How to Choose and Connect External Storage for a Mac Studio

Match an external drive to your Mac Studio’s exact ports, your storage needs, and—if you plan to boot from it—Apple’s startup-disk format guidance.

Choose external storage for a Mac Studio by matching its capacity and intended workload to a drive’s interface, then connect it to a compatible port on your exact Mac Studio model. For an external macOS startup disk, Apple recommends APFS—especially for an SSD—and Apple silicon Macs also require a working built-in startup disk.

How to choose external storage for a Mac Studio

Start with what you need the drive to do. A portable SSD is a practical category to consider for compact storage or active project files; a traditional hard drive may suit bulk storage where portability and frequent file access matter less. These are general use-case distinctions, not promises about a particular product’s speed.

Match the drive to the job

  • Portable expansion: Consider capacity, size, and whether the drive and its cable are convenient to carry.
  • Active project files: Compare the drive’s interface and credible product-specific performance information for the kinds of files and workload you use.
  • Bulk storage: Decide how much capacity you need and whether a desk-based drive is acceptable.
  • macOS startup disk: Check Apple’s format and startup requirements before choosing and preparing the drive.

For any option—including an external SSD for Mac—check capacity, interface, included cable, compatibility with your Mac Studio, workload, and whether you need portability. A connection standard’s stated limit is not a measured speed for a particular drive: the drive, enclosure, cable, workload, and file sizes affect actual transfer behavior. Apple’s support pages explain interfaces and setup, but do not compare or benchmark named drives.

Which port should I use for an external SSD?

Use a USB or Thunderbolt port compatible with both the drive and your exact Mac Studio. Port layouts differ by model and configuration, so identify your Mac Studio before assuming what its front ports support. Apple’s current Mac Studio guide describes four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports and two USB-A ports; on one current configuration the front USB-C ports are USB 3, while on another they are Thunderbolt 5. Earlier Mac Studio models have different port configurations. Check Apple’s Mac Studio port and accessory guide for the guidance that applies to your model.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model | External Solid State Drive, IP65 Water & Dust Resistant, Up to 3M Drop Protection, 256-bit AES Encryption, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

As an example of why model-specific checking matters, Apple’s specifications for the 2023 Mac Studio list Thunderbolt 4 up to 40 Gb/s, USB 4 up to 40 Gb/s, USB 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10 Gb/s, and USB-A up to 5 Gb/s. Those are interface specifications for that generation, not measured speeds for an external drive and not universal specifications for every Mac Studio.

How to connect the drive

  1. Check the Mac Studio and drive connectors. Confirm the exact Mac Studio model and the storage device’s connection requirements.
  2. Use a compatible cable. Start with the cable supplied with the drive if its connector fits a compatible Mac port. If it does not, use a suitable USB-C or Thunderbolt cable or adapter for both devices. Apple notes that adapters and cables may be sold separately; check the accessory documentation or manufacturer for compatibility in Apple’s Mac Studio adapters and cables guide.
  3. Connect the drive and access it in macOS. Apple’s guide to connecting external storage to a Mac covers external drives, USB drives, thumb drives, and memory cards.

Choose a format if the drive will start up macOS

Apple’s format advice here is for an external device used to hold macOS and start up the Mac; it is not a universal format requirement for every data drive. Apple recommends APFS, especially for an SSD. It also says Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS Plus, is acceptable for traditional hard drives and is required for macOS Sierra 10.12 or earlier. See Apple’s external startup disk guidance for its format and setup details.

On a Mac with Apple silicon, Apple says starting up from external storage requires a working built-in startup disk. An external startup disk cannot replace an internal disk experiencing hardware failure. This condition applies when you intend to boot from the external device, not to ordinary file storage.

What the available specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Port specifications help establish whether a connection is compatible and its stated interface limit. They do not establish the sustained performance of a particular drive. Do not choose on a claimed real-world speed advantage unless credible testing covers the exact drive and a workload like yours; the Apple guidance cited here does not rank storage products or provide external-drive benchmark results.
