Choose an Xbox by deciding first whether you need a disc drive, then matching the console’s resolution and storage to your display and game library. Pick a disc-drive Xbox Series X for physical games or UHD Blu-ray; an all-digital Series X for Series X features without discs; or an Xbox Series S if you want an all-digital console designed for 1440p and its storage tier fits your needs. Xbox lists current configurations and specifications on its console comparison page.
Which Xbox consoles are available?
Xbox’s current lineup includes Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB SSDs and Series S configurations with 512GB or 1TB SSDs. Storage figures are the capacities listed by Xbox; the usable space available for games may differ. Check the exact model before purchase: Series X is available both with and without a disc drive, while Series S is all-digital.

Choose a disc-drive Series X if you use physical media
A disc-drive Series X is the option for playing physical Xbox game discs or watching UHD Blu-ray discs. Xbox lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on disc-equipped Series X configurations. Confirm that the specific console listing says it has a disc drive: the 1TB Robot White Series X is all-digital.

Choose an all-digital Series X if you want Series X without an optical drive
The 1TB Robot White Series X keeps the Series X positioning, including True 4K gaming resolution, but does not include a disc drive. It suits a buyer who gets games digitally and has no need for disc playback.
Choose Series S if all-digital gaming and 1440p suit you
Series S is designed for disc-free gaming at 1440p and can upscale to 4K. It does not play physical discs, so games and other content that require a disc drive are not an option. Choose between the 512GB and 1TB version according to how many games you expect to keep installed.

How should your TV or monitor affect the choice?
Match the console’s resolution and refresh-rate capabilities to the screen you actually use. Xbox lists Series X as supporting True 4K gaming resolution; Series S is designed for 1440p with upscaling to 4K. Upscaling is not the same as native 4K rendering.
Both consoles advertise up to 120 FPS, but that is a maximum conditional on supported game content and a compatible display—not a frame rate guaranteed in every game. Check your TV or monitor’s specifications and settings for its resolution and supported refresh rates. If you cannot use 4K or high refresh rates on your screen, those capabilities may not affect your experience as much as disc support or storage.

How much storage do you need, and how can you add it?
Series S comes with a 512GB or 1TB internal SSD; Series X comes with a 1TB or 2TB internal SSD. A larger capacity can help if you want to keep more games installed, but your needs depend on your library and how often you are willing to remove and reinstall games.
For more space, Xbox offers a separately sold Storage Expansion Card that connects to the console’s dedicated expansion port and matches the custom SSD performance. Xbox also lists support for USB 3.1 external hard drives. The drive type matters: Xbox does not establish that every game can be played directly from any external USB drive, so check the game and storage guidance before buying an external drive for that purpose. See Xbox’s console information for storage details.
