There is no single display technology that is best for every bioimaging task. Choose and assess a display according to what the image is used for: exploratory research visualization, vision-science stimulation, or clinical interpretation. LCD and OLED flat panels are both covered by medical-display quality-assurance guidance, but the technology label alone does not establish that a screen is suitable. The relevant questions are whether its measured behavior fits the task, the viewing conditions are controlled, and appropriate quality assurance is in place.
Why the display matters in a bioimaging workflow
A digital image is not experienced only as data: the screen converts it into visible luminance and color under particular settings and viewing conditions. In clinical workflows, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) describes medical display workstations as part of PACS and as the endpoint used for diagnostic image interpretation. That makes display performance a component of the image-review chain, not simply a matter of personal preference. AAPM Report OR03

Bioimaging use cases are not interchangeable. A display used to inspect research images informally may not need to meet the same acceptance criteria as a setup that delivers precisely controlled visual stimuli or a workstation used for clinical decisions. Define the task and its governing protocol before choosing a display or deciding what measurements count as acceptable.

What display technologies are relevant?
LCD and OLED are established flat-panel categories addressed in AAPM’s medical display QA guidance. A broader 2020 technology review compares LCD and OLED with mini-LED and micro-LED configurations across dimensions such as power consumption, ambient contrast, response time, dynamic range, flexibility, and transparency. These categories describe different display approaches, not a universal ranking for bioimaging. AAPM Report OR03; AAPM Report No. 270; Huang et al., 2020
#1 Best Overall
For a specific workflow, compare the display’s behavior with the image content and viewing conditions. A screen’s headline technology, resolution, or color claim does not by itself establish grayscale performance, uniformity, or suitability for a diagnostic task.
Which properties should be assessed?
Assessment should follow the task. For image review, useful measurement categories include luminance, grayscale behavior, spatial uniformity, and color when color encodes information. Experiments involving time-varying stimuli may also depend on pixel response and waveform. A vision-science evaluation of four specific systems considered these kinds of properties and found that monitor settings and firmware can affect results. Abu Haila et al., 2024

- Luminance behavior and uniformity: Determine how output changes with image stimulus size and settings, and whether luminance is consistent across the panel.
- Grayscale response: Check gamma or linearity and channel additivity when accurate tonal reproduction matters.
- Color: When color carries meaning, assess gamut, channel behavior or spectra, and color accuracy rather than relying on a broad marketing label.
- Temporal behavior: For moving or rapidly changing stimuli, consider pixel response time and waveform.
- Use conditions: Account for resolution, viewing distance, ambient illumination, ergonomics, device stability, settings, and firmware.
- QA and acceptance: Match the quality-assurance process and pass criteria to whether the display supports exploratory visualization, a controlled experiment, or clinical diagnosis.
These are assessment dimensions, not universal pass thresholds. Use the protocol or professional guidance applicable to the task; the available sources do not establish one bioimaging-wide threshold.

Can a consumer OLED monitor be used for scientific image viewing?
Sometimes, for a defined vision-science experiment—but the evidence does not establish that consumer OLED monitors are suitable for every scientific imaging use or for diagnostic interpretation. In a 2024 study, Tarek Abu Haila, Korbinian Kunst, Tran Quoc Khanh, and Thomas S. A. Wallis evaluated four systems: an ASUS OLED ROG Swift PG27AQDM, a Samsung OLED TV, an LG UltraGear 27GN950-B LED gaming monitor, and a VPixx PROPixx projector. Their results concern those tested systems and configurations. Abu Haila et al., 2024
Rank #3
In that study, the tested ASUS OLED and LG LCD each covered approximately 94% of DCI-P3 color space. The tested ASUS OLED gaming monitor also had a sharp square waveform at 240 Hz. These are measurements of those particular configurations, not specifications for OLED or LCD displays as a class. The authors emphasize that suitability depends on experimental requirements and on monitor settings and firmware behavior. Abu Haila et al., 2024
For a research setup, decide which measurements the experiment depends on, characterize the actual display under its intended settings, and document configuration changes. Do not infer clinical suitability from a result about vision-science experiments.

How should medical display quality assurance be approached?
AAPM Report No. 270 provides recommendations for assessing flat-panel display quality in medicine, including LCD and OLED displays used in image acquisition and review. AAPM says the report may inform the design of QA programs and purchasing decisions. Its stated purpose is “to provide recommendations for the assessment of display quality for flat-panel displays used in medicine.” It is a professional resource for shaping assessment, not a blanket certification of every display or a substitute for task-specific acceptance criteria. For digital pathology, display characteristics also matter because the screen serves as the pathologist’s digital “microscope.” A 2020 review discusses calibration and ambient-light issues, but its surfaced discussion does not establish how broadly strict luminance calibration applies to pathology. That uncertainty should not be read as evidence that calibration is unnecessary. The cited material does not settle current jurisdiction-specific acceptance criteria for diagnostic pathology displays; consult the applicable institutional and jurisdictional guidance. A practical selection and assessment sequence
- Define the use: State whether the display is for exploratory visualization, vision-science stimulation, clinical review, or digital pathology. Identify the image features that must be preserved.
- Set the applicable criteria: Select the task-specific protocol or professional guidance before comparing screens. Do not invent a universal threshold where none is established.
- Compare relevant properties: Assess only the display characteristics that affect the task, such as luminance and uniformity, grayscale or color behavior, temporal response, resolution, and performance under the intended ambient light.
- Measure the actual configuration: Treat settings and firmware as part of the display system. A measurement on one configuration does not automatically apply to another unit or setup.
- Plan ongoing QA: For medical use, use appropriate professional guidance to shape the QA program and purchasing decision, and follow the requirements governing the clinical setting.
A display measurement instrument may be useful when a workflow requires characterization, but the sources cited here do not identify a particular model or establish its compatibility with a given protocol. Confirm that any instrument supports the display type and measurements your procedure requires.
