support for a missing component.
- Identify the sturdy handling points. Hold the torso or designated solid areas rather than thin hair tips, fingers, weapon shafts, antennae or translucent effects.
- Follow the assembly sequence. Fit pegs, hands, faces and supports in the order shown. If a part does not align, stop and recheck orientation.
- Use the supplied stand when instructed. A stand or support arm may carry the pose’s weight. Do not substitute a random peg or display the figure unsupported merely because it appears to balance.
- Apply only the intended force. Good Smile’s instructions warn that force in an unintended direction can damage a part. Never twist a joint past its designed travel or force a peg that is visibly misaligned.
- Stabilize before moving. Once assembled, check that the base is flat and the support is fully seated. Move the complete base with two hands rather than lifting the figure by an accessory.
Small parts and sharp points can present a hazard to children and pets. Keep loose accessories out of reach and choose a display position that cannot be easily pulled down.
Prevent clothing dye transfer
Dark fabric clothing can transfer dye to PVC when it remains in prolonged contact, especially with friction, heat or humidity. This is a material-contact issue, not a sign that every dark outfit will immediately stain a figure.
- Inspect dark fabric edges where they touch the figure, particularly under arms, at collars and around belts.
- For long-term display, consider separating the clothing from the figure if the product design allows it.
- Good Smile suggests using vinyl between clothing and the figure as a barrier. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific item and avoid adding material that changes the pose or puts pressure on a joint.
- Check contact areas periodically, especially after a warm or humid period. Early detection is easier than trying to remove an established stain.
Dust and clean with the least aggressive method
Start with the manufacturer’s instructions. For routine dust, a collector guide suggests a soft brush or blower for sculpted details and warns against harsh cleaners. No single brush, blower or cleaning liquid has been established as safe for every painted finish.

- Remove loose accessories if the manual permits. This exposes hidden surfaces and prevents a brush from catching a sword, ribbon or effect part.
- Support the figure. Hold the base or a sturdy torso section while dusting; do not brace a fragile limb.
- Work from top to bottom. Use light strokes or gentle air to move dust away from joints and recesses rather than grinding it into the paint.
- Inspect before using anything damp. If the maker does not specify a cleaner, do not improvise with household chemicals, solvents, disinfectants or abrasive cloths.
- Reassemble only when dry and secure. Make sure no moisture remains in a joint, base socket or fabric fold.
Avoid compressed-air blasts that could spin a joint, launch a small part or drive dust deeper into a mechanism. If a stain, tacky surface or paint change appears, stop cleaning and contact the manufacturer or seller instead of escalating to a stronger chemical.
Simple inspection routine for an established display
Use a repeatable check whenever you dust, move or rearrange the collection. It is more useful than relying on a calendar interval that cannot account for your room or the product.
- Environment: confirm that sunlight has not shifted onto the shelf and that nearby heaters, lamps or vents are not warming the figure.
- Stability: verify that the base is flat, the support arm is seated and no neighboring item is pressing against the pose.
- Contact points: inspect dark fabric against PVC for early color transfer.
- Surface: look for dust buildup, tackiness, discoloration or a change in paint finish.
- Accessories: make sure small parts and effects remain fully inserted and have not begun to sag.
- Case condition: if enclosed, check that doors, shelves and ventilation remain unobstructed.

- Eliminate poor listings. Remove options with unclear maker, contents, dimensions or seller support.
- Eliminate poor fits. Compare the full base and pose with your measured shelf height, depth and width.
- Choose the safer support system. Prefer the option whose supplied stand and assembly instructions you can follow without forcing parts.
- Choose the better environment. Select the location or case that provides ventilation and avoids direct sunlight, strong fluorescent light, heat and dampness.
- Plan maintenance. Decide how you will reach the figure for inspection and gentle dusting before committing to a crowded shelf or deep case.
This sequence keeps appearance and price from hiding practical problems. A beautifully sculpted figure that cannot fit its shelf, needs an absent stand or must sit beside a heater is not a safe display choice.
