Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose SSD capacity by adding up what you expect to keep installed or stored at the same time: your operating system and apps, games, and local files. Then allow room for updates and future additions. There is no single ideal size: Microsoft’s consumer guide suggests 256 GB to 1 TB+ for large photos, movies, or games, and 512 GB to 2 TB+ when games share the drive with other files. Those are broad vendor recommendations, not guarantees for every workload.
Start with what will be on the drive at the same time
Make an inventory of the data and software you expect to keep on the SSD concurrently. Include the operating system, applications, games you want installed, and personal files stored locally. Add the storage requirements shown by the game publishers or stores for the specific titles you play; game sizes vary, so a generic average is a poor basis for choosing.

- Operating system and applications: Account for the system and the programs you use. If the SSD will also hold Windows and your apps, do not size it as though all capacity were available for games and documents.
- Games: List the titles you want installed together and use their current published storage requirements. For example, Steam lists Hogwarts Legacy as requiring 85 GB of available space and says an SSD is preferred, while an HDD is supported. That figure applies to this game, not to games generally. Steam’s Hogwarts Legacy support listing.
- Files kept locally: Estimate the space used by photos, videos, downloads, and other files. If you use OneDrive or another cloud service, count only the files you plan to keep downloaded on the device; cloud storage can reduce local capacity needs, but does not make every file available offline.
- Room for change: Leave space for updates, new apps, and files you may add later. The amount you need depends on your update path and installed options; there is no universal reserve percentage established by the cited guidance.
Microsoft’s consumer PC buying guide recommends 256 GB to 1 TB+ for people saving many large photos, movies, or games, and 512 GB to 2 TB+ when games are kept alongside other files. Treat these ranges as orientation, then compare them with your inventory.
Why Windows’ minimum is not a practical capacity target
Microsoft lists “Storage: 64 GB or greater available disk space” as the minimum storage requirement for Windows 11. That is an eligibility floor for installing or upgrading the operating system, not a recommended total-drive size for a computer that also needs applications, games, and personal files. Microsoft notes that requirements can grow over time. See Windows 11 requirements.

Updates also need free space beyond the operating system’s baseline. Microsoft’s examples for Windows 11 update scenarios range from 5.5 GB+ to 20 GB or more, depending on the update path and optional content. These are scenario examples, not a fixed amount that every PC must reserve. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates explains the variation.
Turn your inventory into a capacity choice
Once you have a realistic list, compare the total with capacities you can buy and use. For a drive that stores only Windows and a modest set of apps, the calculation differs from one that also holds a large game library, video files, and downloads. If you want several large games installed at once, sum their current requirements rather than assuming a typical game size.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
- Mostly system, apps, and cloud-backed files: Your local media footprint may be smaller, but account for files you need offline and the apps you use.
- Games plus other files on one drive: Microsoft’s 512 GB to 2 TB+ range is a useful starting reference; your game list and local media determine where you fall within it.
- Large local photo or video collection: Compare the actual collection size and expected growth with Microsoft’s 256 GB to 1 TB+ guidance for large photos, movies, or games.
Capacity labels describe storage size, not whether an SSD is compatible with your computer. Before buying an internal drive, check the computer or motherboard documentation for supported drive type, physical size, interface, generation, and available slots. Crucial’s NVMe M.2 installation guide advises checking system compatibility; a newer-generation SSD can work in an older compatible system but may not reach the newer generation’s performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen an external SSD makes more sense
An external SSD can add removable storage if your computer cannot take another internal drive or if you want to move files between systems. Microsoft also describes external storage as a way to temporarily extend available space for Windows updates. Do not assume that games can be installed or run from an external drive on every computer or console; check the platform and game’s support information.

A quick decision checklist
- Count the OS and applications that will live on the SSD.
- Add the current storage requirements for the games you want installed simultaneously.
- Include personal files that stay downloaded locally, not files that are cloud-only.
- Allow for updates and likely additions without treating one reserve figure as universal.
- Check compatibility and slot availability before selecting an internal SSD.
- Compare prices among capacities that meet the workload; the cited sources do not establish a universal price-per-gigabyte breakpoint.
