Choose an exchange account if you prefer provider-managed access and trading; choose a self-custody software wallet for convenient control of your own XRPL keys; choose a hardware wallet if you want to sign with keys kept on a dedicated device. Each shifts responsibility rather than removing risk: with an exchange you trust the provider, while with self-custody you must protect your keys and device.
First, separate custody from wallet type
“Exchange,” “software,” and “hardware” do not describe exactly the same thing. Exchange describes a service and usually a custody arrangement: the provider controls the keys. Software and hardware describe how a wallet is accessed or how keys are used. A software interface can still be custodial, and hardware is commonly used for self-custody; check the product’s actual custody model and signing flow rather than relying on its label. XRP Ledger wallet guidance and its secure-signing guidance explain these distinctions.

Compare the three choices
| Choice | Who controls the keys? | What it makes easier | Main responsibility or trade-off | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The provider | Trading and managed account access; password reset may be available | You depend on the provider’s custody, account security, and policies. Your displayed balance may be an entry in the provider’s books rather than a separate XRPL account you control. | People who want an integrated service and are comfortable trusting the provider |
| Self-custody software wallet | You | Quick day-to-day access and wallet features | You must secure the keys and the device. The XRPL has no recovery process for lost self-custody keys. | Regular use when direct control and convenience matter |
| Self-custody hardware wallet | You; signing takes place on the device | Keys can remain on a dedicated device that is disconnected when idle | Requires setup and physical-device care; XRPL transaction support varies by device and software. | People who prioritize key isolation for longer-term holding or signing |
This compares wallet arrangements, not specific providers or devices, and is not a guarantee about any product. Provider fees and policies vary; they are separate from XRP Ledger account reserves.

Choose an exchange account for managed access
An exchange may suit you if you value trading within one service and prefer provider-supported password recovery. The trade-off is that the provider controls the keys and account access. A balance shown in the app may represent the provider’s internal accounting rather than XRP held in an individual on-ledger account for you. You are relying on the provider’s security, policies, and continued access to your account.

Choose software self-custody for direct, frequent use
A self-custody software wallet puts the secret keys under your control and gives you direct access to transactions the ledger permits. That control comes with responsibility: keep the keys safe, secure the device, and maintain a backup. If you lose the keys, the XRPL cannot restore them for you. Software safety also depends on the wallet’s update and dependency practices; XRPL warns that supply-chain attacks can affect wallet software.
Choose hardware self-custody for dedicated signing
A hardware wallet keeps the secret key on a dedicated signing device, which can be disconnected when it is not being used. This can reduce exposure to a compromised computer or phone, but it does not remove the need to protect the device, recovery information, and signing process. Before buying or relying on one, verify that the exact model, current firmware, and companion wallet support the XRP Ledger actions you intend to perform. Some devices do not support every transaction type.

Check the XRPL reserve before funding a self-custody account
At the time of the official documentation’s access on October 4, 2026, the XRPL mainnet reserve was listed as 1 XRP per account, plus 0.2 XRP for each owner-reserve ledger item. Reserved XRP cannot be sent while it is reserved. These protocol values can change through validator fee voting, and other networks may have different values. Check the current XRPL reserve documentation and the account’s ledger objects before funding or transacting.
If an exchange custodian provides an account and you do not have an individual ledger account, the individual account reserve requirement does not apply to you in the same way. That does not mean an exchange is fee-free: trading, withdrawal, and other provider fees or rules are separate, and should be checked with the provider.

Use these safety checks with either custody model
- Never share a secret key or seed. XRPL warns that anyone who obtains a key can control the account. Do not give it to a website, support agent, or signing service.
- Store keys securely. Keep them private and encrypted; do not store them in plaintext or send them over the internet.
- Verify signing compatibility. Confirm support for the exact device, firmware, wallet app, and XRPL actions you plan to use.
- Assess the software and provider. For a custodial account, examine the provider’s account-security practices and policies. For self-custody software, consider its update and dependency practices.
- Consider separating uses. XRPL signing guidance identifies separate addresses with different security configurations as an option based on the value and purpose of holdings.
- Understand what your displayed balance represents. An exchange balance may be a claim recorded by the provider rather than direct control of a separate on-ledger account.
A practical decision
- Decide who should control the keys. If you want provider-managed access, consider an exchange account. If you want direct control, choose self-custody.
- For self-custody, choose the form factor. Software favors convenient routine access; hardware favors signing with keys kept on a dedicated device.
- Check your intended XRPL activity. Confirm the wallet and, for hardware, the exact device support the transaction types you need.
- Before funding, check the current reserve. Confirm the live reserve rules for the network and account rather than relying on a remembered figure.
- Make a recovery plan. Know how you will keep credentials or self-custody backups safe before moving XRP into the account.
