There is no universal optical drive for a DIY game console. First decide whether your build reads discs through a host such as Raspberry Pi or MiSTer, or replaces the drive inside a specific original console. Then check the drive interface, power needs, software and media support—and, for an internal replacement, the exact console motherboard revision—before buying or taking anything apart.
Choose the right kind of drive for your build
These projects use two different architectures, and their drives are not interchangeable:

A standard PC drive that connects to a host is not thereby compatible as an internal replacement for a console. Check the requirements for the exact build and software before purchasing parts.
Connecting a DVD drive to Raspberry Pi
A documented Raspberry Pi build reads original discs with an internal SATA DVD drive connected over USB. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes its example drive this way: “A standard internal DVD-ROM drive is perfect: this build used a 2008 Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7203S SATA DVD-RW.” That is a historical example in one build, not a compatibility guarantee for every Pi, emulator, or disc.

Use a powered connection
The guide recommends an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter or an externally powered enclosure. A practical search phrase for the adapter route is powered SATA to USB adapter for DVD drive. Before choosing one, confirm that it supports the drive’s SATA data and power connections and includes an appropriate external power supply.
- Connect the adapter’s SATA data and power leads to the internal DVD drive.
- Connect the adapter’s USB cable to the Raspberry Pi.
- Connect the adapter’s power supply to an outlet. An externally powered enclosure is an alternative.
- Configure the operating system and emulator for the specific disc-reading workflow you intend to use, then test before closing the case.
The guide warns that bus-powered USB disc drives can be awkward on Raspberry Pi because they may draw more power than the board can readily supply. Do not assume a drive will work reliably just because it fits a USB port; use external power when the drive or host requires it.

Check emulator and disc behavior
Drive compatibility also depends on software. The Raspberry Pi guide cautions that some early-console emulators expect the disc to keep spinning, while Blu-ray drive spin behavior may not suit those emulation expectations. These are constraints described for that guide’s host-and-software path, not universal rules for every emulator. Confirm support for the exact emulator, media format, and drive behavior in your intended setup. The guide also includes a DOSBox CD-mounting workflow, but commands and configuration can depend on the software version and build; do not treat its dated Raspberry Pi 4 setup as current general-purpose setup instructions.
Using a USB optical drive with MiSTer
A user report published July 26, 2026 describes physical-disc support on MiSTer using a USB optical drive. It says to enable the feature through the Update_All script’s configuration menu under “other cores.” Because this is a user report rather than a cited official setup guide, confirm that the option and procedure apply to your MiSTer software version before relying on them.

The report also notes that a bus-powered optical drive may need a powered USB hub if it draws more power than the board supplies; a drive with its own power supply avoids that particular USB-power dependency. Verify the supported drive and media for your intended core rather than assuming every USB DVD or Blu-ray drive will work.
Replacing a drive inside an original console
An internal replacement is a console-specific repair or modification, not a generic PC-drive installation. The PlayStation 1 example covered by ArcStation shows why the exact board matters: connector type and placement vary by motherboard revision, and the SCPH case model alone may not reliably identify that revision.

Identify the board before ordering
- Use the replacement maker’s current guide to identify the motherboard by its connector placement and shield shape.
- Match the guide’s cable instructions to that board revision, including connector type and orientation.
- Check any region or compatibility settings required by the replacement; the ArcStation device uses a DIP switch for these settings.
- Confirm that the product explicitly supports the console revision you have. Do not apply a PlayStation 1 cable pinout or settings to another console.
ArcStation warns that the PlayStation 1’s internal power supply can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions, and do not touch the power-supply board or exposed metal. If you are not equipped to work safely inside the console, do not proceed with disassembly.

Even a manufacturer-supplied detachable drive can be model-specific. Sony says its detachable disc drive works only with PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model group consoles and requires an internet connection to pair during setup. That example illustrates the importance of checking exact model requirements; it does not mean a generic PC optical drive will work with a DIY console.

Verify the configuration before final assembly
Test the complete path while the build is still accessible. For a host-connected drive, connect it with the intended adapter, enclosure, or powered hub; start the target software; and confirm that the specific media you plan to use is recognized and behaves as expected. For an internal replacement, follow the manufacturer’s revision-matched installation and configuration guide, then confirm operation before reinstalling shields or closing the case. If the drive is not detected, recheck the power source, data connection, connector orientation, and software or revision match before changing other parts.
